The contributors provide an increased understanding of the transformation of traditional community organizations into modern farmer-owned businesses. Download or read book State-Administered Rural Change written by Björn Gyllström and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-26 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1991, this book includes a detailed case study of Kenya’s co-operative movement – one of the largest in sub-Saharan Africa. Co-operatives have been given a major role in rural development strategies in both socialist and capitalist states. However in both context the results they have achieved have fallen short of expectations. The book focuses on specific elements of the institutional setting within which agricultural marketing co-operatives operate. Factors like land tenure, market regulations, co-operative legislation and direct development support are discussed and shown to have had dire effects on the managerial behaviour and social impact of the co-operative sector.

Book excerpt: The important role played by agricultural cooperatives in fostering rural development in advanced economies during and after the industrialization period is now well recognized. For this reason, the cooperative model has been seen as an effective and equitable way of improving conditions of smallholders in developing countries. Results, however, have been contradictory and, often, unsatisfying, generating the need of understanding the causes of this failure. The present paper, adopting a comparative, case-study approach, tries to evaluate if agricultural cooperatives are effectively advantaging smallholders compared with other business models. In particular, through the observation of some dairy and coffee societies in the Central province of Kenya, it examines if cooperative members are able to generate income in a more efficient way and if they experience a less inhomogeneous distribution of income. This book could be of particular interest for academics and professionals involved in the field of Cooperation and Development or for everyone else interested in the role that cooperative societies are playing in developing countries.
