They are providers of income and employment for producers and others working in, sometimes complex, value chains. They are a crucial asset and safety net for the poor, especially for women and pastoralist groups, and they provide an important source of nourishment for billions of rural and urban households. These socio-economic roles and others are increasing in importance as the sector grows because of increasing human populations, incomes and urbanisation rates. To provide these benefits, the sector uses a significant amount of land, water, biomass and other resources and emits a considerable quantity of greenhouse gases. There is concern on how to manage the sector's growth, so that these benefits can be attained at a lower environmental cost. Livestock and environment interactions in developing countries in are both positive and negative. Livestock production in the developing world occurs in a wide range of heterogeneous production systems. These can range from pastoral/grassland-based systems, which occupy most of the land area and have low human population densities, through mixed crop-livestock systems, usually in areas suitable both for arable and livestock production and where the bulk of rural human population lives, and intensive systems usually in peri-urban/urban areas. New diversification options and improved safety nets will also be essential when intensification is not the primary avenue for developing the livestock sector. These processes will need to be supported by agile and effective public and private institutions.

These farmers' opportunity may be threatened, however, by competition from larger-scale farms. This report assesses the potential threat, examining various forms of livestock production in Brazil, India, the Philippines, and Thailand. Findings show that the competitiveness of smallholder farms depends on the opportunity cost of family labor and farmers' ability to overcome barriers to the acquisition of production- and market-related information and assets. Pro-poor livestock development depends, therefore, on the strengthening of institutions that will help smallholders overcome the disproportionately high transaction costs in securing quality inputs and obtaining market recognition for quality outputs. These and other findings make this report a useful guide for researchers and others concerned with the opportunities and risks of smallholder livestock farming.

In the developed countries, this share amounts to half of total production and in developing countries for almost one-third. Worldwide, animal production from livestock (meat, dairy products, eggs, fiber and hides and skins) is the basis of livelihoods of billions of people. The management (care and welfare) of livestock is called animal husbandry. Animal husbandry as a term covers matters relating to livestock production and management, physiology of animals, reproduction, preservation and protection from disease, nutrition and feeding, housing, welfare and behaviour. The predominant production systems in the world range from extensive pastoral systems to intensive landless systems. The classification is justified by its usefulness in identifying livestock development possibilities. Systems at different stages on the development path face widely differing constraints on their further improvement. This book is particularly valuable in this context. The book has 17 chapters in five parts. The authors are drawn from 12 countries, many from the developing world. They are people with in-depth knowledge of the local situation and provide insights into the role, function and interdependence of people and their livestock.
