Book excerpt: "A riveting feminist retelling, filled with excitement, imagination, magic, and just the right touch of darkness." -Madeline Miller, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Circe From acclaimed New York Times bestselling author Jessie Burton comes her debut middle-grade--a girl-forward fairy tale retelling of "The Twelve Dancing Princesses" about sisterhood, imagination, and bravery, lushly packaged and with beautiful full-color illustrations. For the twelve daughters of King Alberto, Queen Laurelia's death is a disaster beyond losing a mother. The king decides his daughters must be kept safe at all costs, and for the girls, those costs include their lessons, their possessions, and most importantly, their freedom. But the sisters, especially the eldest, Princess Frida, will not bend to this fate. She still has one possession her father cannot take: the power of her imagination. And so, with little but wits and ingenuity to rely on, Frida and her sisters begin their fight to be allowed to live on their own terms. The Restless Girls is a sparkling whirl of a fairy tale--one that doesn't need a prince to save the day, and instead is full of brave, resourceful, clever young women.

Book Synopsis The Restless Quest by : Julian Hartt
Download or read book The Restless Quest written by Julian Hartt and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-10-04 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Restless Quest' is a collection of essays by Julian N. Hartt. These essays came out of Dr. Hartt's teaching and ministerial experiences; most are the results of years of observation and reflection. Throughout them he applies a persistent and coherent position to a variety of theological topics. Dr. Hartt shows us that not all traditional Christian beliefs have been liquidated by secularist presumption or liberal construction. Because of his very lucid writing, it is not necessary to learn first what Barth, Tillich, Bultmann, or their disciples have said. He further illustrates that there are ways of doing theology in the context of American life and the American church that do not perpetuate the myth that all theological styles necessarily derive from Germany or Denmark. Julian N. Hartt writes: God's forgiveness is truly wonderful; he has everlastingly in view the renewal of a human resolution to walk ever in more Godly ways. Practice in this will not bring in the kingdom of God, no matter how inspired and unsparing the practice is. It will help, it will surely help, self and others to learn what that kingdom is all about. For as Christ is our pioneer and our warrant, that kingdom is the prize and joy of all desiring.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A core principle of modern science holds that a scientific explanation must not attribute will or agency to natural phenomena. The Restless Clock examines the origins and history of this, in particular as it applies to the science of living things. This is also the story of a tradition of radicals—dissenters who embraced the opposite view, that agency is an essential and ineradicable part of nature. Beginning with the church and courtly automata of early modern Europe, Jessica Riskin guides us through our thinking about the extent to which animals might be understood as mere machines. We encounter fantastic robots and cyborgs as well as a cast of scientific and philosophical luminaries, including Descartes and Leibnitz, Lamarck and Darwin, whose ideas gain new relevance in Riskin's hands. The book ends with a riveting discussion of how the dialectic continues in genetics, epigenetics, and evolutionary biology, where work continues to naturalize different forms of agency. The Restless Clock reveals the deeply buried roots of current debates in artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and evolutionary biology.
Book Synopsis Image of the Sea by : Howard F. Isham
Download or read book Image of the Sea written by Howard F. Isham and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the unprecedented surge or oceanic feeling in the aesthetic expression of the romantic century. As secular thought began to displace the certainties of a sacral universe, the oceans that give life to our planet offered a symbol of eternity, rooted in the experience of nature rather than Biblical tradition. Images of the sea permeated the minds of the early Romantics, became a significant ingredient of romantic expression, and continued to emerge in the language, literature, art, and music of the nineteenth century. These pages document the evidence for this oceanic consciousness in some of the most creative minds of that century.

Book Synopsis The Murders of Moisés Ville by : Javier Sinay
Download or read book The Murders of Moisés Ville written by Javier Sinay and published by . This book was released on 2022-02-08 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning journalist Javier Sinay investigates a series of murders from the nineteenth century, unearthing the complex history and legacy of Moisés Ville, the "Jerusalem of South America," and his personal connection to a little-known period of Jewish history in Argentina. In 2009, journalist Javier Sinay discovered an article from 1947, written by his great-grandfather Mijl Hacohen Sinay, detailing twenty-two murders that had occurred in Moisés Ville at the end of the nineteenth century. What starts out as an investigation into these murders turns into a deeper exploration of the history of Moisés Ville, one of the first Jewish agricultural communities in Argentina, and Sinay's own connection to this historically thriving Jewish epicenter. Seeking refuge from the pogroms of Czarist Russia, a group of Jewish immigrants founded Moisés Ville in the late 1880s. Like their town's prophetic namesake, these immigrants fled one form of persecution only to encounter a different set of hardships: exploitative land prices, starvation, illness, language barriers, and a series of murders perpetrated by roving gauchos who preyed upon their vulnerability. Sinay, though a descendant of these immigrants, is unfamiliar with this turbulent history, and his research into the spate of violence plunges him into his family's past and their link to Moisés Ville. He combs through libraries and archives in search of documents about the murders and hires a book detective to track down issues ofDer Viderkol, the first Yiddish newspaper in Argentina started by his great-grandfather. He even enrolls in Yiddish classes so he can read the newspaper and other contemporaneous records for himself. Through interviews with his family members, current residents of Moisés Ville, historians, and archivists, Sinay compiles moving portraits of the victims of these heinous murders and reveals the fascinating and complex history of the town once known as the "Jerusalem of South America."
