Book excerpt: Despite Africa's rich biodiversity and the importance of its ecosystem services, it has relatively few collaborative, network-based studies that examine the ecological impacts of climate change. This book marks the beginning of such a collaboration. It covers ecological information that spans across five countries in the Albertine Rift region, reflects over 50 years of research, and includes contributions from 65 researchers who represent 44 organizations at work in 11 sites. It provides invaluable information about past and current trends in the status of species, ecosystems and associated threats, as well as recommendations for interventions.

Dylan Townsend didn’t expect to spend his twenty-second birthday on an alien moon in the Andromeda galaxy along with Isaac Barret, and Dr. Kate Minter. They have no idea how they were transported from Earth to an alien world and then put in quarantine. They’ve lost hope of being rescued and have resigned themselves to spending the rest of their lives on the moon. The Systral Empire, which captured the humans, has a bigger issue to deal with. A star entity orbits their sun and is growing, blocking out all sunlight. All attempts to remove it have failed. This would impact the moon the humans are on first. Another concern is that portals are opening on Varlon, their home world, and depositing strange aliens. Enter Evaran and M, two cosmic beings who travel through space, time, and beyond to help those in need. They, along with the Systrals and humans, will have their hands full with all the problems and deeper threats that have yet to reveal themselves. And the Systral Empire’s very existence is at stake.

Book excerpt: In his highly anticipated third book, “ Healing the Rift A Physician’s Insight into Medical Negligence – Past, Present, and Paths to Progress,” esteemed author and Senior Consulting Physician, Dr. Yogesh Gupta, goes beyond the surface to explore the historical roots of contemporary healthcare challenges in India. Delving deep into the origins of problems imported from the USA, which were later adopted by India, Dr. Gupta presents a meticulous analysis of the factors that have strained the patient-doctor relationship. Having previously shared his insights in “”COVID Diaries: Virus vs We”” and “”We Learn as We Grow,”” Dr. Gupta brings a wealth of wisdom to his latest work. Here, he not only examines the historical backdrop of medical negligence but also shines a critical light on the shortcomings of the present legal system in adjudicating the intricate nuances of medical practice. In a bold departure from conventional thinking, Dr. Yogesh Gupta argues that the current punitive model and the lengthy, tedious legal processes fail to deliver justice to either the patient or the doctor. Firm in his belief that justice should be swift, fair, and restorative, Dr. Gupta proposes a new vision for addressing the complexities of medical negligence in India. His book is a manifesto for change, advocating for a system that prioritizes trust, ethics, and efficiency. “”Healing the Rift”” is not just a critique; it is a call to action. Dr. Gupta’s compelling narrative, enriched by historical insights and profound reflections, challenges the status quo and presents a roadmap for a healthcare system that serves both patients and doctors equitably. This book is essential reading for anyone seeking a transformative perspective on the future of healthcare in India.

Book excerpt: To safeguard the U.S. against animal disease, research has been conducted at the Plum Island Animal Disease Center (PIADC), off the coast of N.Y., on animal diseases not native to the U.S. PIADC is outdated and too limited to continue as the primary facility for this research. A plan to provide safe, secure, and state-of-the-art agriculture bio-containment labs for R&D of diagnostic capabilities and medical counter-measures for foreign animal and zoonotic diseases has been approved. A new facility will be constructed which would house high-containment labs able to handle the pathogens currently under investigation at PIADC, as well as others. Community concerns about safety and security are being voiced about NBAF. This is a print on demand report.

Each aspect to be discussed in the East African Rift System shall have its equivalent case study and readers interested in each rift of the world will find something connected or linked to his/her rift system of interest, be it a sub-chapter on earthquakes, geothermal energy models, etc. The East African Rift System: Geodynamics and Natural Resource Potentials also describes rifting models of all other known rifts (especially continental rifts) of the world such as the Basin and Range Province, Rio Grande (USA); Rhine Graben (France and Germany); the Tibetan Rohai (Tibet); the Shaanxi Bohai (China); Lake Baikal (Russia); North Island (Australia); and the Aegean Sea Rift (Turkey). Key aspects to be presented shall be: rift type, rift age, rift physical dimensions, geothermal gradient models, natural resources, and models of exploration. Connects the science of rift systems to their economic potentials using the East African Rift System as the prime example Includes discussions and case studies from rift systems around the world Features chapters dedicated to natural resources, such as mineral deposit types (Au, He, REE, U) and the basic principles of their exploration?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brand new edition of the definitive textbook on humankind’s impact on the Earth’s environment—now in full color This classic text explores the multitude of impacts that humans have had over time upon vegetation, animals, soils, water, landforms, and the atmosphere. It considers the ways in which climate changes and modifications in land cover may change the environment in coming decades. Thoroughly revised to cover the remarkable transformation in interest that humans are having in the environment, this book examines previously uncovered topics, such as rewilding, ecosystem services, techniques for study, novel and no analogue ecosystems, and more. It also presents the latest views on big themes such as human origins, the anthropocene, domestication, extinctions, and ecological invasions. Extensively re-written, Human Impact on the Natural Environment, Eighth Edition contains many new and updated statistical tables, figures, and references. It offers enlightening chapters that look at the past and present state of the world—examining our impact on the land itself and the creatures that inhabit it; the oceans, lakes, rivers and streams; and the climate and atmosphere. The book also takes a deep look at our future impact on the planet and its resources—our affect on the coastal environments, the cryosphere and the drylands, as well as the hydrological and geomorphological impacts. Fully updated to take account of recent advances in our understanding of global warming and other phenomena Offers current opinions on such topics as human origins, the anthropocene, domestication, extinctions, and ecological invasions Features a full-color presentation to allow for more and clearer photographs and diagrams Contains more international case studies than previous editions to balance UK examples Human Impact on the Natural Environment is essential reading for undergraduates in geography and environmental science, and for those who want a thorough, wide-ranging and balanced overview of the impacts of humans upon natural processes and systems from the Stone Age to the Anthropocene and who wish to understand the major environmental issues that concern the human race at the present time.

This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The availability and distribution of water resources in catchments are influenced by various natural and anthropogenic factors. Human-induced environmental changes are key factors controlling the hydrological flows of semi-arid catchments. Land degradation, water scarcity and inefficient utilization of available water resources continue to be important constraints for socio-economic development in the headwater catchments of the Nile river basin in particular over the Ethiopian Catchments. This research investigates the impact of landscape anthropogenic changes on the hydrological processes in the Upper Tekeze basin (A tributary of the Nile). The hydrology of the basin is investigated through analysis of hydro-climatic data, remote sensing techniques, new field measurements and parsimonious hydrological models. The empirical evidence provided in this book confirms that human-induced environmental changes can significantly change the hydrology of catchments, both in negative (degradation) and in positive (restoration) ways. This book also shows that rainfall-runoff relationships in semi-arid catchments are non-uniform and hence the application of hydrological models in such catchments need special attention. Moreover, parsimonious dynamic hydrological model improves our understanding of the hydrological response to dynamic environmental changes.
