Each phase should be treated by an expert and specialist, for in each lies a deep, urgent, practical problem which requires the wisest and most skilled handling; but, however discussed or dealt with, there is one point of view which should never be lost sight of, - namely, the point of view of humanity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essential introduction to Judaism’s notions of spirit as they relate to God is designed to inform both Jews and Christians who are studying what it means when we say that God is spirit. Exploring the Hebrew Bible, Midrash, and other rabbinic writings, Rabbi Timoner uncovers surprising insights about how God as spirit influences Jewish ideas of creation, revelation, and redemption. Written with an accessible and engaging voice, full of stories and relevant teachings, Breath of Life speaks to lay readers and scholars alike, as it pursues a new perspective on Judaism’s sacred texts. This book promises Christian readers meaningful insights on their own notions of God as Holy Spirit while giving Jewish readers a new look at their own tradition. "In easy but deceptively profound language, Rachel Timoner deftly savors the essential unknowability of God, the ubiquity of Torah and the mystery of redemption. She’s given us an immensely literate and serious, contemporary Jewish theology. Breath of Life is a spiritual tour de force.” -Rabbi Lawrence Kushner, Scholar in residence at Congregation Emanu-El of San Francisco, and author of many books including Kabbalah: A Love Story "Any reader keen to cultivate a robust spirituality should read this little book. Jews and Christians may discover here something to talk about—scriptures we share and a quality of God we have in common.” -John R. (Jack) Levison, author of Filled with the Spirit; Professor of New Testament, Seattle Pacific University

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Judaism as Creed and Life Thus much in reply to the possible charge that I have given a mere anthology, - that I have provided a collection of elegant extracts at the cost of ignoring the less attrac tive teachings. I have certainly made many quotations, especially in the section on Ethics. But I have done so intentionally. My aim has been to give some idea of the nobility of thought which characterises the Jewish doctrine of post-biblical times. The passages I have cited are but specimens of the vast moral and spiritual wealth to be found in the Talmudic and medieval literatures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Thoughts on Life's Battle: From Judaism to Christianity I trust every reader of these pages will accept them in a Spirit of loving kindness. They are addressed especially to Christians by a Christian who desires to see a better feeling established between them and the race from which he springs. They are not published as a literary effort, but for the pur pose of glorifying God and advancing the spiritual kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Christ Jesus; by awakening the Christian world to a sense of 1ts duty to the Jewish race, and in the further hope of bringing to the' knowledge of the sin stricken and sorrow-laden the peace and joy to be found by accepting the burden-bearer, our Lord and Saviour. The thoughts are a faithful record of my spiritual life as Jew and Christian. I have come forward in the greatest of all causes, viz., in the hope of being a peace-maker between those who are wor shiping God under the old and those who are worshiping him under the new dispensation. Some may think my method is ill-advised, but I have written with all boldness from a consciousness of right-wishing. I ask the prayers and sympathy of every right-minded worshiper of God, Jew or Christian, for the success of my effort, and in committing these pages to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, I say: Heavenly Father, Thy will not mine be done. Yours fraternally. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zionism and the Jewish Religion I In Rabbinic phraseology. The good of all nations share in the world to come. 5 Exod. Xix. 5.call the modern way of looking at religious ideas approximates to the highest conceptions of Judaism, as stated for example by Maimonides. Maimonides above all Jewish thinkers regards God as absolute; he goes so far, when he is in his highest philosophic mood as to refuse to postulate any posi tive attributes whatsoever in regard to the Godhead, and he finally defines God in terms of negative attributes only. If we adopt this as the ultimate Jewish standpoint, we must conclude that when any relationship between God and man. Is spoken of, the process of change implied in such relationship can be referred to man only and not to God. A revelation from God to man, then, put into the language of philosophical theism, means a particular state of mind on the part of man, by which he is brought into some sort of special but indefin able contact with the Absolute perfection called God. The prophets, sages, and saints of Israel, who have been in the old language the vehicles of revelation, become in the new language those in whom the soul of the Jewish people, which is one aspect of the spirit of God, has most mightily manifested itself. This conception of Israel's national destiny, of a special relationship between God and the people of Israel, which only imposes upon it higher duties because the national sense of God in Israel is truer than that of other peoples, finds its classic expression in the Book of Amos. The history of Israel is neither more nor less a part of the Divine plan than is the history of any other nation Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt and the Philistines from Caphtor and the Aramaeans from Kir (ix. 7) But Israel has known God as no other nation has known him, and it must take the consequences of that knowledge for good or for evil: Only you havei known of all the families of the earth, therefore will I visit upon you all your iniquities (iii. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystery of the Holy Trinity, in Oldest Judaism The Doctors and Fathers of the Church agree in recognizing that the august-mystery of the Blessed Trinity is not found explicitly revealed in any of the pages of the Old Testament. This mystery is the supreme manifestation of God's most intimate life. To it, the entire Christian revelation converges, and the Divine Master seems to have reserved to Him self the privilege of teaching it to men in person, when He dwelt amongst them. With good reason, however, could St. Augustine say that the Scrip tures of the Old and the New Testament, if read with a true Christian Spirit, testify that the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost are one only God in the unity of essence and substance. In fact, from the earliest dawn of man's existence, the Divine Goodness has deigned to manifest some thing of the Splendor of this supreme and adorable mystery. On casting a glance over the majestic pages of Genesis, it seems impossible to resist the impression that, beneath a form of elocution strange to us, but easy and altogether sublime, there is hid den something mysterious pertaining to the essence and personality of that God, who reveals Himself to our astonished sense in the pronouncing of a word. Which, resounding through the fathomless abysses of nothingness, calls forth into existence the heavens and the earth, and the whole creation, of which they form part.
