Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sheep Eaters The Sheep Eaters were a tribe of Indians that became extinct about fifty years ago, and what remaining history there is of this tribe is inscribed upon granite walls of rock in Wyoming and Montana, and in a few defiles and canyons, together with a few arrows and tepees remaining near Black Canyon, whose stream empties into the Big Horn River. Bald Mountain still holds the great shrine wheel, where the twenty-eight tribes came semi-annually to worship the sun, and in the most inaccessible places may still be found the remains of a happy people. Small in stature and living among the clouds, this proud race lived a happy life far removed from all other Indians. Book excerpt: Drawing on extensive ethnographic work among descendant native peoples and ongoing archaeological excavations, Mountain Spirit shows that many groups have visited or lived in the area in prehistoric and historic times. Primary among them was the Shoshone group called Tukudika, or Sheep Eaters, who maintained a rich and abundant way of life closely related to their primary source of protein, the mountain sheep of the high-altitude Yellowstone area.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sheep and the Goats She looked in the cool, Shaded drawing-room for a figure which had been wont, of late, to take large possession of that pleasant place, seizing upon its easiest chair, lopping over either end Of its sofa, squatting, with the grace inseparable from its long, limber proportions, on the floor, if that position happened to commend itself. Now the room was empty. SO was the wide garden, through which she searched in vain for the form which SO frequently basked on its sunny lawns, and haunted its shady nooks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sheep-Stealers In the earlier half of the nineteenth century, when most of the travelling done by our grandfathers was done by road, and the intercourse between districts by no means far apart was but small, a tract of country lying at the foot of the Black Mountain, which rises just inside the Welsh border, was as far behind the times of which I speak, as though it had been a hundred miles from any town. Where the Great Western engines now roar down the Wye valley, carrying the traveller who makes his journey in spring through orchards full of pink blossom, the roads then lay in peaceful and unsophisticated quiet. Soon after leaving Hereford, the outline of the mountain might be seen raising itself like an awakening giant, over green hedges and rich meadow-land from the midst of the verdure and cultivation. Between its slopes and the somewhat oppressive luxuriance through which the river ran, a band of country totally unlike either of these in character, encircled the mountain's foot, and made a kind of intermediate stage between the desolate grandeur of the Twmpa (as the highest summit was called) and the parish of Crishowell with its farmyards and hayfields far beneath. The lanes leading up from Crishowell village were so steep that it was impossible for carts to ascend them, and the sheep-grazing population which inhabited the hill farms above, had to go up and down to the market-town of Llangarth, either on foot or on ponies brought in from the mountain runs. Book excerpt: It is the early 1860s and twelve-year-old Erik Larson and his Swedish family are headed west in a wagon train from Minnesota to find a valley in pre-Idaho Territory. The family holds high hopes that their new home will provide the happiness they seek-that is, until a deadly illness strikes. When Erik's own mother becomes ill, the wagon master decides to push ahead, intent on outracing a blizzard. Unfortunately, winter arrives with a vengeance, and with his sister far ahead in another wagon, Erik is stranded with his parents. After his father experiences a fatal fall, Erik and his mother face a brutal winter-alone on the windswept prairie. Erik is convinced that to survive he must seek help from the Sheepeater Indians. After he meets the Sheepeaters, he deals with prejudice and life-threatening danger and begins to question everything he's ever believed. Without the skills to hunt or fish, Erik must confront an agonizing choice-either perish or abandon everything and become a member of the Sheepeaters. A poignant partnership soon unfolds between the Native Americans and a white man who has just one dream-to reunite with his sister.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Whetting Uncle Sam's Appetite for Lamb Returning once more to general conditions, three percent of America s meat diet is lamb against twenty percent of Britain's. The English household has the meat once a week, while in this country once in three or four weeks is the rule. Hindrances TO A bigger A lot of folks dislike lamb because somebody lamb trade else told them so. They have never taken the trouble to look into the matter for themselves. If the sheep, like the cow, didn't have How many skins and one of these adhered to the pelt tighter than it does to the meat, the chances are lamb would be far more popular than it is today. This fell, or thin papery membrane that surrounds the carcass has little or no food value and it should be removed before it is cooked. It is more objectionable in the older meat than in lamb. There is but one safe rule to follow with regard to it, always remove it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Since 1983, Aki Kaurismäki has made classically styled films filled with cinephilic references to film history, influencing Jim Jarmusch, Quentin Tarantino and Wes Anderson. Yet the director is often depicted as the loneliest, most nostalgic of Finns (except when promoting his films, making political statements and running his many businesses). Drawing on revisionist approaches to film authorship, this text links Kaurismäki's work to issues in film aesthetics and history, nostalgia, late modernity, commerce, film festivals, and national cinema.
