Book excerpt: Families who have a child on the autism spectrum generally experience more stress when compared to families who have typically developing children or children with another disorder. Some of these stressors include increased responsibilities, emotional distress, marital conflict , and financial hardships. This has raised questions for research ers about the psychological impact on the typically developing siblings (TDS) of such a stressful environment. R esearch in this area , thus far , has focused on the environmental and biological factors that have shown to be associated with either resiliency or maladaptive functioning in the sibling. The role of attachment has not been studied extensively and examination of this construct could provide insight on the development of poor psychological functioning. Therefore, this critical analysis aims to show how a secure attachment can serve as a protective factor from siblings developing b ehavioral and emotional problems. Included in this analysis are the implications of attachment in the object of study, as well as qualitative direction for future research.
