Book excerpt: Cultural production, including literary work, has been a key element in the Indigenous struggle for decolonization worldwide. In Taiwan, ethnographic novels written in Chinese, such as The Soul of Jade Mountain (Yushan hun) by Bunun writer Husluman Vava (1958-2007), have been an important tool in the process of bringing the situation of Indigenous people to the attention of mainstream audiences. Before his untimely death, Vava was one of the leaders of the Indigenous cultural revival movement in Taiwan. He was among the first Indigenous authors to make use of long fiction, and he did so quite prolifically. For Vava, as is the case for many Indigenous community leaders, the mission was twofold. He wanted to recover and preserve the rich traditions of his ancestors so that younger generations, in their search for their identity and roots in the modern world, could find quality sources created within their own community. Vava also wanted to make those in the mainstream aware of the true nature and depth of Bunun culture. His many short stories and novels fashion a vivid portrait of the Bunun people, their daily life, their values, and their aspirations. Vava created accessible characters in empathetic situations in order to demonstrate the deeply human qualities of traditional Bunun life and to suggest that those qualities maintain their validity in the modern world. Vava's novel The Soul of Jade Mountain won the 2007 Taiwan Literature Award for the best novel, and this is the first English translation of an ethnographic novel by a Taiwan Indigenous writer to be published by a North American publisher, marking an important step in bringing Indigenous Taiwan to international audiences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First-hand accounts of travel provide windows into places unknown to the reader, or new ways of seeing familiar places. In Jade Mountains and Cinnabar Pools, the first book-length treatment in English of Chinese travel literature (youji), James M. Hargett identifies and examines core works in the genre, from the Six Dynasties period (220581), when its essential characteristics emerged, to its florescence in the late Ming dynasty (13681644). He traces the dynamic process through which the genre, most of which was written by scholars and officials, developed, and shows that key features include a journey toward an identifiable place; essay or diary format; description of places, phenomena, and conditions, accompanied by authorial observations, comments, and even personal feelings; inclusion of sensory details; and narration of movement through space and time. Travel literatures inclusion of a variety of writing styles and purposes has made it hard to delineate. Hargett finds, however, that classic pieces of Chinese travel literature reveal much about the author, his values, and his view of the world, which in turn tells us about the authors society, making travel literature a rich source of historical information.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Owing to Taiwan's multi-ethnic nature and palimpsestic colonial past, Taiwanese literature is naturally multilingual. Although it can be analyzed through frameworks of Japanophone literature and Chinese literature, and the more provocative Sinophone literature, only through viewing Taiwanese literature as world literature can we redress the limits of national identity and fully examine writers' transculturation practice, globally minded vision, and the politics of its circulation. Throughout the colonial era, Taiwanese writers gained inspiration from global literary trends mainly but not exclusively through the medium of Japanese and Chinese. Modernism was the mainstream literary style in 1960s Taiwan, and since the 1980s Taiwanese literature has demonstrated a unique trajectory shaped jointly by postmodernism and postcolonialism. These movements exhibit Taiwanese writers' creative adaptations of world literary thought as a response to their local and trans-national reality. During the postwar years Taiwanese literature began to be more systematically introduced to world readers through translation. Over the past few decades, Taiwanese authors and their translated works have participated in global conversations, such as those on climate change, the "post-truth" era, and ethnic and gender equality. Bringing together scholars and translators from Europe, North America, and East Asia, the volume focuses on three interrelated themes – the framing and worlding ploys of Taiwanese literature, Taiwanese writers' experience of transculturation, and politics behind translating Taiwanese literature. The volume stimulates new ways of conceptualizing Taiwanese literature, demonstrates remarkable cases of Taiwanese authors' co-option of world trends in their Taiwan-concerned writing, and explores its readership and dissemination.

Book excerpt: "Wilhelm, born in Germany, was ordained as a protestant minister in 1895 and came to Tsingtao [Qingdao] in 1899 when it had barely begun its existence as a German colony. He remained 25 years, through the Boxer Rebellion, the period of imperial reform, and the republican revolution. During World War I, when Japan besieged and later occupied Tsingtao, he remained there, in charge of Red Cross work. He came as a missionary, learned Chinese, and inquired deeply into China's spiritual traditions. His German translation of the I Ching, undertaken jointly with the Confucian scholar Lao Nai-hsuan, took a decade to complete. The following year, 1924, he returned to Germany and became Professor of Chinese Studies at the University of Frankfurt. Here he was recognized as an eminent sinologist and theologian. His translations of the I Ching and of The Secret of the Golden Flower won the admiration of psychologist Carl Jung. This volume, published a few years after his return to Germany, combines several genres, including memoir and travelogue, political and intellectual history, cultural description, and insightful essays. Among the first kind are his diaries of pilgrimage to Confucius' birthplace, to the sacred mountain T'ai-shan, and to the Buddhist caves of Yunkang, as well as his guides to the gardens of Hangchow and Soochow and to the streets of Peking. In the second category is a history of China's unhappy contact and conflict with the west, her attempts to reform, the revolution of 1911 and the subsequent years of warlords. Cultural description includes a chapter on annual festivals and the rites of birth, marriage, and death; and a description of social life, ranging from banquet etiquette to the theater and the teahouse. Essays include a detailed consideration of Protestant missions in China, how unscrupulous Chinese might use church membership as a lever for political favor from local authorities, how thoughtless Westerners would associate Christian doctrine with "superior" Western institutions, material civilization, etc., and how a native Chinese church nevertheless manages to emerge. An essay on occultism explores Chinese views of the spirit world."--Donor summary
