Book excerpt: The first edition of Sexual Conduct, published in 1973, swiftly became a landmark text in the sociology of sexuality. It went on to profoundly shape the ideas of several generations of scholars and has become the foundation text of what is now known as the "social constructionist" approach to sexuality. The present edition, revised, updated, and containing new introductory and concluding materials, introduces a classic text to a new generation of students and professionals.Traditional views of human sexuality posit models of man and woman in which biological arrangements are translated into sociocultural imperatives. This is best summarized in the phrase "anatomy is destiny." Consequently, the almost exclusive concern has been with the power of biology and nature in sexual conduct as opposed to understanding the significance and impact of social life. In Sexual Conduct, Gagnon and Simon lucidly argue that sexual activities, of all kinds, may be understood as the outcome of a complex psychosocial process of development. Using the social script theory, the authors trace the ways in which sexuality is learned and fitted into particular moments in the lifecycle and in different modes of behavior.Sexual Conduct is a major attempt to consider sexuality within a non-biological, social psychological framework. It is a valuable addition to the study of human sexuality, and will be of interest to students of sociology, psychology, psychiatry, social work, and medicine.

Book excerpt: The only book of its kind, Human Sexuality, Ethnoculture, and Social Work combines information about ethnocultural groups in the United States with a focus on issues about sexuality. The authors, each a member of the group about which he or she writes, contribute a unique understanding and perspective within a common conceptual framework. The basic details provide readers with the background about the cultures in general--black, Mexican, native Hawaiian and Samoan, Japanese, Jewish Philippino and Puerto Rican--with an emphasis on human sexuality. Invaluable data is included about behavior, attitudes, gender roles, family patterns, and child socialization. Social workers and other helping professionals, as well as scholars in the areas of sexuality and culture, will increase their understanding and their ability to work with clients from different ethnocultural backgrounds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection aims to fill in the deep gaps of vital contributions that have been erased from the sexuality field, illuminating the historical and current work, strategies, solutions, and thoughts from sexologists that have been excluded until now. Historically, the US sexuality field has not included the experiences and wisdom of racialized sexologists, educators, therapists, or professionals. Instead, sexuality professionals have been trained using a color-free narrative that does an injustice by excluding their work as well as failing to offer a fuller examination of how they have expanded the field and held it accountable. The result of this wholesale erasure is that today many sexuality professionals understand these contributions as extra or tangential, and not part of the full vision and history of the field of sexology. Highlighting the voices and experiences of those who have been racialized and thus excluded, isolated, erased, and yet have still emerged as vital contributors to the North American sexuality field, this text offers a significant shift in the way we learn and understand sexuality, one that is expansive and committed to liberation, healing, equity, and justice. Divided into three sections addressing safety, movement, and oral narratives, the contributors offer insightful and provoking chapters that discuss reproductive justice, LGBTQ themes, racial and social justice, and gender, and disability justice, demonstrating how these sexologists have been leaders, past and present, in change and progression. This futuristic textbook includes correction, engaged reading, and lesson plans which offers community workers and trainers an opportunity to use the text in their non-traditional learning environments. Creating a path forward that many believed was impossible, this accessible book is for all who work in and around sexuality. It welcomes inquiry and celebrates our humanity for the worlds we are building now and for the future.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Psychology - Work, Business, Organisation, grade: B, Stanford University, language: English, abstract: Sexuality, by means of which man and woman give themselves to one another through the acts which are exact and exclusive to better half, is by no means something purely biological, but concerns the closer to center point being of the human person as such. It is recognized in a truly human way only if it is an integral part of the love by which a man and a woman commit themselves totally to one another until their death. (Peplau 37) In the regards of a culture which seriously distorts or entirely misguide the true meaning of human sexuality, because it separates it from its necessary reference to the person, the Church more urgently feels how irreplaceable is her mission of presenting sexuality as a value and task of the whole person, created male and female in the image of God. (Justin 212) Sexuality affects all aspects of the human person in the unity of his body and mortal. It related affectivity, the capacity to love and to procreate and in a more general way the aptitude for forming bonds of communion with others. (Peplau 39) DIMENSION OF HUMAN SEXUALITY Human sexuality is an important part of our personality. It requires the interrelationship of psychological, biological and sociocultural dimension. The Alberta Society for the Promotion of Sexual Health (ASPSH) shows that sexuality means many things like – what feeling about us, what role we play in society and reproduction. Along with, The Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS) explain human sexuality as surrounding the sexual knowledge, attitudes, value, belief and behavior of individuals. In this several dimension include the shape the human body, physiology and biochemistry of the sexual response system like –roles, identity, personality, thought, feeling and relationship.
