Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To abuse or neglect a child, to deprive the child of his or her own identity and ability to experience joy in life, is to commit soul murder. Soul murder is the perpetration of brutal or subtle acts against children that result in their emotional bondage to the abuser and, finally, in their psychic and spiritual annihilation. In this compelling, disturbing, and superbly readable book, Dr. Leonard Shengold, clinical professor of psychiatry at the New York University School of Medicine, explores the devastating psychological effects of this trauma inflicted on a shocking number of children. Drawing on a lifetime of clinical experience and wide-ranging reading in world literature, Dr. Shengold examines the ravages of soul murder in the adult lives of his patients as well as in the lives and works of such seminal writers as George Orwell, Dickens, Chekhov, and Kipling. One hopeful note in this saga of pain is that a terrible childhood can, if survived, be a source of strength, as Dr. Shengold finds in the cases of Dickens and Orwell. Provocatively original in its approach to literature and psychology, unsettling in its vivid portrayal of the darker side of human nature, far-reaching in its conclusions, Soul Murder will stand alongside such works as Alice Miller's The Drama of the Gifted Child as one of the most important studies of the psyche to appear in decades.

Book excerpt: This book is about a horrific murder. No one deserves to be slaughtered like this victim was, and again, like most evildoings, it was over money. "The love of money is the root of all evil." I never thought this adage to be completely true until this murder case, and my eyes were opened. It is true. The house where this murder occurred is cursed and haunted to this day. For some reason, possibly because of my religious beliefs, I have not had any spiritual problems during and after the serving of four search warrants at this house, but several other officers and crime scene personnel did. I cannot stress the fact enough that this house is evil. I don't know the reason why, but many others have sensed the evil in this property, especially the house, and they refuse to do any more searches with me in this house. And I have decided to never give the location of this house-ever-because I have witnessed what it has done to other people's souls.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this stunning reappraisal of the celebrated case of Daniel Paul Schreber, Lothane takes the reader on a richly documented tour of all the ingredients that made Schreber's illness a unique psychiatric event. Building outward from a close examination of Schreber's troubled relationship to his two psychiatrists, Flechsig and Weber, Lothane elaborates the personal, familial, and cultural contexts of Schreber's illness. Incorporating extensive new archival and bibliographic research, and providing extensive accounts of the personalities and theories of Schreber's two psychiatrists, Paul Flechsig and Guido Weber, Zvi Lothane offers a stunning reappraisal of the Schreber case that overturns virtually all previous opinion. Lothane examines both the man and his milieu in a way that allows the reader fresh access not only to the tragedy of Schreber's illness but also to his heroic, if doomed, attempts to come to terms with his condition through writing. In the process, he persuasively demonstrates that important issues of both psychiatric diagnosis and psychoanalytic interpretation have heretofore been compromised by a failure to pay sufficient attention to Schreber's interpersonal, cultural, and historical contexts.

Book excerpt: Peter Terry Returns A knock at her door. A bloody axe. A murder weapon in her own living room. The elusive white man with the slash on his back is out hunting again, chasing souls. Peter Terry is haunting minds, invading dreams, and wrecking lives. As Dylan Foster searches for answers, she stumbles upon a dark cult of angel worship. Harking back to the days of Noah, it’s now blinding and intoxicating young people, leading them to their deaths. In this battle for souls, everything’s up for grabs, leaving Dylan grasping for strength as the battle rages around her. When at last she discovers the truth, it is far from the truth she expected. “What does Peter Terry want with my son?” “The same thing he wants with all of us. Peter Terry is a hunter,” I said. “He’s hunting souls.” Dylan Foster, a psychology professor at Southern Methodist University, is preparing for a Saturday night date when she hears something at her front door. She opens the door--and a bloody ax falls into her entryway, bringing a young woman’s murder, quite literally, into Dylan's living room. Caught up in a desperate search for answers, Dylan must use her psychologist’s mind and acute spiritual radar to unearth the connections between the murdered girl; the accused murderer and convicted rapist Gordon Pryne; and Peter Terry, the elusive white man with the slash on his back. Peter Terry is hunting again, chasing souls, haunting minds, invading dreams, and wrecking lives. As Dylan draws closer to the answer she seeks, she stumbles upon a discovery that draws her ever deeper into danger. But Dylan cannot find the truth—not until she realizes nothing is as it seems in the fight for the human soul… “The master of supernatural mystery, Melanie Wells delivers big time in The Soul Hunter. A dash of romance and a generous serving of humor, seasoned with grace, makes this a thriller not to be missed.” Kathryn Mackel, author of The Hidden “Part mystery thriller, part comedy of manners, part novel of moral scrutiny, The Soul Hunter showcases Wells’ gift for spinning an intricate tale filled with an edgy mix of humor, suspense, and spiritual intrigue. I swallowed the novel in one deliciously terrified gulp.” K. L. Cook, author of Last Call and The Girl from Charnelle Story Behind the Book “These themes—the reality of spiritual warfare, the faithfulness of God, the significance of seemingly mundane events, the importance of individual faithfulness—have always fascinated me. And Peter Terry is such a compelling character. Writing this book was almost like showing up to see what he would do next! The dimensions of the individual being seemed to spin out, creating fascinating characters and a storyline that wove itself in complicated and unexpected ways.” —Melanie Wells

Book excerpt: The title of this book may seem contradictory - porn "murders" yet your soul commits "suicide." So, which is it - murder or suicide? Actually it is both. There is no contradiction here - the enemy of our souls uses pornography to "murder" us, yet it is we ourselves who hang ourselves with it.Pornography is a murderer, but it doesn't just murder in isolation. It murders romance. It murders a relationship with your spouse. It murders your ability to parent your children with integrity. It murders holiness. It murders a relationship with God. It murders contentment. It murders peace. It murders your own soul. But pornography is also suicide to the soul. It is self-destructive. You yourself hollow out your own soul. You snuff out the life of the Holy Spirit in your own soul. You kill a relationship with your spouse - and with your God.If you view yourself as a "victim" of pornography, you will not find freedom. If you believe you are helpless in the face of this foe, you will not find hope. If you think God hasn't helped you enough, you don't know God as well as you think you do. If you see this as an "unwanted" temptation, then you don't understand your own heart. Unless your heart changes, none of your behavior will change for very long. I see it every day in counseling hurting and lost souls. The ones who merely institute rules, put filters on their phones, have an "accountability" partner and make outward behavioral changes never see their change last for very long. But the ones whose hearts truly change by the power of God using the Word of God - the ones who truly deal with their own lusts, their own demands, their own temper tantrums, their own entitlement mindset - these are the ones who find freedom and peace and contentment and joy in the Holy Spirit. The good news has to be grasped as "the best news ever" not merely as facts to which we assent. The Holy Spirit has to be welcomed and powerfully residing in and filling your soul. God's amazing grace must be seen in its "abounding abundance" (far, far more than you "need") not simply as information or as intellectual facts. The idols have to be smashed and obliterated. The reality of spiritual warfare needs to not only be respected, but also strategically fought by the weapons of God not the weapons of our flesh (2 Corinthians 10:3-4).You can overcome the lure of pornography. Don't let it murder you. You don't have to view it. Don't kill your own soul. My deepest desire is that this book will lead you to find the freedom that can only come through seeking the Lord Jesus Christ through the Word of God by means of the Spirit of God.
