Book excerpt: This dissertation addressed the following research questions: Given that intimate partner violence is an expression of masculine power and control, how is this expression mitigated and/or aggravated by race and class differences? Are the cultural contexts used to justify the abuse different? Specifically, do the structural factors identified by the abusive men as contributing to intimate partner violence differ by race and class? Recent scholarship has challenged the primacy of gender as the pre-eminent explanatory factor in explaining intimate partner violence. This dissertation addresses this omission by examining how the construction of gender is impacted by race and class as demonstrated through men's accounts of intimate partner violence. The findings of this study are based on semi-structured interviews with fifty men currently receiving treatment for intimate partner violence. In order to qualify for the study, the men had to be enrolled in treatment for less than a month at the time of the interview. Of the fifty men who were interviewed for this research project, twenty-seven of the men were Black, twenty-two of the men were White and one man was Hispanic. I purposefully attempted to have comparable numbers of White and Black men in my sample due to the lack of Black men's participation in previous intimate partner violence research. Analysis of these interviews employed an Ecological Nested Model as the guiding theoretical framework. Currently there is a call for culturally sensitive treatment programs to increase the successful completion of treatment by men of color. Those suggestions rarely move beyond suggesting having a minority program director. The challenges to develop culturally sensitive treatments are real and much more complex than simply placing a different program director at the helm. Further, these differences in how and why men engage in intimate partner violence are not just reflective of race, but also of class and age. This research has suggested a number of policy recommendations that would allow program directors to tailor their treatment plans to account for such diversity, and to use the Ecological Nested Model as a way to better recognize those differences. While acknowledging race and class differences, these recommendations move beyond calling for a change in program director by race and allow for treatment that is culturally sensitive and thus hopefully more effective in understanding intimate partner violence and preventing future occurrences.

The current study examined fear of intimacy, ambivalent sexism, and relationship dominance as potential mediating factors of the relationship between masculinity ideology and acceptance of myths about partner violence in a community sample of 101 American men. Multiple regression analyses indicated that, while sexism and dominance did partially mediate the proposed relationship, fear of intimacy did not. Research and clinical implications are discussed. .

Book excerpt: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is becoming increasingly recognised as a severe mental and physical health concern. Recidivism rates are higher among individuals who engage in IPV than any other violent offenders, and existing treatment programs have minimal effect on the reduction of recidivism beyond the impact of being arrested. Additionally, IPV is not an issue that affects women exclusively. The most common violent relationship is one in which both partners engage in IPV (labelled mutuality), and, overall, an equivalent number of females as males have been found to engage in IPV (labelled symmetry). Several factors have been found to be associated with male perpetrated IPV, including insecure romantic attachment styles and personality pathology. Borderline and antisocial personality are the most commonly investigated personality variables. Few studies have investigated the role that psychopathy might play; particularly the sub-factors of psychopathy. Additionally, there has been a lack of research on the effects of traditional conservative masculine attitudes, although there is some evidence to suggest a relationship with IPV. Typologies have been created to categorise men who engage in IPV into groups based on combinations of variables. However, less is known about which variables can be used to reliably distinguish men who engage in IPV from those who do not. A sample of 49 men from the general community, and an additional 49 men from Men's Behaviour Change Programs (MBCPs) across Victoria were recruited for the study. The participants were then assigned to either a Physically Violent (PV) or Physically Non-Violent (PNV) group based on a positive endorsement of any physical assault toward their partner within the past 12 months-using the Conflict Tactics Scale 2. Based on this method, 45 men were assigned to the PV group, and 53 men were assigned to the PNV group. Participants then completed a battery of tests measuring romantic attachment style, pathological personality traits, and conservative masculine attitudes. They were also assessed on what motivated their violence. The results of the study were consistent with the findings of previous research that found, among violent couples, the most common relationship was one in which both the male and female partners were violent (mutuality). Gender symmetry was also found. Additionally, among men who engaged in IPV, those who were motivated by impulsive aggression tended to have higher scores on a measure of borderline personality, whereas those who were motivated by premeditated aggression tended to score higher on the behavioural factor of psychopathy. The results of a logistic regression revealed that borderline personality traits and conservative masculine attitudes best predicted physical IPV. When borderline personality was deconstructed into the nine criteria outlined in the DSM-IV, the identity disturbance criterion was found to be most significant. Total psychopathy score did not reliably discriminate between the two groups, nor did the individual sub-factors of psychopathy. The theoretical implications of these findings shed new light on what might be contributing to the violent behaviour in men who engage in IPV. Men who have a fragile sense of identity and, also, a set of beliefs consistent with traditional conservative ideals about masculinity, may look to that set of beliefs to help define their identity. Therefore, if their partner behaves in a manner that violates these expectations of gender roles (either by behaviour that contradicts these expectations, or by pressuring the male partner to behave contradictory to these expectations), it could be interpreted as a direct challenge or threat to their already fragile sense of identity. If, implicit in these conservative masculine attitudes, is the belief that engaging in physically aggressive behaviour to solve problems is acceptable male behaviour, it seems likely that their interpretation of their partner's behaviour would lead them to engage in IPV.

