Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revisers and the Greek Text of the New Testament This fifth edition of Beza, which thus becomes our starting-point, may be considered, in common 'with the other editions of the same learned editor, to have been for the most part a reproduction of the third edition of the famous French printer Robert Estienne (stephanus), which appeared in 1550, and which has been treated as the standard text of the Greek Testa ment in this country till very recent times. Both Stephanus and Beza had access to manuscripts, of which two or three at least1 were of considerable critical value, but of these neither editor made any' real or consistent use. The beautiful folio of 1550 at which we have now arrived exhibits indeed ln its margin a regular. Collection of various readings, but' they formed little more than the embroidery of a' handsome page - though it was an embroidery which' gave such offence to the doctors of the Sorbonne'2 that: the great printer thought it convenient to leave his native city that same year, and to spend the remaining nine years of his honourable life in practical exile at Geneva. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ: Revised From the Authorized Version With the Aid of Other Translations and Made Conformable to the Greek Text of J. J. Griesbach The Reviser's title-page records that it is a Layman who is answerable for the compilation of these pages. His character, as such, may not be held to entitle him to indulgence in venturing upon such a task without the usual qualifications of those to whom such pursuits are more especially a business; it may even expose him to the charge of presumption Let us however bear in mind that there are many bright examples which would tend to prove that the English Layman's pen has not been always ill or uselessly employed on subjects in which it must, at any rate, be owned that he has an interest fully equal to that of the divine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ: After the Authorized Version; Newly Compared With the Original Greek, and Revised IT is necessary to premise a few words regarding the view with which this Revision of the Authorized Version has been undertaken. It seemed to the Reviser, and to some others, that the time was ripe for an effort to be made to publish the English New Testament in a form more consonant to the now ascertained ancient Greek text, and with corrections of inadequate renderings. This had been already done in the case of the Gospel of St. John, the Epistles to the Romans, Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, and Colossians, by Five Cller'gymen, of whom the present Reviser was one. The fruit of their joint labours has been kindly placed by his colleagues at his disposal and those books appear, with the exception of a very few passages in which his own view differed from that of the majority, simply as a reprint from the former Revision. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Dispensation: The New Testament; Translated From the Greek The spelling of proper names is a problem of some difficulty, in View of the various and conflicting claims of the Hebrew, the Greek, the Latin, and the English languages. The familiar forms have been retained, in general, although these sometimes fail to do justice to the originals. The Greek text of Westcott and Hort has been followed in gen eral, but not exclusively. Use has been made of all the critical helps available, but none have been implicitly followed, the author having exercised his own judgment in deciding between different renderings of a Greek word, and between different read ings of the manuscripts. The intrinsic probabilities in favor of a given reading have sometimes prevailed, notwithstanding the fact that such reading is not found in the older copies, or is not sus tained by a majority of the known manuscripts. A comparatively late manuscript, though not accepted as one of the best, may be in the main a copy of one more ancient than the earliest we have, and may give the true reading in some such cases. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concordance to the Greek Testament: According to the d104s of Westcott and Hort, Tischendorf and the English Revisers On the other hand, it has not been felt to be always desirable to follow the peculiar spelling of wh. The work is a Concordance to the New Testament, not to this or that particular editor. Where, therefore, on the authority of one or two mss. Forms have been adopted in their edition which are not met with in ordinary Greek lexicons, either Classical or New Testament, or in other printed Greek texts, the usual spelling has been retained in 'order to avoid confusion. But in cases where WH and T agree, their joint authority has been accepted. In the form of the quotations themselves an attempt has been made to secure grammatical completeness, even at the cost of somewhat greater length. In the case of no book of the New Testament is it more essential to a true understanding of its language, that we should have a clear view of the circumstances under which it was composed, than in the case of 2 Corinthians. It is the most autobiographical of all St. Paul's letters, and it abounds in personal allusions, which it is dificult, at this distance of time, to appreciate, and of which some will probably always remain obscure. It glows with the heat of Iervid life, l and was evidently written under the influence of strong emotion. And, if we do not assign it to its true place in St. Paul's life, we are likely to miss a good deal of the force of its earnest and eager words. It is, therefore, desirable to enter into more detail as to the occasion of its composition than was necemry in the case of a treatise like the Epistle to the Romans, the argu ments of which are largely independent of the circumstances of the author at the time when it was written.
