It has been found that exposure of an Al-Zn-Mg alloy to water vapour saturagated air results in loss of ductility and subsequent formation of hydrogen bubbles at high energy sites such as grain boundaries. The rate of embrittlement depends upon the prior heat treatment of the alloy: thus for a given hydrogen level one microstructure may be brittle while another may still exhibit some ductility. Fractographic studies have indicated that the distribution of hydrogen within the alloy determines the mode of fracture. Part 2. Experimental techniques have been developed to study the stress corrosion of stainless steel. Preliminary characterisation of the material (302 grade stainless steel) is in progress. In both parts of the report proposed future studies are described.

Book excerpt: An investigation into the effect of exposure of Al-Zn-Mg alloys to water vapour has shown that hydrogen, produced by the reaction is absorbed by both the alloy grain boundaries and matrix. The amount of absorbed hydrogen depends on the local chemistry and the metal/Oxide interface and is influenced by alloying additions. Attainment of a critical concentration of dissolved hydrogen in the boundaries leads to brittle intergranular fracture on the subsequent application of stress. Attainment of a critical hydrogen concentration in the matrix leads to transgranular cleavage fracture. Depending upon the alloy composition and heat treatment bubbles of gaseous hydrogen can be formed at suitable sites within the alloys such as grain boundary particles. The formation of grain boundary bubbles reduces embrittlement by reducing the local concentration of dissolved hydrogen. It is proposed that the interaction of stress and environmental variables with the above criteria governs the environmental failure of Al-Zn-Mg alloys in aqueous and water vapour containing environments. It is suggested that such failures are hydrogen embrittlement dominated.

Book excerpt: Previous studies have been shown that high strength A1-Zn-Mg based alloys suffer environment assisted cracking. In the present work, room temperature constant strain rate (.0001/s - 000001/s) and constant load tensile tests on A1 6% Zn 3% Mg and copper and chromium containing variants were extended to specimens pre-exposed to a steam environment at 120 C and to specimens tested in air, distilled water and salt solution. The embrittlement increased at lower strain rates, higher water content, and in the presence of chloride ions. In all cases, atomic hydrogen absorbed into the grain boundaries and the grain matrix causes grain boundary decohesion and cleavage. The ability to trap atomic hydrogen as H2 bubbles improves the embrittlement resistance. It is believed that the addition of copper to the alloy increases the hydrogen trapping efficiency, hence embrittlement resistance whereas in the chromium containing alloy, the oxide is probably modified to inhibit hydrogen entry. The reaction of hydrogen with iron carbide to form methane is probably the most important chemical reaction involved in the attack on steel by hydrogen. Attack of steel at elevated temperatures and pressures is limited or prevented by the following measures: (1) use of steel alloyed with strong carbide-forming elements, (2) use of liners of resistant alloy steels, and (3) substitution of resistant nonferrous alloys.

Book excerpt: Tensile tests have been carried out on a high-purity A1-5.6 Zn-2.6 Mg alloy hydrogenated by exposure to moist air. Results indicate that internal hydrogen embrittlement occurs by the formation and rupture of a stress-induced hydride at the grain boundaries. The hydride, identified by electron diffraction as A1H3, is shown to be unstable in laboratory air, reverting to aluminum. The hydride phase was not detected in specimens failed by SCC, despite evidence that hydrogen is transported ahead of advancing stress-corrosion cracks, and this leads to the possibility that a basically different mechanism may be responsible for SCC in this alloy.
