Book Synopsis Rapid Growth and Relative Decline by : M. Setterfield
Download or read book Rapid Growth and Relative Decline written by M. Setterfield and published by Springer. This book was released on 1996-12-17 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do high rates of economic growth create conditions favourable to their own maintenance? Or can a period of high growth 'sow the seeds of its own destruction'? This book addresses these questions by conceiving growth and structural change as path dependent processes. Methodological, theoretical and empirical insights are combined in an extended model of cumulative causation, which shows how endogenously induced technological and institutional changes may cause the dynamics of a period of high growth to break down. This casts new light on the debate over Britain's economic decline.
Book Synopsis Changing European Identities by : Glynis Marie Breakwell
Download or read book Changing European Identities written by Glynis Marie Breakwell and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The political structure of Europe has changed and continues to do so. The changing allegiances of the popluations of Europe pose problems and challenges for social psychological theory. Changing European Identities explores these issues using social identity theory and alternative models such as alienation theory and representational identity theory. It provides a highly topical and relevant context for exploring the validity and limits of current theories. Providing a valuable new perspective on people's reactions to change in Europe, it will be useful for advanced scholars in psychology and other social and political sciences.
Book Synopsis Strangers at the Gates by : Sidney Tarrow
Download or read book Strangers at the Gates written by Sidney Tarrow and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-26 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the products of work carried out over four decades of research in Italy, France, and the United States, and in the intellectual territory between social movements, comparative politics, and historical sociology. Using a variety of methods ranging from statistical analysis to historical case studies to linguistic analysis, the book centers on historical catalogs of protest events and cycles of collective action. Sidney Tarrow places social movements in the broader arena of contentious politics, in relation to states, political parties, and other actors. From peasants and communists in 1960s Italy, to movements and politics in contemporary western polities, to the global justice movement in the new century, the book argues that contentious actors are neither outside of nor completely within politics, but rather they occupy the uncertain territory between total opposition and integration into policy.
Book Synopsis Working-Class Organization and the Return to Democracy in Spain by : Robert M. Fishman
Download or read book Working-Class Organization and the Return to Democracy in Spain written by Robert M. Fishman and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the death of Francisco Franco in 1975, the long repressed Spanish labor movement faced two challenges: to contribute to the transformation of the national political system, and to use newly achieved freedoms to build its own organizational presence. Focusing on areas of potential conflict between these two broad objectives, Robert Fishman here traces the development of the complex political role and organizational development of the Spanish workers' movement in the transition from dictatorship to democracy. Drawing on rich empirical data including interviews with 324 plant-level labor leaders, Fishman examines the interplay between various unions' efforts to organize labor and to deal with national politics. He shows how the workers' movement, long an advocate of a ruptura or clear break with the Francoist past, came to support a process of negotiated reform and mobilizational restraint. Labor leaders' belief in the legitimacy of the democratic state, Fishman demonstrates, can serve as a key predictor of their willingness to support negotiated wage restraint. In emphasizing the crucial role of plant-level labor leaders in national political processes, Fishman offers an innovative methodological approach to the analysis of the collective efforts of labor. Political scientists, sociologists, historians of labor movements, and observers of contemporary Western Europe and Latin America will read it with interest.
