Download or read book Kouchibouguac written by Ronald Rudin and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2016-04-06 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1969, the federal and New Brunswick governments created Kouchibouguac National Park on the province’s east coast. The park’s creation required the relocation of more than 1200 people who lived within its boundaries. Government officials claimed the mass eviction was necessary both to allow visitors to view “nature” without the intrusion of a human presence and to improve the lives of the former inhabitants. But unprecedented resistance by the mostly Acadian residents, many of whom described their expulsion from the park as a “second deportation,” led Parks Canada to end its practice of forcible removal. One resister, Jackie Vautour, remains a squatter on his land to this day. In Kouchibouguac, Ronald Rudin draws on extensive archival research, interviews with more than thirty of the displaced families, and a wide range of Acadian cultural creations to tell the story of the park’s establishment, the resistance of its residents, and the memory of that experience.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the spawning status of striped bass (Morone saxatilis) in the Kouchibouguac and Richibucto estuaries, eastern New Brunswick, in 1997 & 1998. In the spring and summer of both years, the pelagic spawning & littoral rearing habitat of the estuaries were sampled for ichthyoplankton and juvenile fish. The secondary objective was to use the sampling surveys to describe the fish communities of the estuaries during the ice-free seasons. The surveys were intended to detect any major differences in species assemblages between these two small neighbouring estuaries. The final section discusses species composition, striped bass spawning status, and the presence of young-of-the-year striped bass.

Book Synopsis Cumulative Effects Assessment Study, Kouchibouguac National Park by : Sarah A. Kalff
Download or read book Cumulative Effects Assessment Study, Kouchibouguac National Park written by Sarah A. Kalff and published by Halifax, N.S. : Parks Canada, Atlantic Region. This book was released on 1998 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cumulative effects assessment (CEA) seeks to overcome the weaknesses inherent in conventional project-focused environmental assessment by expanding the spatial and temporal boundaries of the assessment. In this study, the assessment boundaries include the six broad systems contained in Kouchibouguac National Park, New Brunswick, as well as the park as a whole and land outside but adjacent to park boundaries. The first section is a brief overview of cumulative effects, CEA, and the CEA approach used in the study. The second section introduces the park's natural and cultural resources along with the natural changes occurring within the park. The third section reviews legislation, policy, and plants guiding park management in order to identify the goals and targets critical for focusing the study and for evaluating the importance of effects. The fourth section describes past, present, and proposed projects and activities in the park and region and their environmental effects. The final section identifies important cumulative effects issues and discusses the importance of these effects.
Book Synopsis Ecological Impact Assessment by : Jo Treweek
Download or read book Ecological Impact Assessment written by Jo Treweek and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-06-24 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world's ecosystems are increasingly threatened by human development. Ecological impact assessment (EcIA) is used to predict and evaluate the impacts of development on ecosystems and their components, thereby providing the information needed to ensure that ecological issues are given full and proper consideration in development planning. Environmental impact assessment (EIA) has emerged as a key to sustainable development by integrating social, economic and environmental issues in many countries. EcIA has a major part to play as a component of EIA but also has other potential applications in environmental planning and management. Ecological Impact Assessment provides a comprehensive review of the EcIA process and summarizes the ecological theories and tools that can be used to understand, explain and evaluate the ecological consequences of development proposals. It is intended for the many individuals and companies involved in EIA and EcIA, as well as other areas of environmental management where impacts on ecosystems need to be evaluated. It will benefit planners, regulators, environmental consultants and scientists and will also provide an invaluable sourcebook and guide for the growing number of undergraduate students taking courses in applied ecology, EIA and related topics in environmental science. A practical management guide for the increasing numbers of practitioners of EcIA. A rapidly expanding subject driven by the proliferation of environmental legislation worldwide.
Book Synopsis Protecting Indigenous Knowledge and Heritage, New Edition by : Marie Battiste
Download or read book Protecting Indigenous Knowledge and Heritage, New Edition written by Marie Battiste and published by Purich Books. This book was released on 2024-10-31 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2007, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples became law, extending inherent human rights for the first time to the approximately half a billion Indigenous people around the planet. But nation-states have been slow to rethink their laws and policies. Protecting Indigenous Knowledge and Heritage situates Canadian progress in undertaking these reforms within a global context and explains what Indigenous knowledge is, who may use it, and how to provide it with legal protection. By tracing decade-long negotiations with British Columbia and Canada, this book demonstrates the fundamental role of Indigenous advocacy in developing legislation and action plans to implement inherent rights. This fully new edition tackles current issues in intellectual property rights and topics such as the revision of educational curricula to incorporate Indigenous content and methodologies. What emerges is a proposal for cooperative legal reform that will invigorate Indigenous knowledge systems and heritage.
Download or read book Taking the Air written by Paul Kopas and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Taking the Air, Paul Kopas takes a comprehensive approach to the policy aspects of the management of parks and protected areas. He scrutinizes the policy-making process for national parks since the mid-1950s and interrogates the rationale and policies that have governed their administration. He argues that national parks and park policy reflect not only environmental concerns but also the political and social attitudes of bureaucrats, citizens, interest groups, Aboriginal peoples, and legal authorities. He explores how the goals of each group have been shaped by the historical context of park policy, influencing the shape and weight of their contributions.

Book Synopsis A Proposed Framework to Assess Cumulative Environmental Effects in Canadian National Parks by : Sarah A. Kalff
Download or read book A Proposed Framework to Assess Cumulative Environmental Effects in Canadian National Parks written by Sarah A. Kalff and published by Halifax, N.S. : Parks Canada, Atlantic Regional Office. This book was released on 1995 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report proposes a framework that promotes cumulative impact assessment (CEA) as a decision-making process where information on the ecological integrity of national parks is integrated into park management planning. Research for the development of the framework includes a literature review, interviews with park managers and cumulative effects specialists, and field work in two Atlantic region parks. Two illustrations using a project from each park helped refine the framework and ensure its utility. The framework links three components: sources of cumulative environmental change, assessment of this change, and the options available to manage cumulative effects. The framework establishes a link between local effects induced by specific projects or activities and overall park ecological integrity by highlighting the relationship between project-specific environmental assessment and park planning. CEA is the bridge between these two management activities. The report focuses mainly on the assessment portion of the framework and provides a series of steps to assist in conducting CEAs. The steps are organized into three tiers of analysis that correlate with regional, park, and project site scales. The framework also directs the assessor to examine broad temporal scales.
