Book excerpt: As school systems across North America struggle to redefine themselves, educators everywhere are seeking a balance between academic achievement and the human and social needs of their students. The purpose of this correlational study was to quantitatively assess the construct of the school experience, as determined by academic achievement, as measured by GPA, and the level of involvement in school activities, from the perspective of four measures of student self-esteem. Data were collected from 263 students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 in a small district in southwestern Canada. The first part of this study explored the relationship between student self-esteem and four independent variables: GPA, level of involvement, grade level, and gender. The Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory was used to measure self-esteem on four scales. As a result of multiple regression analysis it was found that the R2 values were very low in all cases (ranging from 0.20 to 0.36), which indicates that the factors studied were poor indicators of self-esteem and that there was a great deal unexplained variation associated with the data. GPA, level of involvement, grade and GPA: grade were significant at .05 level of significance. Gender was not a significant factor in this study. It appears that self-esteem is linearly related to GPA, with the intercept depending on the grade, level of involvement, and gender and the slope depending on the grade. The relationship between GPA and self-esteem was strongest at Grade 6. Self-esteem was found to be strongest for students who were heavily involved in school-related or extra-curricular activities. Eleven survey questions regarding the school experience were analyzed using logistical regression analysis, which showed that the importance of getting good grades and participating in school activities varied according to grade and gender. Academic achievement was most important to Grade 6 students, good grades were more important to girls, than boys, and the association between getting good grades and self-esteem was strongest at Grade 6. This study suggests the current focus on intellectual development in most schools may not have the desired effect on social and human development, more specifically, the development of healthy self-esteem.

Nature implies certain innate or inherited factors such as intelligence, potentiality and personality while nurture contributing such things as may be found in homes, school, neighbourhood and the wider society. To ascertain the relative importance of nature and nurture is an arduos task. It endeavours to pinpoint such important factors as would give the reader a better understanding and insight into school success and failure.

Book excerpt: "While it may seem that the avenue to improve academic achievement would be to focus on furthering academics, the goal of this research was to examine how focusing on students' well-being is an important part of helping students achieve academically. This research examined the effect of academic self-worth and academic achievement in middle school students and tested academic helplessness as a mediator of this association. A supplemental analysis was conducted to examine an alternate direction of effect wherein academic helplessness was considered in the role of the independent variable and academic self-worth was considered to mediate the relationship between academic helplessness and academic achievement. Furthermore, the study also examined whether or not the presence of chronic academic stress moderated (1) the relationship between academic self-worth and academic achievement, and (2) the relationship between academic self-worth and academic helplessness. Results revealed that academic helplessness explained part, but not all, of the relationship between academic self-worth and academic achievement. Similarly, results revealed that academic self-worth explained part, but not all, of the relationship between academic helplessness and academic achievement. Finally, chronic academic stress did not moderate the effect of academic self-worth on academic achievement or the effect of academic self-worth on academic helplessness. These findings suggest that schools should consider the implications of academic self-worth and academic helplessness on academic achievement when developing programs to foster academic success"--leaf iii.

Book excerpt: Studies indicate that global self-esteem, an individual's overall sense of self-worth, and academic self-esteem, self-worth related to academics, are positively related to academic achievement. This relationship holds for white adolescents. However, while still positive, this relationship is weaker for African Americans, who have high global and academic self-esteem, but very low academic achievement. Patterns for Mexican Americans are less clear, but their global and academic self-esteem appear to fall between the range for white and African American adolescents, while their academic achievement is similar to that of African Americans. To address this, I construct Combinatoric Identity Theory (CIT), a symbolic interactionist theory that incorporates the importance of racial/ethnic and student identities into our current understandings of self-esteem and achievement. I then apply CIT to data collected on Mexican American and white tenth-graders. After a discussion of the relevant literature on education, self-esteem, and identity, I discuss my data collection strategy and techniques. This is followed by empirical analysis. Results indicate that identity processes do affect self-esteem, and that they operate in similar ways for Mexican American and white adolescents. Implications of these results and directions for future research are then presented.
