Book excerpt: The effects of nickel and/or zinc addition on microstructural evolution in copper under electron irradiation have been investigated to study possible effects of solid transmutants generated in copper and copper alloys by fusion neutrons. Radiation-induced dislocation density increased with increasing nickel content but was independent of zinc content during 1 MeV electron irradiation. An enrichment of nickel and a depletion of zinc at grain boundaries occurred during irradiation. Measurements of temperature and damage rate dependences of saturated dislocation loop density showed that the interstitials are deeply trapped by nickel clusters forming loop nuclei in alloys containing nickel. It was shown that clusters of nickel as a solid transmutation product can affect strongly the dislocation evolution and related properties of copper and copper alloys by trapping interstitials from relatively initial period of fusion reactor operation. On the other hand, the effects of zinc production seemed to be small, althogh possible interactions with vacancies were suggested.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major objective of this research work was to study the influence of minor impurity elements present in nickel upon its oxidation behavior, specifically as regards the correlation between scale thickening and its concurrent microstructural evolution. Materials chosen for this work were Nickel 270 and a nickel of lower purity, Nickel 200. The Nickel 270 served as a standard of comparison for the oxidation behavior of Nickel 200. Initially the research activity was concentrated on a study of the microstructural evolution of the inner scale layer and the metal-oxide interface of Nickel 270. The results of this work combined with those of a previous research dealing with the outer scale layer formed a basis of comparison for the work on Nickel 200. A secondary study was made of the oxidation behavior of high purity copper in air at 800 C where the predominant oxide is CuO. The scale thickening and microstructural evolution of CuO formed under these conditions are similar to the oxidation behavior of Nickel 270.

Download or read book Comparison of Defect Cluster Accumulation and Pattern Formation in Irradiated Copper and Nickel written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study is to compare the contrasting behavior of defect cluster formation in neutron-irradiated copper and nickel specimens. Transmission electron microscopy was used to examine the density and spatial distribution of defect clusters produced in copper and nickel as the result of fission neutron irradiation to damage levels of 0.01 to 0.25 displacements per atom (dpa) at irradiation temperature between 50 and 230°C. A comparison with published results in the literature indicates that defect cluster wall formation occurs in nickel irradiated at 0.2 to 0.4 T{sub M} in a wide variety of irradiation spectra. Defect cluster wall formation apparently only occurs in copper during low temperature irradiation with electrons and light ions. These results are discussed in terms of the thermal spike model for energetic displacement cascades.
