Book excerpt: An in-depth investigation into career-related programmes in American secondary schools and two-year further education colleges is given in this book. In addition to reviewing evidence on the effectiveness of vocational coursework, the authors analyse programmes involving students who study and work simultaneously, including co-operative education, youth apprenticeship and school-based enterprise.; Chapters deal with the problems encountered in the school-to-work transition: the preparation necessary not only for this transition but for changes encountered when jobs end abruptly, and issues covered include combining school-based and work-based learning and teaching and linking secondary with post- secondary education. Research on programmes involving students simultaneously working and at school, including non-school-supervised employment is also covered, as is co-operative education, which places students in jobs related to their fields of study. The traditional elements of post-school education and training are discussed together with an investigation into newer approaches including career academics and career magnet schools and programmes bridging secondary and post secondary education. Additionally, selected studies of programmes for out- of-school youth are reviewed.; To conclude, the authors consider new school-to-work systems and whether specially designed programmes for the "non-college-bound" students would be stigmatised as second best, or if an alternative programme could maintain an option for students to attend four year colleges and universities, the latter making the design and operation of school-to-work systems more difficult. Of interest to administrators, teachers, policy makers, analysts and employers, the findings in this book will shed light on the viability of new school-to- work initiatives currently being implemented in the UK, Europe and USA.

Book excerpt: Use of administrative databases has enabled higher education coordinating boards to assess the post-college earnings of students who attend community colleges. Some states have developed comprehensive methodologies for tracking the economic success of students in a variety of fields. Not only educators, but also legislators and the public, have begun to focus more attention on employment data as a performance measure for community colleges. This issue addresses the growing debate surrounding the use of such databases and presents case studies from individual institutions. The chapters discuss various state initiatives that look at student outcomes and institutional accountability efforts and they raise a number of questions. Is there a broad movement to connect accountability and outcome measures with funding? Would a national definition of economic benefit be helpful? How would economic benefit be measured? These are some of the themes addressed in this volume. This is the 104th issue of the Jossey-Bass seriesNew Directions for Community Colleges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longitudinal student tracking systems now serve a multitude of masters. Growing accountability demands from states, accreditors, and the federal government prominently feature such measures as persistence and graduate rates and time-to-degree. At the same time, resource shortfalls are driving institutions and state higher education systems to examine their operations more carefully in order to achieve greater coherence and efficiency; understanding and monitoring student flow is a prominent part of this effort. In light of these developments, student tracking has come of age. This volume of New Directions for Institutional Research describes important changes in the requirements for student tracking data bases and examines the expanding technical possibilities provided by statewide administrative data bases and by the availability of greatly enhanced data-manipulation and statistical tools for constructing and analyzing longitudinal data files. This is the 87th issue of the quarterly journal New Directions for Institutional Research. For more information on the series, please see the Journals and Periodicals page.

The universe of students is confined to those who attended a four-year college at any time, thus including students who started out in other types of institutions, particularly community colleges.

Based on the philosophy that inclusion is good for all children, "Successful Inclusion" moves beyond the notion of 'collaboration' to placing the primary responsibility for successful inclusion on the general education teacher and school administrators, not special education teachers. It provides numerous practical tools that help readers examine their own attitudes and beliefs about inclusion, and provides tools they can use in teaching to apply inclusion principles as well as strategies to overcome the barriers to inclusion. Presents an overview. Analyzes different perspectives on inclusion. Includes a ten step practical process. Contains data on the effectiveness of inclusion. Discusses the legal requirements for parent involvement. Introduces readers to the range of inclusion placement options. For readers with an interest in inclusion.
