Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some people keep diaries that merely record the forgettable tidbits of their daily life. Dorothy Rose Nolte Hughes had one of those. But after her passing, her cherished granddaughter Cherry found another one that proved to be the tell-it-like-it-really-is version. It revealed family secrets that may have otherwise been buried forever; the romantic conspiracies of two generations. Granny's spunk shined radiantly through each page. She'd turned some colorful phrases; earthy to be sure, and perhaps for some, even blushworthy. For Cherry and husband Gene, who with their six Doxie kids had spent their every day with Granny during her physically- challenging last months, this newfound treasure was delightfully funny. And deeply endearing. They discovered the true power of fairy tales; like those that had transported her to happier places and happier times during her somber last days. But the fairy tale that was Cherry's last gift to her grandmother, was the best one yet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early in the seventeenth century, Northeast Asian politics hung in a delicate balance among the Chosŏn dynasty in Korea, the Ming in China, and the Manchu. When a Chosŏn faction realigned Korea with the Ming, the Manchu attacked in 1627 and again a decade later, shattering the Chosŏn-Ming alliance and forcing Korea to support the newly founded Qing dynasty. The Korean scholar-official Na Man’gap (1592–1642) recorded the second Manchu invasion in his Diary of 1636, the only first-person account chronicling the dramatic Korean resistance to the attack. Partly composed as a narrative of quotidian events during the siege of Namhan Mountain Fortress, where Na sought refuge with the king and other officials, the diary recounts Korean opposition to Manchu and Mongol forces and the eventual surrender. Na describes military campaigns along the northern and western regions of the country, the capture of the royal family, and the Manchu treatment of prisoners, offering insights into debates about Confucian loyalty and the conduct of women that took place in the war’s aftermath. His work sheds light on such issues as Confucian statecraft, military decision making, and ethnic interpretations of identity in the seventeenth century. Translated from literary Chinese into English for the first time, the diary illuminates a traumatic moment for early modern Korean politics and society. George Kallander’s critical introduction and extensive annotations place The Diary of 1636 in its historical, political, and military context, highlighting the importance of this text for students and scholars of Chinese and East Asian as well as Korean history.

Book excerpt: John Steinbeck wrote The Grapes of Wrath during an astonishing burst of activity between June and October of 1938. Throughout the time he was creating his greatest work, Steinbeck faithfully kept a journal revealing his arduous journey toward its completion. The journal, like the novel it chronicles, tells a tale of dramatic proportions—of dogged determination and inspiration, yet also of paranoia, self-doubt, and obstacles. It records in intimate detail the conception and genesis of The Grapes of Wrath and its huge though controversial success. It is a unique and penetrating portrait of an emblematic American writer creating an essential American masterpiece.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Diary is the second collection in English of the groundbreaking and profoundly influential work of one of the best-known and provocative theorists of autobiography and diary. Ranging from the diary’s historical origins to its pervasive presence on the Internet, from the spiritual journey of the sixteenth century to the diary of Anne Frank, and from the materials and methods of diary writing to the question of how diaries end, these essays display Philippe Lejeune’s expertise, eloquence, passion, and humor as a commentator on the functions, practices, and significance of keeping or reading a diary. Lejeune is a leading European critic and theorist of diary and autobiography. His landmark essay, "The Autobiographical Pact," has shaped life writing studies for more than thirty years, and his many books and essays have repeatedly opened up new vistas for scholarship. As Michael Riffaterre notes, "Lejeune’s work on autobiography is the most original, powerful, effective approach to a difficult subject. . . . His style is very personal, lively. It grabs the reader as scholarship rarely does. Lejeune’s erudition and methodology are impeccable." Two substantial introductory essays by Jeremy Popkin and Julie Rak place Lejeune’s work within its critical and theoretical traditions and comment on his central importance within the fields of life writing, literary genetic studies, and cultural studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anne Frank's diary is one of the most recognised and widely read books of the Second World War. Hundreds of thousands of people visit the Anne Frank House on the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam each year to see the annexe where Anne and her family hid from the occupying forces, before eventually being deported to Auschwitz in 1944. Only Anne's father, Otto, survived the Holocaust. Anne Frank: The Collected Works includes each of the versions of Anne's world-famous diary including the 'A' and 'B' diaries now in continuous, readable form, and the definitive text ('D') edited by renowned translator and author Mirjam Pressler. For the first time readers have access to Anne's letters, personal reminiscences, daydreams, essays and notebook of favourite quotes. Also included are background essays by notable writers such as historian Gerhard Hirschfeld (University of Stuttgart) and Francine Prose (Bard College) on topics such as 'Anne Frank's Life', 'The History of the Frank Family' and 'The Publication History of Anne Frank's diary', as well as numerous photographs of the Franks and the other occupants of the annexe. An essential book for scholars and general readers alike, The Collected Works brings together for the first time Anne Frank's complete writings, together with important images and documents. Supported by the Anne Frank Fonds in Basel, Switzerland, set up by Otto Frank to act as the guardian of Anne's work, this is a landmark publication marking the anniversary of 90 years since Anne's birth in 1929.

This book was released on 1987 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eloquent and provocative essay describes the emergence of a Virginia gentleman. Sent to England for an education, William Byrd II soon learned to emulate the ideals of English gentility. In 1704 the thirty-year-old Byrd inherited his father's estates in Virginia, but he lived in England for much of the next twenty-five years pursuing his political ambitions. Thwarted in his efforts to obtain either the position to which he aspired or a wealthy bride, Byrd finally faced personal and financial ruin. Only then did he come to be both literally and figuratively at home in Virginia. The story is told through Kenneth Lockridge's compelling reading of a seemingly intractable source: Byrd's secret diaries. Drawing upon psychohistory, social psychology, cultural anthropology, and literary criticism, Lockridge relates the narrative of a single life, of a person struggling for realization within the context of a Virginia aristocracy itself striving for a mature conception of its role. He captures the essence of what it was to become a Virginia gentleman, and the terrible price leading Virginians paid for the eventual success of their class. In the process, Lockridge demonstrates how a close reading of literary texts can reveal large historical themes. He explores the politics of the eighteenth-century colonial and imperial world and reveals the exact moment at which a matured colonial gentry seized the initiative from its British masters -- fifty years before the Revolution.
