Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spartan Twins One lovely spring afternoon long years ago in Hellas, Lydia, wife of Melas the Spartan, sat upon a stool in the court of her house, with her wool-basket beside her, spinning. She was a tall, strong-looking young woman with golden hair and blue eyes, and as she twirled her distaff and twisted the white wool between her fingers she sang a little song to herself that sounded like the humming of bees in a garden. Fitch started to write children's fiction on a freelance basis for Young Folks. In 1906, she published her first work, The Goose Girl, a collection of children's rhymes. A year later, she followed with A Book of Joys: A Story of a New England Summer, but both works had limited popular appeal. In 1911, she published The Dutch Twins, her first major work. The book was inspired by friend Edwin Osgood Grover, who saw a picture Perkins drew of a pair of Dutch children. Grover suggested to Perkins that she design a series centered around the twins. Perkins took the advice, and the Twins series were a popular success. She published 26 books in the Twins series for the Houghton Mifflin Company.

Book excerpt: One lovely spring morning long years ago in Hellas, Lydia, wife of Melas the Spartan, sat upon a stool in the court of her house, with her wool-basket beside her, spinning. She was a tall, strong-looking young woman with golden hair and blue eyes, and as she twirled her distaff and twisted the white wool between her fingers she sang a little song to herself that sounded like the humming of bees in a garden. The little court of the house where she sat was open to the sky, and the afternoon sun came pouring over the wall which surrounded it, and made a brilliant patch of light upon the earthen floor. The little stones which were embedded in the earth to form a sort of pavement glistened in the sun and seemed to play at hide and seek with the moving shadow of Lydia's distaff as she spun. On the thatch which covered the arcade around three sides of the court pigeons crooned and preened their feathers, and from a room in the second story of the house, which opened upon a little gallery enclosing the fourth side of the court, came the clack clack of a loom.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spartan The writer gratefully appreciates the welcome which this story has received from many men and periodicals whose judgments are of the greatest value. After living so long with Leonidas and Aristodemos, endeavoring to comprehend them, it was a delightful surprise on returning to find how many people of the twentieth century are interested in the life of those far off days - the most vital in all human history - and to realize again how keen, unspoiled and modern are the scholars who specialize in things Greek. She wishes to acknowledge her debt to Mr. Martin L. D'Ooge of the University of Michigan, Mr. Charles B. Gulick of Harvard University, and Mr. Arthur G. Leacock of Phillips Exeter Academy, for encouragements and fundamental discussions. Also to Mr. Edward Delavan Perry of Columbia University, Mr. Milton W. Humphreys of the University of Virginia, Mr. Walter Miller of Tulane University, and Mr. Philip Van Ness Myers of College Hill, Ohio, for many careful criticisms of which she has availed herself in the present edition. Book excerpt: Lucy Fitch Perkins was forty-eight when she was approached by a publisher friend who, impressed by her talents as both an illustrator and writer, which he knew through correspondence, urged her to write. He was so earnest that she thought of an idea for a children's book the next morning, and she immediately set to work making sketches and preparing the idea for presentation. The publisher came to dinner at their house the next evening and she showed him the idea. His response was immediate "go ahead and write it, and I want it." That book was The Dutch Twins, the first in what became a long running and wildly popular series. Here we publish another in that series, this time the historical 'The Spartan Twins'.
