As Jo investigates the mysterious occurrences, she suspects a dangerous alliance that aims to put her newspaper out of business. Determined to expose the truth, she makes a startling discovery. In a thrilling showdown, she unveils a web of deception and secrets, proving that her failures aren’t at all what they seem. In the present day, bookshop owner Olivia Crawford becomes entangled in a mystery when a team filming a ghost-hunting show arrives in town. As they delve deeper into the mystery, Olivia confronts treachery, manipulation, and a connection that spans present and past, ultimately unraveling a mystery that saves a man’s life. A gripping dual timeline historical mystery of redemption, friendship, and the courage to confront one's flaws while seeking the truth. “Absolutely fantastic. Kept me wondering what could possibly happen next. Intriguing all the way to the end. Superb.” “So well written, so captivating, so much passion and compassion. It left me feeling at peace after reading.” “This was my first Gilded Age-era book and wow this book is amazing! So many secret, cryptic codes and just all around crazy ending, I am for one hooked!” “What a perfect book for this time of the year. Vanessa Lind has become one of my favourite authors.” “If you love historical fiction with mystery and intrigue, I highly recommend this book.” “This series is so fun, and each book has shown a different side to the two main characters.” “If you enjoy a good historical mystery series you've got to check this one out! It's a fun, thrill filled ride with amazingly strong women at the helm.” “What a perfect book to read for the Halloween season!” “I definitely recommend the whole series!” “Satisfyingly spooky, but not TOO scary.” “The dual storylines continue to intrigue, pulling you into them and keeping you reading right through to the end.” “There were plenty of twists and turns, several of which I never saw coming. Book excerpt: When something goes bump in the night . . . it’s most likely a plumbing problem, or something equally mundane. But fake medium Eleanor Wilde is happy to investigate and cleanse your home of spectral presences—for a fee. Hey, it’s a living . . . Ellie has an ailing sister to care for, and working as a ghost hunter who doesn’t believe in ghosts helps cover the bills for both of them. When she’s lucky, it also pays for the occasional tropical vacation. Her brother doesn’t exactly approve, but Ellie figures she’s providing a service. On her latest job, though, she may be in for some genuine scares. The skeptical, reserved, and very rich Nicholas Hartford III has flown her all the way to his family’s ancestral estate in England—supposedly haunted by a phantom named Xavier. Nicholas thinks it’s all just as much a crock as Ellie’s business is, but the fact remains that something is causing the flashes of light, mysterious accidents, and other apparent pranks in the chilly, eerie castle. His mother is sure that Xavier is real, and he’s willing to employ Ellie if she can get to the bottom of it and put a stop to the nonsense. While the food and accommodations are somewhat disappointing (dorm-room furniture? Really?), Ellie is finding it an adventure to get to know this eccentric family and their houseguests, and to poke around in the nearby village for clues. But when an actual dead body appears—and subsequently disappears—at Castle Hartford, she’ll have to apply her talent for trickery and psychological insight to solve a flesh-and-blood murder.

Book excerpt: Engaging, charming, and smart, The Séance Society by Michael Nethercott is a fresh take on the traditional mystery genre for readers who love original characters, witty dialogue, and a great whodunit. It's 1956, and Lee Plunkett has taken over the family business as a private investigator despite his reluctance to follow in his father's footsteps. When murder intrudes on a group of ghost seekers, Lee is asked to solve the case by a cop on the verge of retirement. At the urging of his perpetual fiancée Audrey, Lee enlists the help of Mr. O'Nelligan, a scholarly Irishman with a keen eye for solving mysteries. The duo is drawn into a murder investigation involving the "Spectricator," a machine designed to communicate with the dead. Soon, Plunkett and O'Nelligan are knee-deep in a suspect pool that includes a surly medium, a former speakeasy queen, a mysterious Spanish widow, and a whole slew of eccentric servants. "Nethercott's debut sparkles with a mix of W.B. Yeats and Elvis quotations, well-placed red herrings, and an endearing trio of protagonists."—Library Journal "This clever series opener offers a mid-century take on the traditional drawing-room mystery... There is a sweet charm to this mystery, ensuring that readers will want to see more from O'Nelligan and Plunkett."—Booklist "A classically styled Holmesian whodunit."—Publishers Weekly

Book excerpt: From its earliest days, America served as an arena for the revolutions in alternative spirituality that eventually swept the globe. Esoteric philosophies and personas—from Freemasonry to Spiritualism, from Madame H. P. Blavatsky to Edgar Cayce—dramatically altered the nation’s culture, politics, and religion. Yet the mystical roots of our identity are often ignored or overlooked. Opening a new window on the past, Occult America presents a dramatic, pioneering study of the esoteric undercurrents of our history and their profound impact across modern life.

