Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Short Story in English In the first place, it must be admitted that the follow ing pages betray a preoccupation' with the short story, so much so, indeed, that certain chapters may suggest the robin who saw only earthworms on the field of Gettysburg. I have applied, whenever possible, such remedy as a careful relating of the stories under discussion to other literature could afford. If space had permitted, I would have gone further afield. Yet it is not to be forgotten that when earthworms are desired, a certain narrow-mindedness is almost indispensable! Next, I must apologize for what I hope is only an appearance of evil. Such a book as this moves insensibly towards the doctrinaire. Much of its field is new, un ploughed, unfenced, almost unsurveyed. Tale must be classed with tale, or a difference set between them, and lines of development must be run from story-group to story-group; otherwise, the material unearthed by reading and study, and exhibited in the completed work, will remain unfit for assimilation, unplaced in literary history. For all this, theories are necessary, and much talk about the theoretical. Nevertheless, in establishing my theories, I have tried to keep footing upon a solid base of observed fact. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Stories for English Courses Why must we confine the reading of our children to the older literary classics? This is the question asked by an ever-increasing number of thoughtful teachers. They have no wish to displace or to discredit the clas sics. On the contrary, they love and revere them. But they do wish to give their pupils something additional. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to construct a nuanced narrative or complex character in the constrained form of the short story has sometimes been seen as the ultimate test of an author's creativity. Yet during the time when the short story was at its most popular - the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries - even the greatest writers followed strict generic conventions that were far from subtle. This expanded and updated translation of Florence Goyet's influential La Nouvelle, 1870-1925: Description d'un genre à son apogée (Paris, 1993) is the only study to focus exclusively on this classic period across different continents. Ranging through French, English, Italian, Russian and Japanese writing - particularly the stories of Guy de Maupassant, Henry James, Giovanni Verga, Anton Chekhov and Akutagawa Ry?nosuke - Goyet shows that these authors were able to create brilliant and successful short stories using the very simple 'tools of brevity' of that period. In this challenging and far-reaching study, Goyet looks at classic short stories in the context in which they were read at the time: cheap newspapers and higher-end periodicals. She demonstrates that, despite the apparent intention of these stories to question bourgeois ideals, they mostly affirmed the prejudices of their readers. In doing so, her book forces us to re-think our preconceptions about this 'forgotten' genre.

I was born in the parsonage-house, which joins the church-yard. The first thing I can remember was my father teaching me the alphabet from the letters on a tombstone that stood at the head of my mother's grave. I used to tap at my father's study-door; I think I now hear him say, 'Who is there? - What do you want, little girl?' 'Go and see mamma. Go and learn pretty letters.' Many times in the day would my father lay aside his books and his papers to lead me to this spot, and make me point to the letters, and then set me to spell syllables and words: in this manner, the epitaph on my mother's tomb being my primer and my spelling-book, I learned to read. I was one day sitting on a step placed across the church-yard stile, when a gentleman passing by, heard me distinctly repeat the letters which formed my mother's name, and then say, Elizabeth Villiers, with a firm tone, as if I had performed some great matter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Types of the Short Story: Selected Stories With Reading Lists The prominence of the short story as a literary form has led to the preparation of several textbooks on the subject. Some of these are treatises on the technique of the short story, others give specimens selected to show the historical development of the type. But a course in the writing of short stories belongs in college work, and the study of the evolution of literary forms has its proper place in the university. The present volume is prepared for the high school student. It does not aim to trace 'the develop ment of the short story, but accepting it as a literary type, considers the chief forms in which it is found today. To this end thirteen stories, each illustrating a well-defined type, are presented. Each selection is followed by brief comment and a list of other stories of the same type, the purpose being to lead the student to a wider and more intelligent reading in this enjoyable field of literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories New and Old: Typical American and English Tales Two facts about the short-story are very signifi cant: it is probably the oldest literary form, and it was the latest in point of time to receive exact definition of its purpose and scope and full unfold ing of its artistic and dramatic resources. The first act means that the short-story is a vital and not an artificial form of literature, and fits itself easily and almost instinctively to certain impulses and interests of men; the second fact the fact that the short story had to wait for the insight and skill of men of the genius of Poe, Hawthorne, Stevenson, Kipling, and Maupassant means that as a literary form the short-story ranks with the highest and most exact ing forms of art. The epic had immense popularity, and for centuries took the place of the history, the story of adventure, the novel, the magazine, and the newspaper; but the epic, by reason of the breadth and volume of human action which it records, has been less exacting in the matter of structure and. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Modern English Stories: An Anthology George Meredith's five short stories are each as long as the average novelette, and accordingly he is not represented in this collection, but they have the unity of the true short story, and in them there is a keen preoccupation with the subtleties of characterisation which was hitherto uncommon intheenglish, asopposedtotheamerican, short story. I suppose his masterpiece in this genre is The Tale of Chloe, a delicately woven study of place, idyllic in its portraiture, whose outward frailty conceals vigorous delineation and a poignancy deftly rendered by suggestion.
