Working together at Hadassah Medical Center, we discovered that we had overlapping and complementary interests. The wonderful surroundings com bined with a warm friendship nourished the development of this book. E. G. S:s interest in neuropsychology, cognitive function, and diagnostic clas sification and A. A R:s interest in the development of normal sexual behavior, incest and its consequences for psychopathology, and psychoanalytic thought provided a broad perspective on the field of somatoform disorders. For E. G. S. , Lawrence A. Lockman, a faculty member in pediatric neurology at the Univer sity of Minnesota who has a great interest in these cases, was particularly helpful. Many of the ideas on case management came from his admonitions to the house staff on rounds regarding proper management of patients and families. When we began to write the book in the fall of 1984, two students of E. G. S:s became involved. Norman Cohen, then a post doc, was very interested in pain and biofeedback, having worked extensively in the Pain Clinic at the University of Minnesota Hospitals. He was seeing many of the children in the clinic who required biofeedback and was especially interested in those with headache. He agreed to write the chapter on headache.

Book excerpt: Somatic complaints in parents of children with somatization: is there a relationship?Introduction:Medically unexplained symptoms are frequently reported in psychiatric clinical samples of children and adolescents. What somatic symptoms are found in parents of children who somatize? The aim is to explore somatic complaints in parents of somatizing children and adolescents and factors conditioning their relationship.Methods:Retrospective cross-sectional study on Tunisian children and adolescents with a negative somatic diagnostic workup, referred for emotional or behavioral problems and their parents. Child somatization was explored via child and parent reports using the Childrenu2019s Somatization Inventory (CSI-24). Parental somatic complaints were explored using the Patient Health Questionnaire 15 (PHQ15).Results:Ninety-six patients were recruited accompanied with their fathers in 13,5% of cases and their mothers in 86,5% of cases. Their average age was of 10,7 years with a sex ratio of 1,2. Patients were diagnosed mainly with trauma and stressor related disorders (39.8%). Mean score on the CSI-Child report was 40,9. It was significantly correlated with parentsu2019 reports (p=0,000). Parents were classified according to PHQ15 scores into mild to moderate somatization disorder (44%) and severe somatization disorder (24%). Children scored significantly higher on CSI-24 in this latter group (mean: 51,6 vs 37,8; p=0,008). When comparing the occurrence of each somatic symptom jointly in children and parents, headaches and limb pain were more prevalent in children when they were experienced by their parents (respectively p=0,023, P=0,017). Conclusion:Parental somatic complaints can influence the frequency and type of childrensu2019 somatization. The degree of this influence is dependent on many factors including severity of parental somatization.
