Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Soul's Conflict and Victory Over Itself by Faith There be two sorts of people always in the visible Church; one that Satan keeps under with false peace, whose life is nothing but a diversion to present con tentments, and a running away from God and their own hearts, which they know can speak no good unto them, these speak peace to themselves, but God speaks none. Such have nothing to do with this Scripture; the way for these men to enjoy comfort, is to be soundly troubled. True peace arises from knowing the worst first, and then our freedom from it. It is a miserable peace that ariseth from ignorance of evil. The angel troubled the waters, John V., and then cured those that stepped in. It is Christ's man ner to trouble our souls first, and then to come with healing in his wings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: In his book Preachers and Preaching, Martyn Lloyd-Jones noted, "I shall never cease to be grateful to Richard Sibbes, who was balm to my soul at a period in my life when I was overworked and badly overtired, and therefore subject in an unusual manner to the onslaughts of the devil.... I found at that time that Richard Sibbes... was an unfailing remedy. His books The Bruised Reed and The Soul's Conflict quietened, soothed, comforted, encouraged, and healed me."In this book, Sibbes reflects on Psalm 42:11 - "Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God; for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God."There be two sorts of people always in the visible Church; one that Satan keeps under with false peace, whose life is nothing but a diversion to present contentments, and a running away from God and their own hearts, which they know can speak no good unto them, these speak peace to themselves, but God speaks none. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Sibbes? unique Bible commentary discusses how various passages in scripture explain the human condition; the soul, the believer's relationship to the divine, and their battles with sin. For Sibbes, the Biblical lore explained much about the difficulties of living, the challenges each person must face, and endeavouring to reconcile the qualities of the soul with the eternal nature of the heavenly divine. Through devotion to God and spurning the influence and temptations of Satan, Christian believers can attain greater happiness and fulfillment, together with a capacity to cope with the difficulties inherent to life. Traversing the Bible and psalms, Sibbes reveals lessons on soul nurturing from a variety of sources; of particular interest is the book of Ecclesiastes, which is a frank explanation of the human condition. Sibbes is keen to demonstrate strategies which observant and moral people use to fend off sin and the misfortunes of succumbing to it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In taking Sibbes slowly the reader will find some of the most sweetly written paragraphs in puritan literature and theological preaching. It is a treatise on Psalm 42:5 and 11, "Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? Hope thou in God; for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance…and my God." Sibbes is an able master exegete who, many times, is thinking far faster than he is writing. His desire to see his thoughts explode upon the page occur frequently, but in a few spots, most angelically. This is not a work to read once. It is one to study, reread and then soak in. This is not a scan or facsimile, and contains an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Declension and Revival of Religion in the Soul That the subject on which this humble volume treats is vastly solemn, and deeply searching, every true believer in Jesus must acknowledge. The existing necessity for such a work has long impressed itself upon the Author's mind. While other and abler writers are employing their pens, either in defending the out-posts of Christianity, or in arousing a slumbering church to an increased intensity of personal and combined action in the great work of Christian benevolence, he has felt that if he might but be instrumental, in ever so humble a way, of occasionally withdrawing the eye of the believer from the dazzling and almost bewildering movements around him, and fixing it upon the state of ms own personal religion, he would be rendering the Christian church a service, not the less needed and important in her present elevated and excited position. Long struggle, and that which, as we say, survives, is the particular manifestation of life which has won itself in the struggle for existence. I think it is well for us to' look at this aspect of our Christian life from time to time, because there are so many different theories about the meaning and Object of religion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Here is a no-nonsense theologian who goes for the jugular. In Forsyth's company we are aware of both the glory and the gravity of what we are doing when we go to our knees in prayer." -Eugene H. Peterson P. T. Forsyth is sometimes described as an English pre-cursor to Karl Barth. He was born in 1848 to a Scottish family of humble origins and later in life attended Aberdeen University, where he graduated with first-class honours in classical literature in 1869. In 1876 he was ordained and called to minister in Shipley, Yorkshire. In his early ministry in the Congregational Church, Forsyth fought orthodoxy and sought for the right to rethink Christian theology and pursue liberal thought. In 1878, however, Forsyth experienced a conversion from, in his own words, "being a Christian to being a believer, from a lover of love to an object of grace." A profound awareness of pastoral responsibility was awakened which radically altered the the course of his ministry. His conversion thrust him from the leadership of liberalism to a recovery of the theology of grace. Quickly, he became one of the better-known figures in British Nonconformity. In 1894, he received a call to Emmanuel College in Cambridge, where he preached his famous sermon, "Holy Father" in 1896. In 1901, he accepted a position as principal of Hackney Theological College, London where he remained until he died in 1921. Over his lifetime Forsyth published 25 books and more than 260 articles. He is often credited with recovering for his generation the reality and true dimensions of the grace of God.
