Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spanish Journal of Elizabeth, Lady Holland, 1910 The present volume of Lady Holland's journal deals with the accounts of two journeys in Spain, the first in 1802-05, the second in 1808-09. These were omitted when the two former volumes were published. The first part tells the story of the travels of the Hollands and their party at some length, and gives descriptions of many of the objects of interest which they visited. I have omitted or shortened the less important details as much as possible, and have endeavoured to confine the narrative to those incidents which seem of special interest or which bear on the character and customs of the Spaniards. Any mention also of institutions or buildings which suffered in the wars or have disappeared since that time, has been retained. The anecdotes and gossip of the Court may be of interest to the descendants of those concerned, and I have attempted very shortly to identify the various members of the families to whom reference is made. The second portion of the Journal deals almost exclusively with the incidents of the early part of the Peninsular War. Lord Holland's name was well known in Spain, and his sympathy with the cause was apparent to many outside his own circle of friends. Thus he was in a position to obtain much information which would not have been vouchsafed to the ordinary traveller. Initially married to Sir Godfrey Webster, a man 20 years her senior, she bore him five children, but by the time of their divorce in 1797 she was already pregnant again-by her lover, the Whig politician Henry Fox (3rd Baron Holland). They immediately married and Elizabeth bore seven more children to her new husband. Both Elizabeth and her husband admired Napoleon Bonaparte. Henry Fox's political status gave him a roving commission and made him and his redoubtable spouse party to much information not necessarily available to the public at the time. Fox's travels, accompanied by Elizabeth, took him to Spain at the time of the Peninsular War, and it is this period that makes Lady Holland's journal so fascinating. As an independently minded woman of high social standing Elizabeth wrote directly-and often scathingly-about the people and events she experienced or which came to her notice in consequence of her husband's position. This is interesting to modern students of the period not only as a rare female perspective, but also because much contemporary writing of the period has come from military gentlemen who might be relied upon to be guarded in their written views for the sake of good form or because discretion was-in the presence of the powerful-always the better part of valour. By contrast Elizabeth Holland's often acerbic observations and fearless judgements may occasionally verge upon gossip, but are nonetheless historically valuable. Taking travel home uncovers the souvenir culture these women developed around the texts and objects they brought back with them to realise their ambitions in the arenas of connoisseurship, friendship and science. Key characters include forty-three-year-old Hester Piozzi (Thrale), who honeymooned in Italy; thirty-one-year-old Anna Miller, who accompanied her husband on a Grand Tour; Dorothy Richardson, who undertook various tours of England from the ages of twelve to fifty-two; and the sisters Katherine and Martha Wilmot, who travelled to Russia in their late twenties. The supreme tourist of the book, the political salon hostess Lady Elizabeth Holland, travelled to many countries with her husband, including Paris, where she met Napoleon, and Spain during the Peninsular War. Using a methodology informed by literary and design theory, art history, material culture studies and tourism studies, the book examines a wide range of objects, from painted fans “of the ruins of Rome for a sequin apiece” and the Pope’s “bless’d beads”, to lava from Vesuvius and pieces of Stonehenge.
