Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Standard Natural History, Vol. 5: Mammals In the beginning of the third volume of tills series we have a general account of the anatomy and physiology of the branch of Vertebrata; and here, as an introduction to the class of Mammals, we need only to refer very briefly to some of the special diagnostic characters which separate this group from the other divisions of backboned animals. In this account we have intentionally omitted those features which are common to all ertebrates, and all description of physiological phenomena which, as explained in the ordinary school text-books of human physiology, will apply as well to the whole class of mammals as to man. The Mammalia, the highest class of the animal kingdom, is more distinctly marked off from all other groups than are many of the classes considered in the preceding volumes. While there frequently exists a doubt as to the proper boundaries of some of the lower groups, or their relative importance in the scale of perfection, no such hesitancy is felt regarding the limits or the grade of the mammalia. Even within the limits of the class the orders are all well defined, and in most cases their relative rank is pretty well settled. This superiority of the mammalia over all other classes of the animal kingdom does not imply that every organ is more perfect or better adapted to its purpose, or that every individual is really higher; but that when we come to regard the totality of the organization, and the setting apart of portions of the body for some specific purpose, resulting in an increased differention of organs and an increased complexity of the organism, upon which alone the relative rank of animal rests, the higher rank is at once evident. Thus the human eye, far from being the perfect organ described in some works of a teleological tendency, is less perfect than that of the eagle in many respects, and yet no one would think on this account of placing the bird of prey higher than man. Like all vertebrates, the mammals never have more than two pairs of limbs, but with the exception of some of the aquatic forms (whale, etc.), these two pairs are always present, whence the name in frequent use for the class - quadrupeds. The anterior pair of limbs are never absent in the group. Except in a few forms, to be noted below, the body is covered with hair. The mouth is usually armed with teeth. The heart is four-chambered, and the circulation is complete. The blood is warm and contains non-nucleated red corpuscles. The body cavity is divided into two portions by a transverse muscle, the diaphragm, or "midriff," the anterior portion being called the pleural, and the posterior, or abdominal portion, the peritoneal cavity. The young are born alive, and are afterward nourished by milk, secreted by milkglands (mammce), whence the name of the class. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Standard Natural History, Vol. 1 In so far as this is a process of growth, accompanied by the assumption of a defi nite form, it might be compared with the growth of a crystal of salt in brine; but, on closer examination, it turns out to be something very different. For the crystal of salt grows by taking to itself the salt contained in the brine, which is added to its exterior; whereas the plant grows by addition to its interior; and there is not a trace of the characteristic compounds of the plant's body, albumen, gluten, starch, or cellulose, or fat, in the soil, or in the water, or in the air. Yet the plant creates nothing, and therefore the matter of the proteids and amy loids and fats which it contains must be supplied to it, and simply manufactured, or combined in new fashions, in the body of the plant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Standard Natural History, Vol. 6 To-day the anthropologist calls to his assistance every possible source of informa tion; anatomy, language, history, traditions, myths, customs, habits, intellectual attain ments, all are to be weighed, criticised, and their import studied before one can arrive at a true classification Of the races of mankind, a classification which shall explain all peculiarities of geographical distribution and physical characteristics, and represent the exact relationships and inter-relationships Of each and every variety. Although much has been done in this direction within the past forty years, we are still far from our ideal, and whether such a grouping is within the power of the human mind with the materials at its disposal, we cannot at present say. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Natural History for Young People Although the number of works on Natural History might deter any new writer from venturing on so extensively handled a subject, there is at present no work of a really popular character in which accuracy of information and system atic arrangement are united with brevity and simplicity of treatment. All the best-known popular works on Natural History are liable to many obice tions, among which may be named a want of correct classification, the absence of explanations of the meanings and derivations of scientific words, the strange inaccuracy of many of the accompanying illustrations, and of the accounts of many animals. Nor do the conventional anecdotes chronicled in their pages evince that personal experience of the animal race which alone can repress romance and prevent inaccuracy. These deficiencies, it is hoped, are at all events partly sup plied in the present work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Standard Natural History, Vol. 2 Cuvier, in his great, divisions or branches of the animal kingdom, recognized a group Articulata characterized by having a bilaterally symmetrical body, composed of a series of rings or segments serially arranged. An excellent example of the arrangement of these rings can be seen in the common earth or angleworm. These rings make a