Book excerpt: Past research using different learning tasks has consistently shown different performance strategy patterns for field independent and dependent individuals. This research has shown that different computer environments affect how well individuals learn and that learning is dependent upon an individual's cognitive style (Morrison & Noble, 1987; MacGregor, Shapiro, & Niemiec; 1988). Other research has shown that there are individual differences (in cognitive ability, perceptual speed, and performance on a noun-pair task) in learning and executing computer tasks, specifically with regard to the type of interaction individuals choose to use (Schmidt-Nielsen & Ackerman, 1993). The present study is an attempt to correlate field dependence with performance strategies when using a specific task, the SigmaPlot graphing task. Field dependency, as measured by scores on the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT) (Witkin, 1971), was correlated with the mean time to complete a graph. Contrary to previous findings, field dependency was not correlated with performance. However, it was found that years of computer experience, perceptual speed, and cognitive reasoning ability were.

In our view, the field of memory development provides a particularly nice example of the progress that has been made so far. Since John Flavell's landmark symposium on "What Is Memory Development the Development of?" in 1971, the question of what develops has been addressed in different ways, yielding a rather complex pattern of findings. A closer look at current research outcomes reveals that ways of describing and explaining de velopmental changes in memory performance have changed considerably during the past 20 years. That is, while individual differences in the use of cognitive strategies were conceived of as the most important predictors of individual dif ferences in memory performance in the 1970s, the crucial role of knowledge has been demonstrated in research conducted in the 1980s. More recent studies have repeatedly emphasized that neither changes in strategies nor knowledge alone is sufficient to explain general patterns of memory development: Here the claim is that strategies ahd different forms of knowledge (e. g. , world knowl edge, domain knowledge, or metacognitive knowledge) interact in rather com plex ways to achieve successful memory performance. We believe that this claim can be generalized to different fields dealing with intelligent information processing.

Book excerpt: The specific goal of this research was to examine the role of individual differences in cognitive and non-cognitive abilities on individual and team performance in a real-time dynamic team-task environment. The theoretical goal of this research was to improve our understanding of how individual differences relate to team task performance, and to devise objective metrics of team performance. We completed an experiment that required administration of multiple ability tests, developing teams based on ability, and development of computer software to measure individual and team performance. In addition, we constructed an infrastructure of tools including experimental environment, data logging, and data extraction software that will support potential future efforts. Our findings suggest that cognitive and social abilities play a central role individual team member performance, and in team performance as a whole. Additional analyses of team structure suggest that the lowest-ability team member (the weakest link") determines team performance as a whole. Our findings have direct relevance to the selection, classification, and training of sailors who will serve as members of 21st Century Navy teams.
