Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twins present special problems for the study of lateralisation, both psychological and biological. Central to both areas is the common observation that identical (monozygotic) twins can differ in their laterality. In the case of hand preference, this is most obvious in the one in five twin pairs where one is right-handed and the other left-handed. A similar problem can be found morphologically, not only in normal anatomical traits, such as hair whorls, which can be in opposite direction, but also in the rare condition of conjoined twins, where it is frequently the case that one twin has its heart and viscera in the normal orientation (situs solitus) and the other is mirror reversed (situs inversus). This special issue of Laterality brings together papers on these different aspects of twinning. Two of the papers are biological, one providing a detailed analysis of the laterality of artificially conjoined twins created by fusing two different species of newt, and the other overviewing the recent developments in understanding the molecular biology of visceral lateralisation in relation to twinning. The other papers concern aspects of cerebral lateralisation in twins, one providing a much needed meta-analysis and critical overview of the twin literature, another providing detailed data from a large study of handedness in twins, a third asking about the almost neglected question of footedness, earedness and eyedness in twins, and the fourth looking at lateralised cognitive processing. Between them these papers extend the literature on lateralisation in twins, and reinforce the need to consider the lateralisation of twins from biological, neurological and psychological perspectives.

Book excerpt: Although fertility drugs are increasing the incidence of twin births, conjoined twins remain rare at about 1 in 75,000 births. Nonetheless, they present a unique opportunity to learn about human development, as well as a challenge to medical professionals. In Conjoined Twins, Rowena Spencer, M.D., provides a comprehensive guide that thoroughly reviews the past century's literature on the subject and develops her theory of how these cases occur. After introductory chapters on history and embryology, the book presents a separate chapter for each of the eight main types of conjoined twins. Detailed descriptions of conjoined twins are accompanied by information valuable in planning surgical treatment, as well as extensive tables summarizing the available data on each type. Conjoined triplets and unusual conjoined twins receive attention in the final two chapters. Including line illustrations and photographs, this encyclopedic book about a complex subject will be a valuable reference for the many professionals who evaluate, treat, and study conjoined twins.

Book excerpt: Chirality is a fundamental, persistent, but often overlooked feature of all living organisms on the molecular level as well as on the macroscopic scale. The high degree of preference for only one of two possible mirror image forms in Nature, often called biological homochirality is a puzzling, and not yet fully understood, phenomenon. This book covers biological homochirality from an interdisciplinary approach - contributions range from synthetic chemists, theoretical topologists and physicists, from palaeontologists and biologists to space scientists and representatives of the pharmaceutical and materials industries. Topics covered include - theory of biochirality, origins of biochirality, autocatalysis with amplification of chirality, macroscopic (present) biochirality, fossil records of chiral organisms - paleochirality, extraterrestrial origin of chirality, exceptions to the rule of biological homochirality, D-amino acids, chemical transfer of chirality, PV effects, and polarised radiation chemistry.

Book excerpt: Following on from the success of their previous standard textbook on Multiple Pregnancy, the authors have refocused their attention on prenatal assessment in multiple pregnancy and come up with condensed and revised material in a free-standing text. Multiple pregnancies are associated with higher levels of morbidity and fetal distress, and so effective and rapid diagnosis of problems is paramount. Those clinicians who would not have a practical application for all the aspects covered comprehensively in the earlier work will find this volume a clinically orientated and extremely useful addition to their working library.
