Why do God’s people suffer? In Galatians, Paul makes an argument from persecution for the authenticity of his gospel. While Paul does not offer an explicit theodicy in Galatians, his argument from persecution requires an implicit one. Paul’s theodicy can primarily be understood through his interpretation of earlier Scripture, especially the story of Isaac and Ishmael in Genesis. In Persecution and Cosmic Conflict, Joshua Caleb Hutchens examines the theme of persecution in Galatians and Paul’s theological context in earlier Scriptures and early Judaism. Hutchens argues that Paul sees persecution as a manifestation of the cosmic conflict between God in Christ and the present evil age. Paul argues for this by appealing to earlier Scripture in Genesis. Hutchens offers a biblical-theological reading of Genesis that makes sense of Paul’s usage of the book in Galatians.

Book excerpt: The new exodus is an enduring subject of dispute in Deutero-Isaiah research. For the last five decades scholars have raised arguments both for and against the presence of a so-called new exodus paradigm, debating the extent to which the exodus tradition influenced depictions of the homecoming of the exiles in Isaiah 40-55. In this thesis I concur that the new exodus is a significant paradigm in Isa 40-55, but I go on to argue that a creative transformation of the new exodus ensues in the course of reading Deutero-Isaiah. My study focuses on some unique traits of the homecoming theme in Isaiah 40-55 and sets out to demonstrate that the depiction of the homecoming in these chapters undergoes a significant shift from a new exodus to a pilgrimage paradigm. In the texts I examine, one encounters distinct journey types that are differently oriented and register separate horizons of experience shared by the audience. In the case of the pilgrimage paradigm, such characteristic features include an emphasis on arrival at a specific holy site, an atmosphere of worship, and the travellers' purification and inner transformation in approaching the divine presence. Some of the texts I will consider have been linked to a distinct compositional stage, the Great Isaiah redaction, understood to have imposed greater coherence to the larger Isaiah book through the addition of homecoming texts. This redactional view grounds the significance of some of the texts I consider within a larger editorial design rather than within the Deutero-Isaiah context. Withholding a dismissive attitude towards undeniable indications of distinct compositional stages, I nevertheless take a different approach. In the course of the study, I ascertain that the pilgrimage paradigm can be understood as a development of the literary context, bringing further expression to the themes of Zion's restoration and doxological renewal announced throughout Isa 40-55. I further argue for the significance of this pilgrimage paradigm to other issues of Isaiah interpretation including the placement of the fourth servant song and the role of servant-Israel among the nations.

Book excerpt: The Message of Isaiah 40-55 traces the argument of Isaiah 40-55 to show how the chapters bring a message of encouragement and challenge about God's intention to restore the Judean community, some of whose members are in exile in Babylon, others living in the city of Jerusalem that has lain devastated since it fell to the Babylonians in 587. The chapters hold before this community's eyes a vision of the nature of its God as the powerful creator and the loving restorer. In the course of following the argument, the reader becomes aware that the chapters have to deal with their audience's mysterious resistance to their message. It cannot give God the kind of response the message needs and deserves, nor can it fulfil the role as God's servant that is designed for it. God nevertheless remains committed to it. The prophet eventually becomes aware of a distinctive personal calling to embody that response, until the people are ready to do so. It is the prophet's willingness to do this (notwithstanding the suffering it brings) that embodies the kind of ministry that needs to be exercised to them so that they may be brought back to God and find a restoration of spirit, as well as a physical restoration.