Book excerpt: Intimate partner violence (IPV) by men against women is a devastating social problem that is experienced by over a quarter of women in their lifetimes (Tjaden & Thoennes, 2000). IPV in Asian American communities is a prevalent problem that is likely influenced by both patriarchal gender role norms as well as culturally salience factors that are distinct to Asian Americans. Given the influence of norms and values on gendered power dynamics and racial power dynamics in the U.S., it is important to understand the intersections of gender and culture in Asian American men's masculine role norms and IPV perpetration. This dissertation therefore examines the influence of culture on Asian American men's conceptions of masculinity and the associations between gender and culture in their IPV perpetration. Three studies are presented from a program of research spanning five years on the intersections of culture, gender, and IPV perpetration for Asian American men. The first study (Chapter 2) examines Asian American men's perspectives on ideal masculine characteristics using qualitative methods. It finds that Asian American men report ideal masculinity traits that overlap with Asian cultural constructs such as collectivism as well as traditional masculinity themes associated that in the literature are associated with negative outcomes psychological and social outcomes including IPV perpetration. The second study (Chapter 3) reviews the literature on gendered and cultural predictors of American men's IPV perpetration. It finds that while patriarchal gender role norms consistently predict IPV perpetration, the role of Asian cultural factors on IPV is unclear. The third study (Chapter 4) examines the association between several culturally relevant risk and protective factors and Asian American men's IPV perpetration, including the unique and moderating effects of patriarchal gender role norm adherence. It finds that Asian American men's risk for IPV perpetration was not significantly predicted by levels of patriarchal gender role norms, culturally relevant predictors, or their interactions in a sample of Asian American community men from the NLAAS. Implications for operationalization of masculinity and culturally relevant constructs are discussed. Together, this program of research provides a comprehensive and multi-method understanding of the intersections of gender, cultural factors, and violence against women for Asian American men.

These motives play a role in almost all violence, regardless of gender. Book excerpt: The existing literature on risk profiles leading to the perpetration of violent acts has suggested personality and gender role socializations to be relevant predictors. Research has consistently found personality factors, particularly trait agreeableness, to predict several types of violence (e.g., sexual violence, violence against intimate partners, aggressive behaviors across relationships). Recent research suggests that although both adherence to masculine social norms and individual differences in experiences of stress while enacting these norms have been shown to be reliably associated with violence, masculine gender discrepancy stress (i.e., stress experienced by men when perceiving themselves to be inadequately masculine) may be uniquely predictive of gender-based violence. This thesis aims to differentiate between risk pathways from discrepancy stress and personality trait-agreeableness to three types of violence: physical aggression, physical intimate partner violence (IPV), and sexual violence. A sample of (N = 454) men completed a series of questionnaires including the Masculine Gender Role Discrepancy Stress Scale (MGRDS), NEO-Five Factor Model scale (NEO-FFI), and Sexual Experiences Survey (SES). Results suggest masculine gender role discrepancy stress (DS) to have significant unique value as a predictor for sexual violence. Other findings suggest personality-trait agreeableness, gender role stress, and discrepancy stress to be important predictors for risk of committing physical aggression either towards partners or non-partners.

Book excerpt: This dissertation identified and developed indicators of a new potential predictor of relationship satisfaction and intimate partner violence (IPV): discrepancies between the ideal and perceived gendered characteristics of romantic partners. Past research has overlooked the implicitly gendered nature of these "partner-ideals." Two pilot studies were conducted to develop measures of gendered partner-ideals and -perceptions based on existing measures of gender ideology. The main study examined survey data collected online from adults (n = 643) living in the U.S. who were in a heterosexual romantic relationship for at least six months. Three main hypotheses were tested regarding the associations among gender ideology, gendered partner-ideals, gendered partner-perceptions, gendered partner-ideal discrepancies, relationship satisfaction, and experiences with IPV. Hypothesis One was supported: women's masculinity ideology positively correlated with the corresponding masculine-ideal for each subscale of the respective measures as well as for the aggregate measures. Tests of Hypothesis Two showed that women's masculine-ideal discrepancies predicted their emotional abuse perpetration, but not their physical assault or injury perpetration, mediated by relationship satisfaction. However, this effect was small. Hypothesis Three had mixed support. Women's aggregate masculine-partner perceptions were positively associated with their reports of emotional abuse victimization. Additionally, women's reports of most types of IPV victimization positively correlated with perceptions of their male partners' conformity to the specific norms of negativity toward sexual minorities and restrictive emotionality.
