Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural School, Its Methods and Management Besides school management, the rural teacher needs to know better methods, especially in primary subjects. Realizing this deficiency, a few chapters in primary methods, by Miss Stone, have been added, which are adapted to the work of country schools. Out of an experience of many years as a teacher in rural, village and county high schools, and as a teacher of teachers, have the pages of this book been written; and it is offered to the public with the hope that it may add its mite to the improvement of rural schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching in Rural Schools The United States Census Bureau classifies as living under rural conditions all persons living in the open country and in towns and villages having less that 2500 inhabitants. On this basis, according to the census of 1910, 53.7 per cent of the population of the United States was classed as rural, and the figures probably have not changed materially since that date. In the last printed report of the United States Commissioner of Education it was stated that, during the preceding year, 58.4 per cent of the children enrolled in the public schools of the United States were enrolled in schools classified by the Census Bureau as rural, while of the 600,000 teachers employed, 60 per cent were employed in these rural communities. Approximately eighteen million children were enrolled in these same schools, and about 95 per cent of these were in the elementary grades. When we turn from a consideration of the United States as a whole to a consideration of the individual States, we find that in 34 out of the 48 States more than 50 per cent of the population was living, in 1910, under conditions classed as rural, and in 17 of the 48 States the number so living exceeded 75 per cent of the whole. In 11 States the number exceeded 80 percent of the whole. In the 17 States in which the population was more than 75 per cent rural, from 75 to 80 per cent of the teachers and children are working in rural schools. Still more, approximately 215,000 of the 600,000 teachers employed in all public schools in the United States are to-day working in one-teacher rural schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher: The School, and the Community IN preparing the following pages the author has had in mind the three-fold object of modern education: the training of the physical, the mental, and the moral nature of the child. The environment of school life should be in harmony with his unfolding nature and growing abilities, and it should also be a source of constant pleasure to him. The pupil who is absent from school should be con scious that he is missing something not enjoying a reprieve. To this end, a variety of suggestions, helps, and recreations are offered to make the study of the common branches more interesting. The chapters on nature study, the country school as a public health educator, and what to do with agriculture and home science may be most wel come to the rural teachers who have been struggling with such problems. Effort has been made to unify the work of the school and the home, and special consideration has been given to the school as a community center and as the stimulating source for clear thinking, good farming, and right living. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural Life and the Rural School This volume is addressed to the men and women who have at heart the interests of rural life and the rural school. I have tried to avoid deeply speculative theories on the one hand, and distressingly practical details on the other; and have addressed myself chiefly to the intelligent individual everywhere - to the farmer and his wife, to the teachers of rural schools, to the public spirited school boards, individually and collectively, and to the leaders of rural communities and of social centers generally. I have tried to avoid the two extremes which Guizot says are always to be shunned, viz.: that of the visionary theorist and that of the libertine practician. The former is analogous to a blank cartridge, and the latter to the mire of a swamp or the entangled underbrush of a thicket. The legs of one's theories (as Lincoln said of those of a man) should be long enough to reach the earth; and yet they must be free to move upon the solid ground of fact and experience. Details must always be left to the person who is to do the work, whether it be that of the teacher, of the farmer, or of the school officer. At first, they depended upon those residents of the country, mature and immature, who could show evidence of knowledge chiefly gained in country schools, sufficient to obtain a teacher's certificate. Later, when the high schools, with the aid of the state and because of a quickening of interest among the citizens of towns and cities, grew in numbers, and became more accessible to children of the rural districts, high school graduates sought their teaching apprenticeship in country schools.