hardened external skeleton, which at once forms a framework for the attachment of muscles, and also a protection for the internal organs. Typically, there is found in each segment a portion of each of the more important organs of the body. Just under the dorsal surface is found an elongated dorsal vessel, which represents the heart; the intestine lies in the median line of the body, which it usually traverses from end to end, while the nervous system, consisting of a series of enlargements, called ganglia, connected by nervous cords, extends along the floor of the body. This group of Articulata was still further divided into three classes: Worms, Crustacea, and Insects. This classification was long prevalent, and even at the present time it is found in use in a few text-books, though when naturalists came to study more thoroughly the principles upon which animals should be grouped, and especially upon applying the revelations of embryology, it was seen that the class of Worms contained the most heterogeneous elements, and that while certain members of it were possibly closely related to Crustacea and Insects, the great majority had no such affinity, and that the features uniting them were of not so much importance as many others. Hence, as we have seen in the preceding volume, the group of Articulata has been dismembered and dropped from use, and even the class of worms is far from being a natural one. According to the majority of the naturalists of the present day, the Crustacea and the Insects are together considered as forming a sub-kingdom, Arthropoda but the tendency of scientific thought at the present time is toward the discarding of this group, and toward the belief that the Crustacea and the Insects are generically no more closely related to each other than they are to the worms, and that each should be raised to the dignity of branches. The reasons for such a course are many, but for convenience, in the present work, the prevailing classification will be retained. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Natural History IN order to understand any science rightly, it needs that the student should proceed to its contemplation in an orderly manner, arranging in his mind the various portions of which it is composed, and endeavouring, as far as possible, to follow that classification which best accords with nature. The result of any infringement of this rule is always a confusion of ideas, which is sure to lead to misapprehension. So, in the study of living beings, it is necessary to adhere to some determinate order, or the mind becomes bewildered among the countless myriads of living creatures that fill earth, air, and water. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapters on the Natural History of the United States It will be observed that quite a large number of the illustra tions are reproduced from photographs Of living animals of va rions species and kinds. These were all taken by myself from the living subjects, and nearly in every instance of natural Size. Too much cannot be said in favor of the constant use of the photographic camera in zoology, and when by its means really first-rate, life-like pictures of any of our living forms are secured in natural attitudes, and with nature's surroundings, they Should surely be published, and be made to take the place of many of the highly incorrect figures of our animals, still to be found in popular works upon natural history. Taxidermists and artists will then, I am sure, appreciate this feature in my book, for if anything be useful and helpful to them in their work it is good pictures of this class, used, as they safely can be, as models. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural History: For the Use of Schools and Families There are many good books on Zoology, or Nat ural History, as it is commonly termed; but none are properly adapted to instruction in schools. Some of them are too popular in their character, and some, on the other hand, are too scientific, or, rather, contain too many of the details of science; while in all there is too much matter, so that the pupil is confused with the multitude Of things brought to View, and there fore obtains definite ideas of but few of them. I have aimed in this book to avoid these defects. My object has been to cull out from the immense mass of mate rial which Zoology presents that which every well-ih formed person ought to know, excluding all which is of interest and value only to those who intend to be thorough zoologists. It seems to have been forgotten by most writers Of text-books on the natural sciences that a book for common study should be very different from a book for reference. Their books are therefore cumbered with much that is not Of any use to the great body of pupils. The true plan for instruction in schools re quires that, while the class book should contain, clearly stated, only that which all ought to know, the teacher should have some works on the subject Of a more extended character, to which he can refer when ever occasion calls for it. If a Spirit Of inquiry be awakened in the class (as it surely will be if the text-book be of the right stamp and the teacher use it aright), questions will occasion ally be asked which will call for information that must be gathered from larger works, or perchance from the teacher's own observation. This leads me to say that no text-book is rightly constructed that does not excite this spirit of inquiry and observation on the part Of both teacher and pupil. The more it does so, the more fully is the true Object of teaching attain ed; for the communication Of knowledge is by no means Of so much importance as the imparting to the mind the power and the disposition to acquire it of itself. Especially is this true of such a study as Zoology, which presents to the pupil abundant mate rial for observation on every hand, in the garden and in the field, on the land, in the water, and in the air.
