Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no question that in recent years, the case law, practice and legal environment in which international arbitration in England is practised have all evolved and adapted to a changing world and continue to do so. In this book, a diverse range of practitioners chart this development with detailed consideration of the challenges and opportunities for the future of international arbitration in England. The topics chosen often reflect and explore preoccupations of our times, including such aspects of arbitral practice as the following: challenges to arbitrators, with particular attention to the Supreme Court’s findings in Halliburton v. Chubb; virtual hearings; diversity in international arbitration; climate change arbitration; ‘green arbitration’ practices; developing jurisprudence regarding enjoining foreign states in English proceedings; recovery of in-house costs in English-seated international arbitrations; overlapping sanctions regimes and their application to arbitral disputes in England; and the role and future of third-party funding. The fact that the essays were all written during the COVID-19 pandemic is reflected in the procedural issues which form the focus of some chapters, reminding us that when it comes, change can come quickly. For this reason, the deeply informed insights in this volume, intended as they are to ensure the continued evolution and success of international arbitration in England, will prove of immeasurable value for any practitioner making submissions before an arbitral tribunal. Jurists, academics and students will gain invaluable perspectives on the future trajectory of the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixth edition of Public International Law continues the book’s accessible, student-friendly tradition with a writing style that is both conversational and easy to read. Uniquely both a textbook and a casebook, the facts of each case and the details of decisions are succinctly set out, followed by detailed commentary and, where appropriate, a brief explanation of subsequent events. Fully up to date with all recent developments, the sixth edition covers the major areas of public international law and examines the leading cases of the International Court of Justice and other international courts and tribunals, whilst paying attention to judgments of national courts, including the UK Supreme Court, the US Supreme Court, and courts of many other countries when they make challenging or novel contributions to international law. Features designed to support learning include highlighted key cases, introductory chapter overviews and concise outlines, and recommended further reading. New to this edition are study boxes which apply public international law to recent events and examine controversial legal issues in a constructive way, including the ongoing armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, and the judicial battle of Julian Assange. Diagrammatic aides-mémoires at the end of each chapter have also been updated to further summarise topics covered in that chapter. This book is an ideal learning tool for students of law or political science, practitioners, and legal advisors and provides a clear and straightforward overview for anyone with an interest in international law.

This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern slavery encompasses human trafficking, slavery, forced labour and domestic servitude. In 2012, the International Labour Organization estimated that there were 21 million victims of forced labour across the world. Our current understanding of the exact scale of the problem is limited. The only systematic means we have for collecting data is the National Referral Mechanism (NRM) to which potential victims of modern slavery are referred. 1,186 potential victims of modern slavery were referred in 2012 - a 25 per cent increase on the previous year. The Government will go forward in three ways: through legislation in this Parliament; through non-legislative action across the country; and through upstream work in source countries. The draft Modern Slavery Bill will: consolidate and simplify existing slavery and trafficking offences; increase the maximum sentence available to life imprisonment; introduce civil orders to restrict the activity of those who pose a risk and those convicted of slavery and trafficking offences; create a new Anti-Slavery Commissioner role to galvanise law enforcement's efforts to tackle modern slavery; and establish a legal duty to report potential victims of trafficking to the National Crime Agency (NCA). The Rt Hon Frank Field MP was invited to run a number of evidence sessions to gather information and views from a wide range of experts. His recommendations will be fully considered as the Bill and action plan are developed. The action plan will also set out how we will improve law enforcement action in source countries, and take steps towards scaling up reintegration programmes

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents the latest assessment of global trends in wildlife crime. It includes discussions on illicit rosewood, ivory, rhino horn, pangolin scales, live reptiles, tigers and other big cats, and European eel. The COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic has highlighted that wildlife crime is a threat not only to the environment and biodiversity, but also to human health, economic development and security. Zoonotic diseases - those caused by pathogens that spread from animals to humans - represent up to 75% of all emerging infectious diseases. Trafficked wild species and the resulting products offered for human consumption, by definition, escape any hygiene or sanitary control, and therefore pose even greater risks of infection.
