Book excerpt: This book argues the idea that Shakespeare was deeply engaged with other poets and with pursuing a career as a poet, and that the organisational schemes of the Sonnets have been hiding in plain sight for over four centuries. The fundamental reason why his schemes have gone unnoticed is historical: within decades of his death, conventions of sonnet sequences became unfamiliar, and they have largely remained so since. Weaving together ideas of the Sonnets as a free-standing sequence and as a sonnet sequence among other poets' complex sequences, we discover new insights into Shakespeare's career as a poet.

Book excerpt: Testimonials From Wenonah Sharpe, Oxfordian Scholar: Fascinating reading . . . often more sympathetic to our life experiences and common sense than some interpretations I've seen. An at-times-dizzying new interpretation of the Sonnets and of the Shakespeare conundrum--negating the conventional wisdom that there is nothing new to be said about Shakespeare. Dr. Gordon's close reading of the Sonnets sometimes contrasts with other new theories, sometimes agrees or even augments them....Her explication of the notoriously opaque introduction to the Sonnets compels attention despite our reflexive distrust of ciphers and anagrams.... . From Karen Whicker Ellis, English teacher I wish I'd had Helen Gordon's book when I was teaching Shakespeare's sonnets to high school students. They would have found the paraphrases extremely helpful and the love story strongly compelling. Her insightful commentaries on the sonnets are both enjoyable and revealing. They certainly cast new light on Shakespeare's sonnets with unusual, refreshing interpretations -- a must-read for all lovers of English literature. From Heidi Winn, M. S., Licensed Psychotherapist As a long-time admirer of both Shakespeare's and Dr. Gordon's literary work, I was entranced by The Secret Love Story in Shakespeare's Sonnets. I found it hard to put down, as I couldn't wait to discover what was hidden in the next sonnet! Even readers who are not well-versed in Shakespearean literature will enjoy this intriguing, encrypted love story. Heidi Winn, M.S. Licensed Psychotherapist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this lively, fascinating account of the publication of Shakespeare's Sonnets, noted biographer Clinton Heylin brings their convoluted history to light, beginning with the first complete appearance of the Sonnets in print in May, 1609. He introduces us to the "unholy alliance" involved in this precarious enterprise: Thomas Thorpe, the publisher, a self-described "well wishing adventurer;" George Eld, the printer, heavily embroiled in large-scale pirating; William Aspley, the prestigious bookseller, who mysteriously ended his association with Thorpe soon after. Leaving the calamitous world of Elizabethan publishing, Heylin goes on to chart the many editions of the Sonnets through the years and the editorial decisions that led to their present configuration. Passionate, astute, and brilliantly entertaining, the result is a concise and vivid history of perhaps the greatest poetry ever written.

TESTIMONIALS "Gordon intelligently and humanely explicates well over five dozen of the poems, providing the sonnets themselves, thorough and straightforward paraphrases, and concise but never hasty discussions. Sonnets are arranged thematically rather than in their standard 1609 published order, since Gordon believes that they were written at various times and prompted by a variety of circumstances . While [Helen] Vendler's explications of the Sonnets are more thorough and microscopic, Gordon's here are significantly more engaging and alive." -Review by Michael Delahoyde, Rocky Mountain Review of Language and Literature (Fall, 2007)- "Both Jo and I have finished reading your excellent book: "Secret Love Story".. Your explanation of the sonnets is far and away the best interpretation that we have ever seen. I [tend] to be suspicious of [other authors] fitting every sonnet into a tightly structured time frame.. Your interpretation makes such good sense. It was also a compelling read." -From Ian Haste, Oxfordian scholar- "Fascinating reading . . . often more sympathetic to our life experiences and common sense than some interpretations I've seen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystery of Shakespeare's Sonnets: An Attempted Elucidation The following chapters are mainly reproduced from articles contributed to the New Century Review. They are a modest, but, I trust, not wholly unworthy addition to the literature which in course of years has gathered about Shakespeare's Sonnets. The only merit I claim for my attempted solution of the problem they present is that I cast no aspersion upon the character of the poet, and do not impute personal offence and personal dishonour to him in order to create a basis for a theory. At a time when the traducing of our greatest poet is not, seemingly, altogether unwelcome or unpopular, and when even those who have a perfect faith in his identity do not hesitate to cast a slur upon him, or ascribe to him odious sins for which history supplies no warrant, my effort at vindication may escape contempt, though it may fail to convince. No student of Shakespeare claims that the poet was a perfect man, that he lived the life of a saint, or that he always maintained his own ideal standard. But this does not justify us in wantonly and gratuitously adding new and purely imaginary vices to the list, even if by so doing it were possible to strain an extra meaning from a few obscure stanzas.
