Book excerpt: As many of the founding full-time community college faculty began to retire, colleges across the nation intensified their full-time faculty recruitment and retention efforts. They began to replace the retiring full-time faculty with the new generation faculty cohort. The purpose of this study was to understand the role that a comprehensive orientation program played in the socialization process of new community college faculty. Additionally, the study examined the choice of orientation tactics used to socialize the new faculty. Relying on the reported socialization experiences of seven full-time faculty members from six of the seven colleges that comprised a community college district, the study explored how an orientation program facilitated their adjustment process. Finally, the researcher sought to identify ways to improve full-time community college faculty socialization experience. Most of the faculty in this study, although having no specific training to teach at the community college, were able to build relationships outside their individual colleges, acquired new skills, and gained access to valuable district resources, as a result of their participation in a yearlong comprehensive orientation program. Three significant findings resulted from this study. The first major significant finding of this study was that the incorporation of a social apparatus, such as the "retreat" into an orientation program, facilitated group cohesion and identity among the new faculty. The social structure of the retreat provided new faculty with an opportunity to connect with one another at an emotional level. They were able to expand their social networks beyond their immediate colleges. A second significant finding was that faculty became more confident and comfortable in their teaching roles as a result of the skills they acquired following their completion of the comprehensive orientation program. The monthly sessions, which were held every 4th Friday provided the faculty the opportunity to acquire and develop new skills to effectively discharge their responsibilities. The third major finding of this study was that because faculty had access to district resources, to develop their skills, they became more closely tied to their institutions. Finally, recommendations are made to improve new faculty socialization experience during their adjustment process.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This research study investigated the perceptions and experiences of the socialization processes among early career foreign national tenure-accruing faculty in a Research I University, using the grounded research design. The findings revealed that the foreign national faculty appeared to shoulder the triad of tenure track responsibilities i.e., teaching, research, and service amidst unclear and unspoken expectations. However, coming from different cultural back grounds, including collectivist cultures at times foreign national faculty needed more personalized attention than is usually offered in the individualistic culture of the U.S. While they focused on their accomplishments, some of the faculty members paid little attention to the sociocultural requirements of their spouses, and developed relationship concerns. Unspoken and vague expectations about research further complicated faculty work and impeded the adjustment process. Very little research presently exists in this area. Although this study fills that gap in literature, a more concerted and focused socialization process, with clearer departmental expectations, and thoughtful institutional support is likely to ensure that multicultural faculty experience more productive, and caring office and home environments.

Book excerpt: This dissertation examines an understudied group according the American Council on Education: the tenure-track early career faculty (ECF). The focus is on the culturalization, socialization, academic culture, and emergent themes discerned from ten semi-structured interviews with tenure-track ECF. This qualitative bounded system case study was conducted in the context of a Midwestern Carnegie I Research Land-Grant Institution, an institution with emphasis on teaching, research, and service. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted and transcribed. From these, codes, categories, patterns, and themes were found. Additional documentation was also considered such as participants0́9 resumes and the faculty handbook, COE: Orientation to COE A Guide for Faculty 2008-2009. The themes included a reliance on socialization from the parent degree granting institution, and an overall request for balance between professional and personal life. In addition the ECFs need mentoring at their new institution in research, writing and publication, in professional identity, and socialization to tacit knowledge via cognitive apprenticeship. A recommendation is that there be a bi-directional conversation on socialization, rather than a top down approach.

The majority of instructors teaching college students are contingent faculty. This Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis study explored the perceptions and experiences of the career adaptability to teaching in the academe of six second-career contingent faculty at four-year public universities in the Northeast. The findings of the study showed that these accomplished professionals turned educators possessed the career adapt-abilities to successfully adapt to teaching in the academe. A metaphor of an Experienced Tour Guide was used to illustrate how the participants exhibited curiosity, concern, control, confidence and made significant contributions to their university, departments, and students. Participants did not exhibit a fifth career-adaptability of cooperation/commitment. Instead, they experienced a culture of competition that was exacerbated by a lack of time, resulting in roadblocks to their career adaptability. In addition, they noted several unexpected breakdowns in the higher education system that inhibited their ability to adapt to teaching in the academe such as a lack of support, recognition, status, power, and job security. Since the practice of using contingent faculty is commonplace and will continue, this study offered recommendations for both universities and department chairs to create a more inclusive, supportive culture for contingent faculty. Implications for practice include the development and implementation of leadership training programs for department chairs, adopting a new perspective and discourse on contingent faculty, implementing inclusive policies and practices, and providing opportunities for support, recognition, power, status, and job security for these accomplished professionals who now call themselves educators.
