Increasing evidence suggests that 5-HT pathways, reuptake site/transporter complex and 5-HT receptors represent a strategic distribution for learning and memory. A key question still remaining is whether 5-HT markers (e.g., receptors) are directly or indirectly contributing to the physiological and pharmacological basis of memory and its pathogenesis or, rather, if they represent protective or adaptable mechanisms. Certainly, Alzheimer´s disease (AD) is a very complex neuropsychiatric disorder, where memory becomes progressively dysfunctional resulting in amnesia and dementia, whereas forgetting is a physiological phenomenon occurring all the time as adaptive mechanism. As dysfunctional memory occurs in several neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, stroke, post-traumatic stress disorder. Hence, the aim of this call is collect recent and important findings related to information about serotonin and memory or 5-HT and learning or 5-HT and memory or serotonin and learning.

Book excerpt: Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, often cited as 5-HT) is one of the major excitatory neurotransmitter, and the serotonergic system is one of the best studied and understood transmitter systems. It is crucially involved in the organization of virtually all behaviours and in the regulation of emotion and mood. Alterations in the serotonergic system, induced by e.g. learning or pathological processes, underlie behavioural plasticity and changes in mood, which can finally results in abnormal behaviour and psychiatric conditions. Not surprisingly, the serotonergic system and its functional components appear to be targets for a multitude of pharmacological treatments - examples of very successful drugs targeting the serotoninergic system include Prozac and Zoloft. The last decades of research have not only fundamentally expanded our view on serotonin but also revealed in much more detail an astonishing complexity of this system, which comprises a multitude of receptors and signalling pathways. A detailed view on its role in basal, but also complex, behaviours emerged, and, was presented in a number of single review articles. Although much is known now, the serotonergic system is still a fast growing field of research contributing to our present understanding of the brains function during normal and disturbed behaviour. This handbook aims towards a detailed and comprehensive overview over the many facets of behavioural serotonin research. As such, it will provide the most up to date and thorough reading concerning the serotonergic systems control of behaviour and mood in animals and humans. Book excerpt: Within the CNS and in the periphery, serotonin (5-HT) participates in a number of functions including cognition, mood, sleep-wake rhythms, intestinal inflammation. 5-HT receptors can be classified into at least seven classes, designated 5-HT1 to 5-HT7. Since its identification, the 5-HT7 receptor has been the subject of intense research efforts, driven by its presence in functionally-relevant brain regions and in the gut. The availability of selective agonists and antagonists, in combination with genetically-modified mice lacking 5-HT7 receptors, has allowed so far a better understanding about the patho-physiological roles of this receptor. This Topic will review the state-of-the-art from studies conducted in laboratory (alive animals, tissues, cells) on this respect: 1) Emerging preclinical evidence supports a role for the 5-HT7 receptor in depression, since its pharmacological blockade or genetic inactivation induce an antidepressant-like behavioural profile. 2) In addition, agonists and/or antagonists of 5-HT7 receptors may improve memory or reverse amnesia, having pro-mnesic and/or anti-amnesic effects, with therapy potential in disease-related and/or age-related cognitive impairment. 3) When adolescent rats are treated with a 5-HT7 agonist, analysis at adulthood shows an improved exploratory motivation / attentional skill as well as increased strength of connectivity among components of a forebrain “limbic” loop. 4) In vitro and in vivo studies indicate that 5-HT7R modulates the neuronal morphology, excitability and plasticity, hence contributing to the establishment of brain connectivity during embryonic and early postnatal life.The role of neuro-plasticity and the links to neuro-inflammatory processes will also be addressed. Therapeutic potential of the beneficial effects triggered by 5-HT7 stimulation warrant future research.

Clearly this Section is delivering a useful resource to the scientific and medical research community! The scope of the Specialty Section Neuropharmacology is deliberately broad. We encourage submission of high quality and impactful papers in the field of neuropharmacology along the full length of the translational escalator; from cellular and molecular investigations to clinical trials. I believe this is a real strength of the Section and helps attract a diverse readership that builds the stakeholder network to promote further engagement of the Section with the research community. I have no doubt that this has contributed to the growth of the Section with submissions and accepted papers displaying 10-year (2009-2019) compound annual growth rates (CAGRs) of 58% and 78%, respectively. Vitaly, high quality, scientific rigour and impact are fundamental to a paper being accepted and this inevitably leads to a relatively high level of rejection, but the transparency of the review process means a fair decision is reached. Essential for the handling and considered review of submitted papers, the Specialty Section Neuropharmacology has a dynamic cohort of Associate Editors that have been selected carefully (81 at the time of writing) that represent the full spectrum of neuropharmacology as well as being widespread geographically around the globe. The Associate Editors are supported by nearly 500 Review Editors that ensures informed review – indeed the relatively open and interactive review process often adds considerably to the accepted version of the paper.
