Book excerpt: Recent advances in the development of high strength materials, coupled with more advanced computational methods and design procedures, have led to a new generation of tall and slender buildings. These structures are very sensitive to the most common dynamic loads; wind and earthquakes. The primary requirement for a successful design is to provide safety while taking into account serviceability requirements. This book provides a well-balanced and broad coverage of the information needed for the design of structural systems for wind- and earthquake-resistant buildings. It covers topics such as the basic concepts in structural dynamics and structural systems, the assessment of wind and earthquake loads acting on the system, the evaluation of the system response to such dynamic loads and the design for extreme loading. The text is generously illustrated and supported by numerical examples and will be of great interest to practising engineers and researchers in structural, civil and design engineering and also to architects. The author has drawn on his experience as a teacher, researcher and consultant.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents a method of predicting the load-deformation response of a reinforced concrete member under repeated reversing cyclic load. Deformations due to flexure, shear and axial load are accounted for at all times using separate hysteresis loops for flexure and shear. A method of predicting the response of a reinforced concrete frame subjected to an earthquake loading is pre sented. The method accounts for deformations in addition to elastic flexural deformations by introducing an equiva lent rotational spring at each member end. By defining the properties of the spring properly, the response of the model can closely simulate that of the actual member. Standard slope deflection equations are modified to accommodate elastic members with rotational springs at their ends. When these equations are used to construct the frame stiffness matrix, computations in the inelastic range can be done in the same manner as those in the elastic range. The stiffness matrix is thus updated to be compat ible with the deteriorated structure at each instant of the motion. The equations of motion are solved using a linear acceleration method. A behavioral study is presented based on the analyses of seven twenty story shear wall structures. Variables with in the behavioral study were horizontal force factor K,shear stiffness and taper. The results of the behavioral study are discussed and compared and conclusions drawn.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive review of the material behavior of concrete under dynamic loads, especially impact and impuls, opens the volume. It is followed by a summary of the various analytical tools available to engineers interested in analyzing the nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete members for dynamic load. These range from relatively simple and practice-oriented push-over analysis to sophisticated layered finite element models. Important design-related topics are discussed, with special emphasis on performance of concrete frames subjected to seismic loads. The significance of modern software systems is recognized by including extensive examples. For readers not current in dynamic analysis methods, an appendix contains a review of the mathematical methods most commonly used for such analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the dynamic behavior of reinforced/prestressed concrete structures, such as: buildings and bridges. It discusses how to predict or check the real inelastic behavior of concrete structures subjected to dynamic loads, including equipment loads, earthquake motions, seismic interactions and missile impacts. A number of techniques have recently been developed to assist in evaluating such occurrences. This book is intended to apply structural dynamics to concrete structures and is appropriate as a textbook for an introductory course in dynamic behavior of concrete structures at the upper-undergraduate or graduate level as well as for practicing engineers.

Book excerpt: Inelastic Analysis of Solids and Structures presents in a unified manner the physical and theoretical background of inelastic material models and computational methods, and illustrates the behavior of the models in typical engineering conditions. The book describes experimental observations and principles of mechanics, and efficient computational algorithms for stress calculations as typically performed in finite element analysis. The theoretical background is given to an extent necessary to describe the commonly employed material models in metal isotropic and orthotropic plasticity, thermoplasticity and viscoplasticity, and the plasticity of geological materials. The computational algorithms are developed in a unified manner with some detailed derivations of the algorithmic relations. Many solved examples are presented, which are designed to give insight into the material behavior in various engineering conditions, and to demonstrate the application of the computational algorithms.
