Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scientific Bases of Faith The present work was promised in the preface of my work on "Habit and Intelligence," which was published in the summer of 1869. When that preface was written, I hoped to publish the present work at the end of 1870: but it has been delayed by my feeling it a duty to take an active part in the re-organization of the Church of Ireland after its disestablishment: and I have not the power which I admire in some men of getting rapidly through a great quantity of work. The only words of explanation or defence which I design to prefix to this book concern the way in which I have treated the authority of the Holy Scriptures: for it is possible that some whom I may hope to influence might otherwise be repelled by what they may think inconsistent if not insincere language on that subject. As this work is not a treatise on the historical authorities of revelation, the preface is the best place to meet such objections. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Science, the Faith and Its Founder This volume grew out of a booklet of mine which was never regularly published, but for which there soon came to be a large demand from all parts of the country. It was at the suggestion, altogether unexpected, of G. P Putnam's Sons that I have expanded the monograph into a book. My purpose, as the reader will discover, has been to write a book in which the average man who is outside of Christian Science can find the things he wants to know about its theory and practice. If to my readers it may now and then appear that I unduly emphasise the defects of the system, I ask them to Observe that the good in Christian Science is the good in other religions and therefore requires no special emphasis, while the evil is distinctive and needs analysis and publicity to make it evident. There fore it is necessary to ask the reader to consider care fully each step in the argument, before coming to a conclusion. It is hoped the marginal notes suggest ing the line of thought in each paragraph, will prove an assistance. The reader is requested to read these notes over again at the close of each chapter, should there be a desire to recall clearly the fulness of the argument. This book is sent forth with the prayerful hope that it will prove helpful to many in confirming and establishing the reasonableness and the reality of the Christian faith. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith Works of Christian Science It is plain, therefore, that we have, in Science ana' Health, a sure guide to the doctrines of Christian Science; so far as any guide can be sure, which, claiming final inspiration, is yet under frequent revision, expurgation, and wholesale correction. The passages which I have put together are mostly from a 1903 edition. Christian Science is some times called Divine Science, or, simply, Science. That there may be no confusion, I have avoided the ordinary use of the word Science. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Faith in an Age of Science IN my student days I became deeply interested in the relations of science and religion, and in the tenta tive and provisional solution of the problems which the advance of science offers to religious thought. The sympathy I have felt with the perplexities of successive classes of students, in an experience of more than thirty years as a teacher of geology and the cognate sciences, has kept the subject ever before my mind. The thought of many years finds expression in the present volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It's an auspicious title for such a humble man, yet no one can deny that the grasp Morris has on science and faith issues is staggering. In this updated classic, Morris walks the reader through history "real history" by showing the absurdity of evolution. From a wide variety of sciences, including astronomy, biology, chemistry, physics, and geology, Morris presents clear evidence that the Bible gives us an astonishingly accurate record of the past, present, and future.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Science: As a Religious Belief and a Therapeutic Agent It is only fair to Christian Science and the author to say at the outset that I am not a member of the Christian Science fellowship; but I am a lover of fair play and of all things that make for a nobler and purer life and the true happiness of the people. Several years ago, I entertained much of the popular prejudice that is usually manifested toward new theories, discoveries and truths which run counter to the popular and generally accepted concepts of society. But I have always made it a rule of my life to try and understand a subject before attempting to criticise or to influence others either for or against it. I, therefore, made a personal study of the subject in order to be able to discuss it intelligently. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Substance of Faith: Allied With Science, a Catechism for Parents and Teachers Every one who has to do with children at the present day, directly or indirectly, must in some form or another have felt the difficulty of instructing them in the details of religious faith, without leaving them open to the assaults of doubt hereafter, when they encounter the results of scientific inquiry. Sometimes the old truths and the new truths seem to conflict; and though every one must be aware that such internecine warfare between truths can be an appearance only, the reconciliation is not easily perceived: nor is the task simplified by the hostile attitude adopted towards each other by some of the upholders of orthodox Christianity. It is sometimes said to be impossible for a teacher to educate a class subject to compulsory attendance, in a spirit of wealth, peace, and Godliness, without infringing the legitimate demands of somebody; but the difficulty is caused chiefly by sectarian animosity, which may take a variety of forms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Bases of Religious Belief: Delivered in Oxford and London in April and May, 1893 These elementary Lectures on the Philosophy of Reli gion have been delivered and published mainly in the hope that they may prove in some measure helpful to those persons who have ceased to see in an external, miraculously-attested Revelation a satisfactory founds tion for Religious Belief, and are seeking a rational basis for faith which shall be in harmony with that general theory of the cosmos to which the soundest science and philosophy of our time appear to lend the strongest support. In this respect, accordingly, the pre sent volume may, perhaps, be found of some service as an introduction to far more elaborate and important works, such as are Dr. Martineau's two treatises, A Study of Religion, and The Seat of Authority in Religion. Like its predecessor, the volume on Prayer, it has a distinct office to fulfil, an office that in the judgment of the editor is of immense importance. For between the professor's lecture-room and the preacher's study there is a great gulf fixed. In the lecture-room the lectures on systematic theology are laboriously entered into notebooks, which are useful for the exit examinations. But when the active work of the ministry begins, and so many sermons have to be prepared every week, the cupboard into which those notebooks have been stowed away is left undisturbed. The preacher begins to Spin his sermons out of his own brains, with the assistance of such popular books as happen to be at his hand.
