Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In taking Sibbes slowly the reader will find some of the most sweetly written paragraphs in puritan literature and theological preaching. It is a treatise on Psalm 42:5 and 11, "Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? Hope thou in God; for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance…and my God." Sibbes is an able master exegete who, many times, is thinking far faster than he is writing. His desire to see his thoughts explode upon the page occur frequently, but in a few spots, most angelically. This is not a work to read once. It is one to study, reread and then soak in. This is not a scan or facsimile, and contains an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book excerpt: In his book Preachers and Preaching, Martyn Lloyd-Jones noted, "I shall never cease to be grateful to Richard Sibbes, who was balm to my soul at a period in my life when I was overworked and badly overtired, and therefore subject in an unusual manner to the onslaughts of the devil.... I found at that time that Richard Sibbes... was an unfailing remedy. His books The Bruised Reed and The Soul's Conflict quietened, soothed, comforted, encouraged, and healed me."In this book, Sibbes reflects on Psalm 42:11 - "Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God; for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God."There be two sorts of people always in the visible Church; one that Satan keeps under with false peace, whose life is nothing but a diversion to present contentments, and a running away from God and their own hearts, which they know can speak no good unto them, these speak peace to themselves, but God speaks none. Such have nothing to do with this scripture; the way for these men to enjoy comfort, is to be soundly troubled. True peace arises from knowing the worst first, and then our freedom from it. It is a miserable peace that ariseth from ignorance of evil. The angel troubled the waters, John v., and then cured those that stepped in. It is Christ's manner to trouble our souls first, and then to come with healing in his wings. But there is another sort of people, who being drawn out of Satan's kingdom and within the covenant of grace, whom Satan labours to unsettle and disquiet: being the god of the world, he is vexed to see men in the world, walk above the world. Since he cannot hinder their estate, he will trouble their peace, and damp their spirits, and cut asunder the sinews of all their endeavours.

Download or read book The Soul's Conflict and Victory Over Itself by Faith written by Richard Sibbes and published by . This book was released on 2019-06-23 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Sibbes? unique Bible commentary discusses how various passages in scripture explain the human condition; the soul, the believer's relationship to the divine, and their battles with sin. For Sibbes, the Biblical lore explained much about the difficulties of living, the challenges each person must face, and endeavouring to reconcile the qualities of the soul with the eternal nature of the heavenly divine. Through devotion to God and spurning the influence and temptations of Satan, Christian believers can attain greater happiness and fulfillment, together with a capacity to cope with the difficulties inherent to life. Traversing the Bible and psalms, Sibbes reveals lessons on soul nurturing from a variety of sources; of particular interest is the book of Ecclesiastes, which is a frank explanation of the human condition. Sibbes is keen to demonstrate strategies which observant and moral people use to fend off sin and the misfortunes of succumbing to it.

Book Synopsis Forgiveness and Moral Understanding by : Hugo Strandberg
Download or read book Forgiveness and Moral Understanding written by Hugo Strandberg and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-21 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets out to deepen our moral understanding by thinking about forgiveness: what does it mean for our understanding of morality that there is such a thing as forgiveness? Forgiveness is a challenge to moral philosophy, for forgiveness challenges us: it calls me to understand my relations to others, and thereby myself, in a new way. Without arguing for or against forgiveness, the present study tries to describe these challenges. These challenges concern both forgiving and asking for forgiveness. The latter is especially important in this context: what does the need to be forgiven mean? In the light of such questions, central issues in the philosophy of forgiveness are critically discussed, about the reasons and conditions for forgiveness, but mostly the focus is on new questions, about the relation of forgiveness to plurality, virtue, death, the processes of moral change and development, and the possibility of feeling at home in the world.

Download or read book Grace Walk written by Steve McVey and published by Harvest House Publishers. This book was released on 2005-05-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now with a fresh cover! The nearly 200,000-selling Grace Walk has helped thousands of believers leave behind the "manic–depressive" Christian walk: either running around trying to perform to be acceptable to God—or thinking they've failed Him again and wondering if they'll ever measure up. Living the grace walk gets Christians off this religious roller coaster. Using his own journey from legalism into grace, Steve McVey illustrates the foundational, biblical truths of who believers are in Jesus Christ and how they can let Him live His life through them each day. As they experience their identity in Jesus Christ, Christians will come to know "Amazing Grace" as not just a song but as their true way of life.
Book Synopsis Aristotle and Plotinus on the Intellect by : Mark J. Nyvlt
Download or read book Aristotle and Plotinus on the Intellect written by Mark J. Nyvlt and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book emphasizes that Aristotle was aware of the philosophical attempt to subordinate divine Intellect to a prior and absolute principle. Nyvlt argues that Aristotle transforms the Platonic doctrine of Ideal Numbers into an astronomical account of the unmoved movers, which function as the multiple intelligible content of divine Intellect. Thus, within Aristotle we have in germ the Plotinian doctrine that the intelligibles are within the Intellect. While the content of divine Intellect is multiple, it does not imply that divine Intellect possesses a degree of potentiality, given that potentiality entails otherness and contraries. Rather, the very content of divine Intellect is itself; it is Thought Thinking Itself. The pure activity of divine Intellect, moreover, allows for divine Intellect to know the world, and the acquisition of this knowledge does not infect divine Intellect with potentiality. The status of the intelligible object(s) within divine Intellect is pure activity that is identical with divine Intellect itself, as T. De Koninck and H. Seidl have argued. Therefore, the intelligible objects within divine Intellect are not separate entities that determine divine Intellect, as is the case in Plotinus.-- Book Description from Website.
