That the construction1?so to speak?of space, or the natural lay and varying density of the original, atomic principle filling the void bounds, is that of Ethereal ' shells, ' or transparent.1 crystalline ' Oceans;' each far out and surrounding a solid sphere at the 2)oint of its vast, vacuitom2 center; and perpetually raining down to that sphere in the manner of a complementary vortex. Thus, the outer ' ocean ' through its vortex is emptying itself into its sphere. This theory, though assuming somewhat the same title, and being derivatively similar to the ancient ' Ptolemaic5 heavens, ' is yet fundamentally different; perhaps, as that embryo6?astronomical system of the more antique Philosopher was superseded by the Copernican theory.1 The present theory assumes that a celestial vorte'x tends to widen latitudinally,8 as well (though at a lesser rate) as it does longitudinally,6 as it diverges outward from the center, until it finally and most remotely partakes of the real, speroidal16 form. As the center is receded from, the rotary motion of the crystal whirlpool grows weaker and weaker, until at last, the centrifugal force nearly, if not entirely ceases, when the vortex relaxes and widens out even to the celestial vertical of its axial poles. From thence, the spheroidal form retains throughout the exterior, rare, invisible, hollow ocean of space. It will be perceived, that the great, external zone, or ocean of ether is, itself the source of the vortex, and, therefore, must contract a...

Book Synopsis Creation in Paul and Philo by : Jonathan D. Worthington
Download or read book Creation in Paul and Philo written by Jonathan D. Worthington and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2011 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God's creative activity in the beginning is important to many aspects of Paul's theology. Jonathan Worthington explores Paul's protology by analyzing his interpretation of scripture concerning creation, mainly the beginning of Genesis. By examining Paul's exegetical manoeuvres within 1-2 Corinthians and Romans, and by comparing these with the contemporary but more detailed treatments of the same texts by Philo of Alexandria in his formal commentary on Genesis 1-2, De Opificio Mundi, the author uncovers an approach to creation that is fundamental to both ancient interpreters. Paul's interpretation of creation, like Philo's in his commentary, contains three interwoven aspects: the beginning of the world, the beginning of humanity, and God's intentions before the beginning. Recognizing this basic hermeneutical interplay between the Beginning and the Before facilitates a more appropriate comparison between Paul and Philo as well as a more adequate treatment of difficult and debated passages in both interpreters regarding creation.

Book Synopsis The Canon of Supreme Mystery by Yang Hsiung by : Michael Nylan
Download or read book The Canon of Supreme Mystery by Yang Hsiung written by Michael Nylan and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a translation, with a commentary and a long contextualizing introduction, of the only major work of Han (206 B.C. to 220 A.D.) philosophy that is still available in complete form. It is the first translation of the work into a European language and provides unique access to this formative period in Chinese history. Because Yang Hsiung's interpretations drew upon a variety of pre-Han sources and then dominated Confucian learning until the twelfth century, this text is also a valuable resource on early Chinese history, philosophy, and culture beyond the Han period. The T'ai hsüan is also one of the world's great philosophic poems comparable in scale and grandeur to Lucretius' De rerum naturum. Nathan Sivin has written that this is one of the titles on the short list of Chinese books every cultivated person should read. Han thinkers saw in this text a compelling restatement of Confucian doctrine that addressed the major objections posed by rival schools including Mohism, Taoism, Legalism and Yin-Yang Five Phase Theory. Since this Han amalgam formed the basis for the state ideology of China from 134 B.C. to 1911, an ideology that in turn provided the intellectual foundations for the Japanese and Korean states, the importance of this book can hardly be overestimated.
