The focus of this volume is on adolescent transitions in three domains: the peer system, the family system, and school and work contexts. Its goal is to highlight specific aspects of innovative research programs and initiatives, and look forward to future directions in the field. Because interest in adolescence has spanned the disciplines, this volume reflects a multidisciplinary perspective--presenting research and methods from life-span development, sociology, anthropology, and education to provide exemplars of the range of approaches used in understanding the processes and transitions of adolescent development. These exemplars encompass the breadth not only of the investigation of adolescence--from survey research on drug use to ethnographic studies of involvement in criminal activities--but also of individual differences in the experience of adolescent transitions--from the transition to college and work in White, middle-class youth to the work experiences of urban, African-American high school students. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. Book excerpt: Type 1 Diabetes (T1DM) is a life-long chronic illness often diagnosed during childhood or adolescence which requires individuals to adhere to a complex treatment regimen. Unfortunately, adherence is especially poor during adolescence. One factor which may influence adherence is treatment responsibility, or determining whether the parent or adolescent assumes treatment responsibility. Although there are no clear guidelines regarding when to transition responsibility, knowing whether the adolescent has the cognitive capacity or executive functions (EF) to successfully manage their treatment is essential. Parental stress has also been associated with treatment responsibility, suggesting that greater levels of parent responsibility are associated with greater levels of reported parental stress. However, most studies have failed to examine the effects of multiple forms of stress (i.e., general, parenting, and disease-related) on treatment responsibility. Further, little is known regarding how parent perception of adolescent general and disease related EF and various forms of parent stress are related to treatment responsibility. The present aimed to assess the contribution of various forms of stress and parent perception of general and diabetes related executive functioning on the transition of responsibility from parent to adolescent in adolescents with T1DM. The findings from the study underscore the role of parent reported diabetes distress as it relates to the transition of responsibility. Specifically, diabetes distress was a significant predictor of greater parent responsibility above and beyond the role of general and disease related executive functioning. Nonetheless, results suggest that parents transition greater responsibility to their adolescent when they perceive their adolescent to have a greater ability to remember tasks associated with their illness. General and perceived stress did not influence the transition of responsibility from parent to adolescent. The present study expanded previous research by examining the role that various forms of stress and parent perception of adolescent's executive function play in their decision to transition responsibility for diabetes management among adolescents with T1DM. Despite limitations within the present study, the findings suggest clinical implications and future directions for research. Specifically, future interventions should target decreasing parent diabetes distress, while also focusing interventions on improving adolescent's diabetes related memory for managing their disease. Future research should include a smaller age range and should be longitudinal in nature to better understand how the dynamic nature of the associations among various forms stress, executive functioning, and treatment responsibility may have an impact on treatment adherence and glycemic control.

Book excerpt: Healthy dietary practices are crucial to the management of type 1 diabetes (T1D), yet quality of diet deteriorates during adolescence with teenagers exhibiting the poorest dietary adherence to the diabetes regimen of all age groups (Johnson, 1992). Continued parental involvement, which has been found to promote adherence to the diabetes regimen, may also support healthful dietary practices in adolescents with T1D. The current study investigated the effect of parental monitoring of meals and snacks on the quality of diet and BMI of adolescents with T1D. Data from baseline assessments from an ongoing longitudinal randomized controlled trial promoting adherence among adolescents with T1D were analyzed. Two-hundred thirteen adolescents (105 females) with T1D and one parent participated. Parental monitoring and dietary intake were assessed through parent and child interviews, and parenting style was assessed through child report. Demographic and medical data were also collected. Structural equation modeling was used to test the hypotheses that quality of diet would mediate the relationship between parental monitoring and BMI and that parenting style would moderate these relationships. Results indicated that more frequent parental monitoring was associated with a lower BMI. However, the mediation hypothesis was not supported; parental monitoring was not associated with quality of diet. Furthermore, the dietary items seemed to measure quality of diet differently for boys and girls, so the models were tested separately by gender. Results indicated that parental monitoring was related to caloric intake for girls. The moderation hypothesis could not be tested because parenting style was not measured reliably in this sample. Implications for the measurement of dietary intake in adolescents are discussed. The importance of parental involvement in the dietary practices and BMI of youth with T1D is also explored.
