You lie quite still, you breathe regularly, you imagine sheep jumping over a gate, one after another, you count them quietly and slowly until you count yourself off through a fading string of phantom numbers to number Nod. Book excerpt: This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

He was its first Bishop in the English line, and to him for fifty years fell the duty of guiding its growth and presiding over its councils. When he died in 1836, he was so well known that it was not thought necessary to write a biography in detail, and Dr. Wilson's Memoir is the only attempt that has been made to set forth his individual career. Bishop Perry has rendered invaluable service in gathering up and putting into print the docu mentary ecclesiastical history of the period; but, so far as I know, this is the first attempt that has been made to give a personal portrait of this great Church leader, and to show what part he had in the civil and religious life of the times in which he lived. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Church in Clarendon When I became bishop I instinctively placed absolute confidence in him, and confidentially consulted him about diocesan matters; his sympathy and friendship were of the greatest help to me. What I found, others had found. He was the trusted friend of clergy and people; being the soul of honour every confidence was sacredly kept. He literally gave himself for the people committed to his charge; in quiet dignity, in manly humility, he joyed and suffered among them and for them. Book excerpt: The Soul of a Bishop By H.G. Wells The Soul of a Bishop tells the story of a spiritual crisis that leads Edward Scrope, Lord Bishop of Princhester, to give up his diocese in England's industrial heartland and leave the Anglican Church. Troubled during World War I by doctrinal doubts and a sense of the irrelevance of his Anglicism as well as nervousness and insomnia, a crisis is precipitated by a visit to a wealthy parishioner's home where he meets an extremely wealthy American widow, Lady Sunderbund. To her he speaks for the first time of his religious discontent. Shortly thereafter he takes a drug that, instead of mitigating his symptoms, gives him "a new and more vivid apprehension of things." The bishop experiences a mystical vision of "the Angel of God" and then God in the North Library of the Athenaeum Club, London. He emerges from the experience convinced that he must leave the Church, but is persuaded by an old mentor, Bishop Likeman, to wait three months before doing anything, during which time he continues in his episcopal duties. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Recollections of a Bishop IT was told of a preacher in Cambridge, very popular in my undergraduate days, that when he was publishing a volume of sermons the supply of proofs suddenly stopped. He complained to the University Press. The manager replied that they had run out of their stock of capital I and they were having some more cast for him. Again, it was told of a well-known bishop, that when he was asked a question about his work, he replied that if he had known all it meant he would have said no when the bishopric was proposed to him. The remark of that bishop expresses my feeling in regard to this book of Recollections. And as one detail, I know that although the printers' stock of capital I has not given out, an indecent amount of it has been used. Over and over again the third person has been tried and has been abandoned, the unfortunate writer sacrificing his own feeling rather than give his reader stilted stuff to read. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Bishop Provoost, of New York The authorities from which the writer has derived his information, in preparing this work, are generally noted at the foot of the pages. But after having gathered his materials, most faithfully, from every printed source, the volume would hardly have been written, but for the kindness of an Old and valued friend, Mr. Thomas N. Stanford, who suggested a way in which some of the private papers of Bishop Provoost might be obtained, and, of the Rev. S. H. Weston, of Trinity Parish, New York, who took the trouble to make application for them. Although the first Bishop of New York will not rank with the most zealous champions of the Church, and his name can never arouse such emotions as that of Hobart, or Griswold, or Ravenscroft, or Chase must excite, he certainly occupies no mean place in the Church's history; and the times in which he lived, and the scenes in which he mingled, render his life most interesting. Then shall Religion to America flee; They have their times of Gospel, e'en as we. My God, thou dost prepare for them a way, By carrying first their gold from them away; For gold and grace did never yet agree; Religion always sides with poverty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office HE object which led to the enterprise of this subject was essentially practical. Considerable outcry had been raised against the interpolation into the service by the Celebrant of parts of the Unreformed Office. The outcry interpreted this action as throwing doubt or discredit on the Office of our Church. And this interpretation is justified by the open avowals of many who are addicted to this practice. They allege defect or deficiency in our Office. Others, indeed, without such allegation or conscious admission, defend their interpolations as conducing to greater fulness or richness. The object of this work in part'is to attempt to disprove the charges of insufficiency and to show the redundancy of such interpolations. The nature of the interpolations in View has been already defined. There is no reference to any private1 intercessions or devo tions of the Celebrant, but to the direct interpolation of portions of other Offices. D., Bishop of Vermont, on the Bible View of Slavery" That this inconsistency was felt, and that the christian heart ac knowledged the incompatibility of Slavery with Christianity, is admirably shown by the prevalent custom, during the middle ages, of manumission at death, (when most men begin to be honest) and sometimes for the good of the soul of the testator, or of the souls of his ancestors. The following, which is a charter of manumission by a French Prince, may serve as a specimen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
