Book Synopsis Harmony of Religions by : Thomas Manninezhath
Download or read book Harmony of Religions written by Thomas Manninezhath and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1993 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work is an in-depth study of Tayumanavar, a seventeenth century poet-philosopher, mystic and saint of Tamil Nadu. His profoundly philosophical humns were the poet`s creative response to the contesting creeds of his time, reflecting his own intimate religious and mystical experience of God, Siva (Sivanubhava). The present study of Vedanta Siddhanta Samarasam as God-experienced by Dr. Thomas Manninezhath will no doubt, awaken a new interest in the hymns of Tayumanavar and the legacy of religious experience they bequeath to us. Religious experience (anubhava), supported by reason and enriched by reflection, has to be the meeting ground for the followers of World Religions today. It is fascinating to see how Tayumanavar sought to bring about the harmony of two opposed traditions through a re-reading of his own tradition and a re-interpretation of the scholastic Advaita in favour of a more religiously inspiring popular Advaita. The work illustrates how many of our contemporary concerns enshrined in such concepts as Comparative Religion, Ecumenism Religious Dialogue etc. were also a concern within the `household` of Hinduism even as early as seventeenth century A.D. The author`s interpretation of Vedanta Siddhanta Samarasam of Tayumanavar offers a unique basis for religious tolerance and co-existence even in our present-day context of plurality of religions and creeds. That, indeed, speaks volumes for the actuality and relevance of the work.

Book Synopsis Material Devotion in a South Indian Poetic World by : Leah Elizabeth Comeau
Download or read book Material Devotion in a South Indian Poetic World written by Leah Elizabeth Comeau and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-03-19 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Material Devotion in a South Indian Poetic World contributes new methods for the study and interpretation of material religion found within literary landscapes. The poets of Hindu devotion are known for their intimate celebration of deities, and while verses over a thousand years old are still treasured, translated, and performed, little attention has been paid to the evocative sensorial worlds referenced by these literary compositions. This book offers a material interpretation of an understudied poem that defined an entire genre of South Asian literature -Tirukkovaiyar-the 9th-century Tamil poem dedicated to Shiva. The poetry of Tamil South India invites travel across real and imagined geography, naming royal patrons, ancient temple towns, and natural landscapes. Leah Elizabeth Comeau locates the materiality of devotion to Shiva in a world unique to the South Indian vernacular and yet captivating to audiences across time, place, and tradition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a number of problems connected with the study and teaching of any Oriental literature in general and of Tamil literature specifically which have to date been mostly ignored, although they are indispensable for solid knowledge and correct interpretation and understanding of the literature in question. These include problems of authenticity and authorship, of transmission and tradition, writing tools and materials, of relationship of orality to literacy, of Sanskrit to Tamil, the prehistory of Tamil written literature, the numerous texts that have been lost, scholarly lineages and the rediscovery of ancient Tamil literature etc. The book deals with all these problems as well as with some specific Tamil cultural phenomena such as the concept of "threefold Tamil" or the relationship of literature ('marked') to grammar ('marker'), with the derivation of the term "Tamil" and with the history of Tamil literary historiography. It will be indispensable as an introduction to the study of the more than 2000 years of Tamil literary history. By addressing questions which have thus far been almost completely neglected, it has also decisive impact on the interpretative comprehension of Tamil literature and on the teaching of this very rich heritage of verbal art.

Book Synopsis Indian Secularism and Religious Freedom by : Aruthuckal Varughese John
Download or read book Indian Secularism and Religious Freedom written by Aruthuckal Varughese John and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-10-31 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book intricately examines secularity in India, presenting it as a complex tapestry of social struggles which introduces assumptions not shared by traditional Hindu culture. These cross-pressures influence both societal and legal realms, affecting how secularism is implemented. The work suggests that these pressures originate from the doctrines that shape India's social fabric and culture. It investigates whether secularism inherently assumes specific theological or cultural doctrines, thus affecting its cultural manifestation. By focusing on the intersection of religious freedom with human rights and legislation, concerning the contentious issue of religious conversions, the book delves into these complexities. The Ghent school attempts to address these tensions by advocating for a Hindu interpretation of religious freedom. However, acknowledging the truth claims of all religious beliefs offers a better approach to mediating between the constitution and Hindu tradition. Additionally, it highlights how Christian converts have developed adaptive mechanisms that blend their faith with traditional Hindu culture. This synthesis of beliefs and practices, or hybrid lifestyles, may provide a potential path forward, reflecting a response to the experienced cross-pressures.

Download or read book Nation Work written by Timothy Brook and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2010-08-04 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As increasing attention is drawn to globalization, questions arise about the fate of "the nation," a political and social unit that for centuries has seemed the common-sense way to organize the world. In Nation Work, Timothy Brook and André Schmid draw together eight essays that use historical examples from Asian countries--China, India, Korea, and Japan--to enrich our understandings of the origin and growth of nations. Asia provides fertile ground for this inquiry, the volume argues, because in Asia the history of the modern nation has been inseparable from global influences in the form of Western imperialism. Yet, while the impetus for building a modern national identity may have come from the need to fashion a favorable place in a world system dominated by Western nations, those engaged in nationalist enterprises found their particular voices more often in relation to tensions within Asia than in relation to more generic tensions between Asia and the West. With topics ranging from public health measures in nineteenth-century Japan through textual scholarship of Tamil intellectuals, the willful division of Korea's history from China's, the development of China's cotton industry, and the meaning of "postnational-ism" for Chinese artists, the essays reveal the fascinating array of sites at which nation work can take place. This will be essential reading for historians and social scientists interested in Asia. Timothy Brook is Professor of History, Stanford University. André Schmid is Assistant Professor of East Asian Studies, University of Toronto.
