Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Serpentine, 1923, Vol. 12 During her busy years of teaching, Miss never ceased to be a student. Incidentally, she has acquired a taste for taking degrees. During the school year of 1915-1916 she betook herself to the University of Michigan, where she took her ab. That. But whetted her appetite-se by dint of summer schools and much midnight electricity, she wrote her thesis Some Uses of Religious Material in the Poetry of the eighteen-nineties and in 1921 was granted her m.a. From the University of Chicago; it would not seem rash to surmise that. She cast. Her ambitious eye on a not too distant Ph.l). These are the higher institutions of learning which have ministered to Miss mccarthy's scholastic needs: University of Missouri, Columbia University, University of Geneva, Switzerland, University of Pennsylvania, University of Michigan, University of Chicago. But she has received her broadest develop ment from her constant devotion to standard and current literature. She is a wide and appreciative reader of most books, new and old, worth the reading. One summer Miss Goshen crossed the Atlantic, wandered through the parts of England most interesting to her, and Spent the remainder of the summer on the Continent visiting the larger cities, and then south to sunny Greece, where She had her thrill of thrills when she stood upon the Acropolis and gazed at the far famed Parthenon. Endowed by kind Mother Nature with ready wit and a very lively sense of humor, - always quick to see the funny side and enjoy it with others, - ever open minded and genial, - with a highly developed sense of justice and fair-place, - Miss Goshen is a true and loyal friend. And those, who know her best, most appreciate her sterling qualities. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The serious business of the play began with the appearance of the stars and experienced actors, who made the cast total one thousand three hundred twenty. The usual theme was recognized with the imposition of freshman regulations, which culminated in the traditional pajama parade for the men. Variation was successfully and adequately provided by the innovation of night football on Wayne Field. Unprecedented enthusiasm and spirit displayed under the floodlights and the publication of a new fight song written by Ted Williams and Paul Giersch, two of the leading characters, attested to the popularity of this addition.