Book excerpt: American photographer Shannon Taggart (born 1977) became aware of spiritualism as a teenager when her cousin received a message from a medium that revealed details about her grandfather's death. In 2001, while working as a photojournalist, she began photographing where that message was received--Lily Dale, New York, home to the world's largest spiritualist community, proceeding to other communities in, for example, Arthur Findlay College in the UK. Taggart expected to spend one summer figuring out the tricks of the spiritualist trade. Instead, spiritualism's mysterious processes, earnest practitioners and neglected photographic history became an inspiration. Her project evolved into an 18-year journey that has taken her around the world in search of "ectoplasm"-- the elusive substance that is said to be both spiritual and material. With Séance, Taggart offers a series of haunting photographs exploring spiritualist practices in the US, England and Europe. Supported with a commentary on her experiences, a foreword by Dan Aykroyd, creator of Ghostbusters and fourth-generation spiritualist, and illustrated essays from Andreas Fischer and Tony Oursler, Séance examines spiritualism's relationship with human celebrity and its connections with technology, and concludes with the debate over ectoplasm and how spiritualism can move forward in the 21st century.

Book excerpt: Author of the acclaimed Beginners Guide to Mediumship, Larry Dreller digs deeper into the role of mediums and the meaning of mediumship in our complex, rational, increasingly scientifically sophisticated world. Mediumship necessarily revolves around the, to some scary, but inevitable fact of death. In a broad sense, a medium is simply one who communicates with the spirits of the departed. There is ample evidence of life after death, the continuation of the soul, and other forms of life we don't understand. Yet modern science and technology have yet to explain (or explain away) that evidence. In Secrets of a Medium, which is an advanced guide to mediumship, Dreller explores death, the afterlife, and those realms beyond the mortal world in a readable, sensible manner, unclouded by vague jargon or dogmatic faith. He explains the range of psychic abilities and characteristics of mediums--the difference between psychics and channelers, the mental and physical abilities of mediums, what mediums believe, and typical settings for the work of a medium. On a practical side, he lists what is needed for a seance and other works, and how to prepare oneself mentally, physically, and spiritually for the work of a medium. He goes into some depth about what to expect when contact is made with the other side. More than just a guide to mediumship as a practice, Dreller provides a guide to life for the aspiring medium. A glossary of paranormal terms, an extensive bibliography, and a guide to the paranormal and mediumship in popular media make this an invaluable reference to aspiring and practicing mediums.

This new casebook reveals the secrets of the Winchester Mystery House, the giant Nazca drawings of Peru, the Shroud of Turin, the "Mothman" enigma, the Amityville Horror house, the vicious goatsucking El Chupacabras, and numerous other "unexplainable" paranormal phenomena. Nickell has traveled far and wide to solve cases, which include a weeping icon in Russia, the elusive Bigfoot-like "yowie" in Australia, the reputed power of a headless saint in Spain, and an "alien hybrid" in Germany. He has gone undercover—often in disguise—to reveal the tricks of those who pretend to talk to the dead, accompanied a Cajun guide into a Louisiana swamp in search of a fabled monster, and gained an audience with a voodoo queen. Superstar psychic medium John Edward, pet psychic Sonya Fitzpatrick, evangelist and healer Benny Hinn, and many other well-known figures have found themselves under Nickell's careful scrutiny. The Mystery Chronicles examines more than three dozen intriguing mysteries. Nickell uses a hands-on approach and the scientific method to steer between the extremes of mystery mongering and debunking. His investigative skills have won him both acclaim and controversy during his long career as one of the world's foremost paranormal investigators.

This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family Secrets and the Psychoanalysis of Narrative is the first book to explore the implications of the psychoanalytic theory of the phantom for the study of narrative literature. A phantom is formed when a shameful, unspeakable secret is unwittingly transmitted, through cryptic language and behavior, transgenerationally from one family member to another. The "haunted" individual to whom the "encrypted" secret is communicated becomes the unwitting medium for someone else's voice--and the result is speech and conduct that appear incongruous or obsessive in a variety of ways. Through close readings of texts by Conrad, Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, Balzac, James, and Poe, Esther Rashkin reveals how shameful secrets, concealed within the unspoken family histories of fictive characters, can be reconstructed from their linguistic traces and can be shown not only to drive the characters' speech and behavior but also to generate their narratives. First articulated by the French psychoanalysts Nicolas Abraham and Maria Torok, the theory of the phantom here represents a radical departure from Freudian, Lacanian, and other psychoanalytic approaches to literary interpretation. In Rashkin's hands, it also provides a response to structuralist and poststructuralist critiques of character analysis, an alternative to deconstructive strategies of reading, and a new vantage point from which to consider problems of intertextuality, "authorship," and the formation and origins of narrative.
