Book Synopsis Character, Narrator, and Simile in the Iliad by : Jonathan L. Ready
Download or read book Character, Narrator, and Simile in the Iliad written by Jonathan L. Ready and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan L. Ready offers the first comprehensive examination of Homer's similes in the Iliad as arenas of heroic competition. This study concentrates primarily on similes spoken by Homeric characters. The first to offer a sustained exploration of such similes, Ready shows how characters are made to contest through and over simile not only with one another but also with the narrator. Ready investigates the narrator's similes as well. He demonstrates that Homer amplifies the feat of a successful warrior by providing a competitive orientation to sequences of similes used to describe battle. He also offers a new interpretation of Homer's extended similes as a means for the poet to imagine his characters as competitors for his attention. Throughout this study, Ready makes innovative use of approaches from both Homeric studies and narratology that have not yet been applied to the analysis of Homer's similes.

Download or read book The Similes of Homer's Iliad written by Homer Homer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Similes of Homer's Iliad: Translated, With Introduction and Notes Homer may, I think, be called the Father of simile; for, whatever date we assign to the Homeric poems, their author will remain the earliest Greek poet who has elaborated the simile; and from him, in matter or manner, those that came after have directly or indirectly borrowed. Hence his similes are of peculiar interest; and they seemed to be worth grouping together and illustrating from other and later poets, especially from our own. Book excerpt: Richimond Lattimore's elegant and exceptionally faithful line-by-line translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey introduced these classics to a new audience of English readers. Now The Chicago Homer presents an easily searchable, web-accessible database of Homer in the original and in Lattimore's translations. The Greek texts of the Homeric Hymns and the poems of Hesiod are also included, along with English translations by Daryl Hine, providing students and scholars with unparalleled access to the whole of Early Greek epic. In addition to providing Greek and English texts in an interlinear display, The Chicago Homer gives complete information (tense, mood, voice, case, gender, and number) on the morphology of each Greek word. Invaluable for students learning Greek, this information is also important to researchers investigating the frequency or distribution of grammatical phenomena; only The Chicago Homer provides these data in readily searchable electronic form. But the most distinctive feature of The Chicago Homer is its ability to analyze and display the wealth of repeated phrases -- such as" rosy-fingered dawn" and "swift-footed Achilles" -- that are considered to be the hallmark of Homeric poetry. For the first time in any medium, The Chicago Homer presents a complete index of all repeated phrases in Early Greek epic. These phrases may be sorted by a number of criteria, including length, frequency, who spoke them, and the words they contain. Most impor

Download or read book Homer written by Mark W. Edwards and published by Johns Hopkins University Press. This book was released on 1990-02-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homer: Poet of the "Iliad" is the perfect companion both for readers deepening their appreciation of the poem and its form and for those encountering Homer's work for the first time. Mark Edwards combines the advantages of a general introduction and a detailed commentary to make the insights of recent Homeric scholarship accessible to students and general readers as well as to classicists. Since interpretation of the epic requires an understanding of the ancient oral tradition and its conventions, Edwards offers a comprehensive analysis of the poetics of the Iliad and the Odyssey. He also discusses essential elements of Homeric society -- its religion, history, and social values -- to clarify the style and substance of the poetry. In the second half of the book, Edwards's scene-by-scene explication of ten major books of the Iliad leads the reader to a greater perception of Homer's mastery and manipulation of convention.

Book Synopsis Memorial: A Version of Homer's Iliad by : Alice Oswald
Download or read book Memorial: A Version of Homer's Iliad written by Alice Oswald and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2012-09-10 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The most remarkable and affecting book of poetry I encountered this year.”—James Wood, The New Yorker In this daring new work, the poet Alice Oswald strips away the narrative of the Iliad—the anger of Achilles, the story of Helen—in favor of attending to its atmospheres: the extended similes that bring so much of the natural order into the poem and the corresponding litany of the war-dead, most of whom are little more than names but each of whom lives and dies unforgettably and unforgotten in the copious retrospect of Homer’s glance. The resulting poem is a war memorial and a profoundly responsive work that gives new voice to Homer’s level-voiced version of the world. Through a mix of narrative and musical repetition, the sequence becomes a meditation on the loss of human life.
