This book was released on 1978 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Important quantities of gold, silver, platinum-group metals, selenium, tellurium, and arsenic are recovered in the processing of copper concentrates. The objective of this Bureau of Mines study was to determine the occurence of these elements in copper ores and to trace their distribution during subsequent processing steps. The study describes the important areas supplying concentrates, precipitates, and unrefined copper to the copper smelting and refining ndustry in a composite of the years 1971-74. The relative importance of these areas as a source of the respective byproducts is assessed. The lack of certain quantitative and assay data, recycling of dusts and slags, and the addition of scrap to the feed often complicates calculations and estimations of the byproducts in the smelter-refinery throughptus. Such volatile or low-boiling point elements as arsenic, slenium, nad tellurium may be lost in gaseous and other emissions in various processign stages, or they may be concentrated in slags and residues for which samples were not available. the effects of antipollution legislation to improve control of sulfurous and other emissions that may affect recovery of certain byprodcuts was noted. A section on newer technology illustrating hydrometallurgical techniques that may affect the recovery of minor metals is included.

PREFACE The aim of this book is to present a discussion of the various methods employed in winning copper from its ores and in refining the metal to commercial grade. Examples of modern practice are included to illustrate the application of these methods, but no attempt has been ma-le to compile a complete and exhaustive treatise on the practice all over the world. Such a treatise might well require several volumes. onfining the discussion largely to the extraction and refining of r, it has been possible to touch only lightly on several related cts because of space limitation. The chapter on ore dressing is m. ly a summary to indicate the methods used in dressing copper ores and the nature of the resulting concentrates. It was not possible to consider the subject of copper alloys in any great detail. An attempt has been made to give credit at the proper place for all material used in the book. The authors extend their thanks to the various mining, smelting, refining, and manufacturing companies, and to the publishing companies for their kind and willing cooperation. JOSEPH NEWTON CURTIS L. Its use marked the transitory step in the progress of civilization from the Stone Age to the Metal Age. Although gold, owing to its sparkling yellow color, its high luster, its resistance to corrosion and tarnish, and its occurrence in the free or elemental state in nature, was unquestionably the first metal to attract the attention of man, and although in certain localities iron, 1 in the form of meteorites or even obtained by the reduction of the oxide with charcoal, may have been used before copper, nevertheless every ancient metal culture was actually introduced by the use of copper. 2 In the form of pure metal, fashioned first by the crude hammering of masses of native copper and later by melting, and in the form of bronze, obtained by smelting mixed tin and copper ores, it was employed originally for ornaments and statues and then as tools, domestic utensils, implements of war, and for every purpose in which its strength, hardness, and toughness proved its superiority to stone, wood, and other materials. When the methods of producing iron evolved from the direct processes through the cast iron period to puddling, cementation, and the crucible process, iron and steel usurped coppers position of first importance and withthe advent of the Bessemer and open-hearth processes, ferrous materials attained such ease of large-scale production and such widespread use that they almost eclipsed copper The age of electricity, however, introduced new requirements for materials to be used in the generation and transmission of electrical energy copper immediately entered its rejuvenation 3 and assumed firs place in importance in the electrical field and second in general utility in our present-day civilization. 1 Howe, H M, The Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron, p...

(6) Columns for Discount on Purchases and Discount on Notes on the same side of the Cash Book; (c) Columns for Discount on Sales and Cash Sales on the debit side of the Cash Book; (d) Departmental columns in the Sales Book and in the Purchase Book. Controlling Accounts.--The addition of special columns in books of original entry makes possible the keeping of Controlling Accounts. The most common examples of such accounts are Accounts Receivable account and Accounts Payable account. These summary accounts, respectively, displace individual customers' and creditors' accounts in the Ledger. The customers' accounts are then segregated in another book called the Sales Ledger or Customers' Ledger, while the creditors' accounts are kept in the Purchase or Creditors' Ledger. The original Ledger, now much reduced in size, is called the General Ledger. The Trial Balance now refers to the accounts in the General Ledger. It is evident that the task of taking a Trial Balance is greatly simplified because so many fewer accounts are involved. A Schedule of Accounts Receivable is then prepared, consisting of the balances found in the Sales Ledger, and its total must agree with the balance of the Accounts Receivable account shown in the Trial Balance. A similar Schedule of Accounts Payable, made up of all the balances in the Purchase Ledger, is prepared, and it must agree with the balance of the Accounts Payable account of the General Ledger." The Balance Sheet.--In the more elementary part of the text, the student learned how to prepare a Statement of Assets and Liabilities for the purpose of disclosing the net capital of an enterprise. In the present chapter he was shown how to prepare a similar statement, the Balance Sheet. For all practical...
