Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Never before published in the United States, the debut novel by the wildly talented author of Booker Prize Finalist All That Man Is “That clattering noise you hear is the sound of critics and readers racing to find [David Szalay’s] earlier books, an activity worth the effort,” wrote Dwight Garner in his New York Times review of Szalay’s All That Man Is. And now American readers finally have their chance with his debut novel, London and the South-East. Paul Rainey, the hapless antihero at the center of this “compulsively readable” (Independent on Sunday) story works, miserably, in ad sales. He sells space in magazines that hardly exist, and through a fog of booze and drugs dimly perceives that he is dissatisfied with his life—professionally, sexually, recreationally, the whole nine yards. If only there were something he could do about it—and “something” seems to fall into his lap when a meeting with an old friend and fellow salesman, Eddy Jaw, leads to the offer of a new job. But when that offer turns out to be as misleading as Paul’s own sales patter, his life is transformed in ways very much more peculiar than he ever thought possible. London and the South-East, which won the Betty Trask Prize and the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize, is both a gloriously told shaggy-dog story about the compromising inanities of office life and consumer culture, and the perfect introduction to one of the best writers at work today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Domesday Book has long been used as a source of information about legal and economic matters, but its bearing upon the geography of medieval England has been comparatively neglected. The extraction of geographical information involves problems of interpretation, since it necessitates an analysis into elements and their subsequent reconstruction on a geographical basis. But when this has been done new materials for making a general picture of the relative prosperity of different areas are available, as well as data for the comparative study of varying geographic and economic factors. The whole work, The Domesday Geography of England, will be in six volumes. In them different experts are to be allotted large distinct districts under Professor Darby's editorship. He will himself draw together all the threads, and write the concluding chapters of each volume and the whole of the concluding volume. The book will be fully illustrated by many maps, all specially drawn under the general editor's supervision. The volumes will be separately available, though the first contains some general introductory matter relevant to the whole work.

This book was released on 2024-06-19 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are Tanja, Patrick and our teenage son Levi. Like most of you, the Covid pandemic has changed our lives massively. Suddenly we were not able to physically attend our jobs and school anymore, but the three of us were cooped up in our house. It is not that we don’t like our home, it is an awesome place. Being confined to the same space for so long, makes you think. In our minds, we revisited many places we had been to before. And we missed them. So, when the world finally got back to normal and some countries were cautiously opening up again, we found ourselves on a holiday on a gorgeous Greek island. Breathing sunshine and freedom. Breathing life! It was then that we jokingly said to each other: ‘We are so freaking good at traveling! We should do this forever!’ And then we laughed. As with many unconscious spoken words, there was truth in them. We went from ‘what ifs?’ to finding solutions to those questions. As you can imagine there were many things to consider. From practical things like where to leave our stuff, to schooling for our son, financial planning, how to stay connected to family and friends, to staying happy on the road. Spoiler: yes, it is going to be epic! Of course we have our moments (being hangry is one of them). Disclaimer: we are not your Instagram family with the toes-pointing-down-poses, hipster hats and food pics! However, we do take the odd picture that would not be out of place in a travel magazine. We make attractive short videos which give you an excellent feel for the place as well. TravelSome’s next volumes will cover our campervan trip around Great Britain (that is England, Wales and Scotland. For ease of use let’s just call it the UK). Then we ditch the van and are off to Southeast Asia where we will visit Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore. By plains, trains, boats, buses, bikes and tuk tuks. After that we set our eyes on Australia, New Zealand, Japan and beyond. Join us! We would love you to be part of Nomad Travel Family.

Book excerpt: Although there had been experiments with the use of a new form of transport - the ‘trackless tram’ (better known as the trolleybus) - during the first decade of the 20th century, it was in June 1911 that Bradford and Leeds became the country’s pioneering operators of trolleybuses. There had been earlier experimental users – in places like Hove and London – and as the tide turned against the tram in many towns and cities, the trolleybus became a popular alternative with London becoming, for a period, the world’s largest operator of trolleybuses. This volume – one of four that examines the history of all trolleybus operators in the British Isles – focuses on London and the other systems of south-east England
