Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relationship of the Junior High School Curriculum to the Primary Functions of the Junior High School Among other things, Emile had experience in a trade, less for the sake of knowing the trade than for overcoming the prejudices which despise it. In his long discussions of the importance of the manual and industrial activities in education, Rousseau emphasizes many of the sotial advantages. At the end of this period Emile is industrinus, temperate, patient, firm, and full of courage. He hadalittle knowledge, but whatrhe has is really his own; he knows nothing by halves. Thus to Rousseau must be credit for presaging an approach to what constitutes a real education for a youghrof our present day junior high school age. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Junior High School Idea IT is said that any one really wishing to get the point of view Of any serious study, whether it be in text-book form or not, should study the preface and the table of contents carefully, before beginning the first chapter. Most of us, however, are too impatient to begin the book we have selected to read, and to get directly to the story or explanation that concerns us, to be as careful in these matters as the experts tell us we Should. Because most of us may prefer the direct attack in this discussion of the purposes and practices of modern junior high school, we shall include in this, our first chapter, such preface or introduction as may be necessary. At Speyer Experimental Junior High School in New York City, where the aims and practices that we Shall discuss have been or are being worked out, we have a peculiarly managed school. The principal and teachers are paid by the City of New York as in all other public schools. The educational direction of the school, the selection of the program Of studies and the various courses, however, have been under the immediate supervision of Teachers College, Columbia University, with Professor Thomas H. Briggs as its representative in the field. Teachers College owns the Speyer build ing, the gift of Mr. James Speyer of New York City. To be sure this is their originating purpose and will remain their dominant one. But the scientific study of the careers of pupils indicates that the school system inevitably performs certain other functions which have large con sequences for the students inasmuch as they retard, close, lengthen or determine the particular quality of the school education received. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Curriculum Guide, Law Program, Junior High Middle School An innovative program in legal education was inaugurated at Dorchester High School in March, 1968. The program was financed by a grant from the Office of Economic Opportunity, and was initiated by the Boston University Law School under the supervision of Attorney William M. Gibson, the Director of the Boston University Law and Poverty Project. Through the use of such devices as mock-trials, role-playing, and simu lation, the students participating in the law program became involved in the process of the law. Also, the hypothetical case studies, which have been an integral part of the program, assist in making the study of law relevant to the life of the students. The program has been designed to attempt to develop positive concepts and attitudes toward the law, society, and the com munity, on the part of the participating students. Book excerpt: In 1909-10, the junior high school appeared in America as a deliberately planned unit of our public-school system. The idea developed slowly, and then WWI checked its progress almost completely. Now it is estimated there are more than 2,500 such schools in the United States. In this book Dr. Koos addresses the conditions that produced the junior high school, and lists its peculiar functions--the most important of which are a democratic school system, the recognition of the nature of adolescence, provision for better teaching, the securing of better scholarship, and improvement of the disciplinary situation and the socializing opportunities. The book is a real contribution to the literature of the junior high school. It should be studied by all who are concerned with the development or the ad- ministration of this new type of school organization.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specimen Junior High School Programs of Study Kindly send me copies of junior high-school programs of study or tell me where I may Obtain copies Of such programs is the content Of numerous letters received by the Bureau Of Education. In order that these requests may be granted, this leaflet, which contains 25 programs Of study selected from those on file in this Office, has been prepared. Four Of the programs included are the work of State departments of public instruction and 21 of city school depart ments. The programs may be considered typical Of those in use in both the smaller and larger cities in various sections of the country. A comparison of the 25 programs reveals the fact that while no two are exactly alike, certain principles are fairly well adhered to. One is that the first junior high-school year, or at least the first half of that year, should be a transition or an adjustment period and that for this reason the courses should be a continuation Of the elementary courses but presented from a new viewpoint. Some schools, however, Offer electives in the first junior high-school year. Of the 25 school systems represented, 15 offer electives in the first year, 22 in the second, and 25 in the third. In accordance with this request the Commissioner appointed the following committee: - Arthur C. Boyden, Principal, State Normal School, Bridgewater. This committee decided to draft a manual dealing with the most important problems in the organization and administration of junior high schools. The draft was prepared with great care and was presented for discussion, section by section, at the Second Annual State Conference of Junior High School Administrators, held at Bridgewater April 20, 21, and 22, 1921. After the conference the committee met again and revised its draft in the light of the discussion at Bridgewater. Book excerpt: "There's more to helping participants develop motor skills than just coming up with relevant drills. If you want participants to succeed, you need to structure learning tasks to keep them interested and engaged. Although there are many resources available to help teachers and coaches improve their curriculum, teaching skills, and management, little has been written about the critical issue of effective task design ... until now." "This text takes the most current research on learning and teaching movement activity and translates it into practical, down-to-earth suggestions for coaches and teachers. Using examples both in the gym and on the playing field, the book shows teachers and coaches alike how to develop instructional tasks that maximize students' learning and retention."--BOOK JACKET.
