Book excerpt: The story of the people on the Norwegian Mayflower--The Sloop, "Restoration." The first 10 chapters present the background of the voyage, the voyage itself and the settling of this group in this country during the first 25 years (1825-50). The subsequent 13 chapters are devoted to family histories. These family chapters start with what is known about the ancestors of a particular Slooper group, going back many generations, in some cases as far back as the 1100's. Family chapters also include a listing of descendant names that the author was able to document up to the printing of the book in 1961. A 24th and final chapter is devoted to "Associate Sloopers" or those not necessarily on the Sloop but who played a significant role in the story (these include Cleng Peerson, Knud Olsen Eide, mate Peder Eriksen Meland, Andreas Knutsen Stangeland, Knud Anderson Slogvik, and Jon Jonsoen Eide. A multipart appendix is found in the rear of the book as well as both "Family" and "General" indices. A large number of names, addresses and photographs of Slooper descendants can be found in this book.

Book excerpt: Norway received its name from the nearby rural community of settlers from Norway in the area known as the Fox River Settlement. The village was the center of Norwegian immigration dating to 1834. The settlers had in large part relocated from the Kendall Settlement in New York State which had been founded earlier by pioneers who arrived from Norway during 1825 aboard the Restauration. Norwegian-American pioneer leader Cleng Peerson founded this second settlement in the Fox River Valley of Illinois.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on The First Chapter of Norwegian Immigration, written by Rasmus Anderson in 1895. He was spellbound by tales his neighbors told about their pioneer life. He was the first professor of Scandinavian Studies anywhere in the United States. As old pioneers were dying off, he began a letter writing campaign to ask them to write down their memories. Anderson added excerpts of old interviews of pioneers from Billet-Magazin. This book, The First Norwegian Settlements in America is an abridged version of Anderson's book. The sequence has completely changed. Additional research has been added. Photos from the Library of Congress, the New York Public Library and public domain sources have added to more richly illustrate and add meaning to this work. If we want to understand our Norwegian-American roots, it is important to learn about our immigrant ancestors. Hopefully, this book will help broaden your understanding of your Nordic heritage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As historian Gunnar Nerheim states in his introduction, “Norway is a foreign country to Texans, and Texas is a foreign country to Norwegians. Neither in Norway nor Texas has there been any awareness that so many Norwegians settled in antebellum Texas.” Norsemen Deep in the Heart of Texas brings Norwegian settlement in Texas to light and in doing so offers the first-ever comprehensive history of Norwegians in Texas. Fluent in both English and Norwegian, Nerheim has done what no other historian has done by combining primary and secondary sources from both languages and both countries. A well-established European scholar, Nerheim examines these never-before-referenced sources, telling the story of Norwegian immigration to Texas, explaining the contexts of Norwegian immigration to Texas in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and uncovering its significance to the histories of both countries. The larger historical context reveals that immigration to Texas operated as part of dynamic circumstances on both sides of the Atlantic, including slavery and the Civil War. Drawn from the perspectives of both regions, the history of Norwegian settlement in Texas provide new insights into European immigration. Readers interested in Texas, Norwegian, and trans-Atlantic history, as well as nineteenth-century immigration, will find new horizons in Norsemen Deep in the Heart of Texas.
