Book excerpt: Two devoted lovers live twice, once as ancient warriors and once living quiet lives in the twentieth century. In ancient time, Sikeemila comes upon young Tay Nee in the woods. Along with her grandfather, she welcomes him into their small family. They are bound by a sacred quest but hated in the world of men for their blood and hunted by those who would oppose them. In the twentieth century, Joe and Astrid meet as kids by the sea. Childhood sweethearts, they grow up to marry and have children of their own. Joe is a quiet academic engaged in obscure scholarship with radical historical implications, while Astrid is a gifted artist whose work gains worldwide interest. The two disparate lives of the lovers are joined through uncanny dreams and are ultimately unified by a vision, revealed to be the source of the quest for the sacred stone.

Book excerpt: The Speculum musicae of Magister Jacobus de Ispania from Lige is the ultimate Medieval Summa of music. Compiled probably during the 1330s, it comprises no fewer than seven books, altogether totaling more than 375,000 words. Princeton musicologist Rob C. Wegman offers a translation of the seventh and final book, which deals with contemporary polyphony. This part of the Speculum is the notorious-and uncommonly impassioned-diatribe against new musical and notational practices that had gained currency in France in the second quarter of the fourteenth century. Jacobus proves himself thoroughly schooled in Scholastic philosophy and prosecutes the case with relentless determination, using his consummate rhetorical skills and his fierce critical intelligence to full advantage. What drove him to launch the attack was his sense of personal loyalty to the music and musicians he had loved during his years as a university student at Paris, probably in the 1290s, as well as his faith in the decisive power of rigorous and methodical reasoning. Yet to his infinite sadness, his demonstrations proved of little avail against the more powerful contemporary forces of changing musical taste and practical expediency. Magister Jacobus concludes his treatise with a moving prayer of thanksgiving, in which he looks forward to the life to come, and appears ready to part from this world, which had so bitterly disappointed him in his final years.

Book excerpt: Five crows means silver, six crows mean gold, seven crows mean a secret that’s never been told. “Shelly asked her brother Jason, ‘Are you scared to go in?’” There was something might spooky about that huge old clapboard structure behind the sand dunes and the sea oats. It was as gray as the stormy twilight sky behind it and the rolling waves of the Gulf in front of it and the Spanish moss that hung on the bent and twisted live oak and cedar trees all around it. Shelley’s family moves into an old mansion on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and discover that there is a mystery to be solved and a treasure to be found before the house can really belong to them. Shelley wants to solve the mystery all by herself...but encounters danger...intriguing clues...a poltergeist...and spooky Gulf Coast legends. “A well-constructed mystery and good reading.” –Library Journal
