Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis examines the morphological changes of non-tidal meandering rivers at the spatial scale of several meanders. With this purpose, a physics-based mathematical model, MIANDRAS, has been developed for the simulation of the medium-term to long-term evolution of meandering rivers. Application to several real rivers shows that MIANDRAS can properly simulate both equilibrium river bed topography and planimetric changes. Three models of different complexity can be obtained by applying different degrees of simplification to the equations. These models, along with experimental tests and field data, constitute the tools for several analyses. At conditions of initiation of meandering, it is found that river bends can migrate upstream and downstream. This depends on meander wave length and width-to-depth ratio, irrespective of whether the parameters are in the subresonant or the superresonant range.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is art criticism to be understood within an expanding artistic field? A look at its history and its manifestations within globalized conditions shows the variety of the genre, of the criteria and of the styles of writing. This reader is an attempt to bring a diverse range of art-critical voices and perspectives into conversation with each other, with texts from the 18th century to the present. The editors Beate Söntgen and Julia Voss have invited colleagues from various geographical and intellectual backgrounds to present and discuss the art critics of their choice, choosing one example from their respective bodies of work to comment upon. How have these writers approached art criticism? Which styles do they employ? What makes them extraordinary? What can we learn from their writings today, and why is it important in its contemporary context? BEATE SÖNTGEN (*1963) is professor of art history at Leuphana University Lüneburg. She studied art history, philosophy, and modern German literature in Marburg and Berlin. She is director of the DFG Research Training Group "Cultures of Critique: Forms, Media, Effects" and co-director of the program "PriMus - Doctoral Studies in Museums." JULIA VOSS (*1974) is an honorary professor at Leuphana University Lüneburg. She studied art history, modern German literature, and philosophy in Berlin and London. She is herself an art critic and journalist and was deputy head of the arts section of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

Book excerpt: Meandering Brush is a journey of the soul. It is a marriage of beautiful landscapes and verses that express emotions in all their myriad hues. The soulful paintings and poignant verses tell the story of many hearts. A story of love in all its hues. Soul heals with the stimulus it receives from the 5 senses. Sight is one of them. Aligned with the concept of “healing the soul”, these soul landscapes and verses spread the powerful and healing energy of colours and elements of nature through art. This is a one of its kind coffee table book exhibit of artwork and poetry. The book offers a collection of beautiful paintings under the theme of ‘Soul Landscapes” that bring the healing energy of nature and colours into your environment. And the soulful poems give wings to the heart. Art mirrors life. And life is expressed through art. Meandering Brush, through its winding forests and colours, woven by the artist’s brush, make so many feelings come alive. As the writer-artist Nehab says, “Regrets there are none. It is just a winter mood. Wine is passion red. Sky is stormy blue.” Absorb the power of emotions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent progress in research, teaching and communication has arisen from the use of new tools in visualization. To be fruitful, visualization needs precision and beauty. This book is a source of mathematical illustrations by mathematicians as well as artists. It offers examples in many basic mathematical fields including polyhedra theory, group theory, solving polynomial equations, dynamical systems and differential topology. For a long time, arts, architecture, music and painting have been the source of new developments in mathematics. And vice versa, artists have often found new techniques, themes and inspiration within mathematics. Here, while mathematicians provide mathematical tools for the analysis of musical creations, the contributions from sculptors emphasize the role of mathematics in their work.

Book excerpt: Meandering along the Teesta is a travelogue of real experiences and adventures of a group of four friends, who roam the mountains, valleys and alpine meadows of Sikkim. The book brings to life the fantastic landscape that is known for its massive snowcapped peaks, deep river valleys, numerous waterfalls, beautiful alpine meadows, the rapids of the Teesta river, a mind-boggling range of Himalayan flowers, and above all, the beautiful people of Sikkim. The book tells the story more through images than with words. The stunning landscape of Sikkim has been brought to life in these poignant photographs. The story narrates the adventures and some misadventures of the four middle-aged friends, apart from providing a brief history of Sikkim – right from the settlement of ancient tribes to the establishment of democracy and the merging of Sikkim into the Indian Union. It also provides a well-planned guide for anybody interested in visiting Sikkim.

In The Myofascial System in Form and Movement, Lauri Nemetz invites readers into the rich dialogue around movement, delving into anatomy, concepts of space, and the many other disciplines that are taking interest in the myofascial universe. Nemetz uses insights from our spatial relationship with the world to examine the human body, giving voice to the ideas and work of leaders in this area and prompting readers to develop their own ideas, as well as offering application suggestions to discover in your own body or with others. With an extensive background in art history, myofascial movement, anatomical dissection and more, Nemetz uses her wealth of experience to weave together the many facets of this evolving area in a visually rich and thought-provoking book.

Book excerpt: Abby Phillips Metzger's book of personal stories recounts a forgotten Oregon river, the Willamette, as it was before white settlement. Once a rich network of channels and sloughs, the Willamette today bears the scars of development and degradation. Yet, through canoe trips and intimate explorations of the river, Metzger discovers glints of resiliency: a beaver trolling through a slough, native fish in quiet backwaters, and strong currents that carry undertones of the wild Willamette. Together with tales from farmers and scientists alike, these experiences lead Metzger to ask whether something scarred can fully heal, and whether a disjointed river can be whole again. A story of re-discovery as told by a learner, Meander Scars will appeal to readers of literary nonfiction, river advocates, naturalists, and outdoor enthusiasts interested in sustaining healthy river systems for themselves, their children, and beyond.
