Book excerpt: The microstructural stability and mechanical behavior of the in-situ Co, Cr-(Cr, Co)7C3 composite and filamentary Ni-Mo and nichrome-tungsten composites have been characterized as a function of isothermal exposure and various regimes of thermal cycling. Properties examined were strength, toughness and resistance to fatigue crack propagation. Correlations were developed between microstructural change accompanying each mode of heat-treatment and the above properties. This provided the basis for the development of models for plastic flow and crack initiation/propagation in the two types of composite material which can account for the observed effect(s) of the heat-treatment imposed. Book excerpt: The objective of the program was to understand the role of the interface on the micromechanics of deformation of metal matrix composites. To this end, yielding, flow, and fracture behavior were correlated with the associated stress state and structural detail. Two specific types of composite material were included in the study; conventional fiber-reinforced aluminum-stainless steel, and unidirectionally solidified Al-Cu eutectic. The report covers studies on aluminum-stainless steel composites. Part 1: Correlation of uniaxial yielding and substructure in aluminum-stainless steel composites; Part 2: Fracture behavior of aluminum-stainless steel composites. (Author).

Book excerpt: The tensile creep behavior and associated substructural detail have been characterized in aluminum-stainless steel composites at ambient temperature. Volume fractions in the range 0 to 0.33 were tested under constant load conditions (in the range 1.0 to 4.0 times macroscopic yield stress) with the load applied parallel to the direction of reinforcement. In both unreinforced aluminum and the composites, steady state creep conditions are established in

Book excerpt: The deformation and fracture behavior of directionally solidified Al-CuAl2 composites was studied in compression at room temperature in terms of the associated dislocation structures and fracture detail. In the as-grown condition, the lamellar structure shows fault lines consisting of discrete sub-grain boundaries and terminal lamellae. A uniform cellular structure develops across the Al-rich lamellae (compression axis parallel to the plane of the lamellae) with cell dimensions

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanical properties of the interfaces in an Al2O3 fiber reinforced beta-2lS titanium have been evaluated by using fiber pushout tests. The Al2O3 fibers were coated with a refractory metal and Y2O3 which served as a diffusion barrier during the HIPing used to produce the metal matrix composites. By doing fiber pushout tests the interfacial fracture was found to occur at the interface between the refractory metal and the H2O3. The interfacial shear strength and interfacial frictional stress were measured to be 323 and 312 + or - 2 MPa, respectively. The interfacial frictional stress, which is due to asperity interlocking during the fiber sliding, was correlated to the surface roughness of the coated Al2O3 fiber obtained with the aid of an atomic force microscope. The measured surface roughness of 18.8 + or - 2.2 nm was related to the frictional stress through Hutchinson's model. The frictional coefficient between the Al2O3 fiber and the Ti matrix calculated to be 0.32 + or - 0.02.

Book excerpt: Metal Matrix Composites: Thermomechanical Behavior discusses metal matrix composites, elaborating on that consists of two phases—fiber as reinforcement and metal as matrix. This book focuses on polymer matrix composites, including topics in metal matrix composites ranging from processing to fracture mechanics. The three basic types of composite materials—dispersion-strengthened, particle-reinforced, and fiber (whisker)-reinforced, are also described in detail. Dispersion-strengthened is characterized by a microstructure consisting of an elemental matrix within which fine particles are uniformly dispersed, while particle-reinforced is indicated by dispersed particles of greater than 1.0 μm diameter with a volume fraction of 5 to 40%. Fiber (whisker)-reinforced provides a distinguishing microstructural feature of fiber-reinforced materials, such as that the reinforcing fiber has one long dimension, while the reinforcing particles of the other two types do not. This publication serves as a reference data book to students and researchers aiming to acquire knowledge of the thermomechanical behavior of metal matrix composites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study and application of composite materials are a truly interdisciplinary endeavour that has been enriched by contributions from chemistry, physics, materials science, mechanics and manufacturing engineering. The understanding of the interface (or interphase) in composites is the central point of this interdisciplinary effort. From the early development of composite materials of various nature, the optimization of the interface has been of major importance. While there are many reference books available on composite materials, few of them deal specifically with the science and mechanics of the interface of fiber reinforced composites. Further, many recent advances devoted solely to research in composite interfaces have been scattered in a variety of published literature and have yet to be assembled in a readily accessible form. To this end this book is an attempt to bring together recent developments in the field, both from the materials science and mechanics perspective, in a single convenient volume. The central theme of the book is tailoring the interface properties to optimise the mechanical peformance and structural integrity of composites with enhanced strength/stiffness and fracture toughness (or specific fracture resistance). It deals mainly with interfaces in advanced composites made from high performance fibers, such as glass, carbon, aramid, ultra high modulus polyethylene and some inorganic (e.g. B/W, A12O3, SiC) fibers, and matrix materials encompassing polymers, metals/alloys and ceramics. The book is intended to provide a comprehensive treatment of composite interfaces in such a way that it should be of interest to materials scientists, technologists and practising engineers, as well as graduate students and their supervisors in advanced composites. We hope that this book will also serve as a valuable source of reference to all those involved in the design and research of composite interfaces. The book contains eight chapters of discussions on microstructure-property relationships with underlying fundamental mechanics principles. In Chapter 1, an introduction is given to the nature and definition of interfaces in fiber reinforced composites. Chapter 2 is devoted to the mechanisms of adhesion which are specific to each fiber-matrix system, and the physio-chemical characterization of the interface with regard to the origin of adhesion. The experimental techniques that have been developed to assess the fiber-matrix interface bond quality on a microscopic scale are presented in Chapter 3, along with the techniques of measuring interlaminar/intralaminar strengths and fracture toughness using bulk composite laminates. The applicability and limitations associated with loading geometry and interpretation of test data are compared. Chapter 4 presents comprehensive theoretical analyses based on shear-lag models of the single fiber composite tests, with particular interest being placed on the interface debond process and the nature of the fiber-matrix interfacial bonding. Chapter 5 is devoted to reviewing current techniques of fiber surface treatments which have been devised to improve the bond strength and the fiber-matrix compatibility/stability during the manufacturing processes of composites. The micro-failure mechanisms and their associated theories of fracture toughness of composites are discussed in Chapter 6. The roles of the interface and its effects on the mechanical performance of fiber composites are addressed from several viewpoints. Recent research efforts to augment the transverse and interlaminar fracture toughness by means of controlled interfaces are presented in Chapters 7 and 8.
